The Haystack railroad bridge over the Petaluma river was installed in 1903 and is still going strong, But the new SMART train needs a new bridge so soon this bridge will be removed. See how it works before it is gone. Details of the operating parts

I remember seeing that bridge as a kid every time we went through Petaluma on highway 101. It was always in the open position. I never thought that rail line was ever going to be used again. Its a pity that that old bridge was removed in favor of a new one. When I was living in Santa Rosa, seeing a freight train on that line was a treat. I moved to Kansas 22 years ago and here , they are coming and going every 5 minutes. lol

fascinating video! I always wondered how they got the ends to lock up and maintain the weight of the train as it passes over. Well done!

The Santa Fe car had lost its storage as was going to storage on the NWP. The car has since been removed from the NWP and is now out in service. I do not know where.

It seems a little odd that the bridge control panel is labeled Petaluma Drawbridge when this is a center pivot swing bridge with a paired through truss center span.

Allen A agreed when I was watching the innermost gearing, I wondered what was going on. And as the video progressed I realized that it was nothing even close to a drawbridge. And there wasn't even an artist there with an easel painting the bridge. LOL

What was that Santa Fe car doing there? Being taken to Willits in the near future?

Well, as long as SMART was completely rebuilding the southern NWP, replacing a 115 year old bridge was probably a good idea. But SMART isn’t always very smart… they terminated the NWP tank car storage agreement at Schellville due some whinney types who were afraid that they would explode. The truth is that those cars were empty. In fact STB rules prohibit storing loaded tank cars. And, by doing so SMART threw away an annual half million in income. After all, NOBODY makes money from passengers. Not so smart, SMART… 10:10

Can somebody please explain to me why, after 110 years we now have to look at graffiti on an old train bridge and everything else? What the hell is going on?

Agree it is sad and here is a humorous story for you. I watched a guy shoot a full can of spray paint with a pellet gun and it semi exploded. It was shot from 50 yards away from "The Grassy Knoll" as it was named later on this day. The RR Bridge tagger had set this can down and was starting to use his first, when to his shock and amazement the can 10 feet away from him suddenly flipped over and spun around. He had no idea where the shot came from and froze for about a minute. His head was buried down inside his shoulders as he apparently was awaiting a possible second shot. From 50 Yards away we could only assume he was shitting his pants as well. We stayed still and quiet as he made a slow retreat and then a mad dash to safety as he left the area. IT GETS BETTER. He left the area and made a anonymous phone call to the Police explaining that he was minding his own business starting to spray paint graffiti when he was ambushed. The Police showed up in the area to Investigate and approached us with caution (2 of the 4 had their guns out) They determined pretty quick that we were no threat. Our Id checks came back spotless and having the pellet gun to shoot rattle snakes while Metal Detecting/souvenir hunting was no issue with the Police. They explained why they were there and we told a very truthful confession of the event step by step. They walked over to the bridge area and gathered the evidence, after the 4 cops looked at the can one spoke up and said 'It looks like this was punctured with a screwdriver or ice pick" and if the anonymous caller wants to show up and file a complaint of retrieve his property he can debate my findings then. The 3 other Cops all agreed that was a perfect way to handle it. Upon the Police leaving the Lead officer shared his notes for us to confirm for the report and here is exactly what it said. 1. Arrived at Dealey Plaza 3:20 P.M. 2. Interviewed Lee Harvey Oswald 3. Investigated Grassy Knoll and surrounding area. 4. determined there was no magic bullet. He asked us if that sounded good and all we could offer was a hysterically Laughing "YES". It turns out that this Officer was Former RR Police before he became Local City Police. He didn't "condone our tactic on the record but off the record all he could do was laugh.

Russ Bay man oh man Russ, I wish I was a little critter watching and listening. That sounded like it was absolutely hilarious. and I grok what you guys are saying about graffiti. It really defaces property. There is one occasion where I have come to accept graffiti, and that's when it's tasteful art and done well.
