On October 15, 2007, activists around New Zealand woke to guns in their faces. Black-clad police smashed down doors, dragging families out onto roads. In the rural village of Rūātoki, helicopters hovered while locals were stopped at roadblocks. Operation 8 involved 18 months of invasive surveillance of Māori sovereignty and peace activists accused of attending armed training camps in the Urewera ranges - homeland of the Tūhoe people. Operation 8 asks how and why the raids took place. How did the War on Terror become a global witch-hunt of political dissenters reaching even to the South Pacific?

It seems a bit odd 2 me, i was born in NZ mostly grew up in OZ i don't recall hearing about this here. With all the surveillance and resources they put into Operation 8 how did the NZ powers at be drop the ball in Christchurch 2019. We were told the NZ intelligence, security and the fuzz that over looks at potential terrorism had no resources for years to adequately monitor threats.But like the powers here and proably in NZ they proably thought 'Nah mate he's just one those white nationalist all good he's not a bloody muso". And i belive the inquiry has only just started this year after 4 years, had to look that up as the media proably doesn't want to offend and portray the white colonial majority. Months before any of this was made public,there was rumour of a Tuhoe underground army.A personal contact of mine spoke of training with them.Another was invited to join but declined. Obviously word got out and the threat was deemed creditable enough for the SAS to be sent in to gather information.They found a small ,armed group ,learning guerilla warfare tactics .This group included a well known Tuhoe identity. At this stage it could be argued that the local copper could have been informed and directed to visit this identity,for a cuppa and a chat.Perhaps,hey bro,they are on to you.Keep at it and the big boys will be sent in. The authorities,keen to test their powers under the new anti terror laws(or whatever they were called)and eager to play with their new toys,chose the sledge hammer to crush a peanut approach.Sadly the rest is history. Differently one sided you blame the Police when you should be blaming the labour party as they were the government in 2007. Give both side of the story and you all want to vote for labour when LABOUR was the government in 2007 and would have been in full agreement with the Police. Labour are very under handed as they are now just look at what Jacinta Ardern did to New Zealand.. Vote for any other party than Labour.
