Operation Sunrise Sweep: Santa Monica Police Enforcement at Beach Leads to Narcotics Arrest

In a concerted effort to enhance safety and cleanliness along Santa Monica Beach, the Santa Monica Police Department initiated "Operation Sunrise" on Thursday, February 22, 2024. The operation, which took place on the Ocean Front Walk, was spearheaded by the department's Downtown unit and involved a dedicated team of 8 officers and 2 supervisors. Running from 7 am to 12 pm, the initiative was a targeted approach aimed at engaging proactively with individuals found camping, creating disturbances, or in need of social services.
The operation led to the arrest of one individual on suspicion of narcotics possession and the issuance of a citation for smoking on the beach. Additionally, several advisals were issued to individuals found camping on the premises. "Operation Sunrise" was not only about enforcement but also focused on educating the public about local camping laws and connecting those in need with appropriate services.
Sergeant Sendejas, in charge of the Pier Task Force and Directed Action Response Team (DART), emphasized the importance of high visibility enforcement and addressing quality of life issues that have been a concern for the community and local businesses, especially those in the hotel industry. The presence of officers on patrol was aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the community, addressing municipal and county violations.
Vice Mayor Lana Negrete praised the operation's impact, noting the proactive engagement with the community and the positive response from residents, tourists, and the business community. The visible presence of law enforcement was reported to curtail unwanted activities and was met with widespread approval from passersby and businesses alike, who have long sought a safer, more accessible, and attractive beach path.
"Operation Sunrise" represents a direct response to the concerns raised by community members and businesses along Ocean Front Walk. The initiative's success in creating a cleaner, safer environment underscores the Santa Monica Police Department's commitment to addressing community needs and enhancing the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

To who it may concern: You can live in peace in the canyon around Laguna Beach. The homeless shelter is at 20652 Laguna Canyon Road. If you need a hot shower or food you use the shelter. You can do laundry there too.

i remember laguna canyon being over ran, trashed and totally wasted by peace & freedom seeking hippies back in the mid 60's to early 70's. Being a south OC middle- lower class local, we experienced so many areas once enjoyed by the public for generations suddenly being closed due to those unsanitary care bears crapping everywhere in group communal style behavior. This is just more of the same in many ways except now they are called homeless. My old $95 a month 1 room studio apartment above the beach @ Heisler park./divers cove in north laguna now rents for over $2k a month. Needless to say seeing the writing on the wall i left my hometown over 50 years ago & never looked back.

I love my little city. Culver City but It is discouraging and frustrating to see where we are now. Hell, there is a whore house at the end of my block, AKA Massage parlor at Bentley and Washington Blvd The Children have to walk by on the way to school. To La Ballona elementary school. The Ladies stand out front on their phones Talking to customers [ AKA Johns] smoking while the Children walk by. A Citizen of Culver City for 65 years. Also, the Sidewalk illegal vendor cart clean-up was outstanding. Thank you again.

In one area already homeless were pan handling FRT - Fa cial Rec ognition Tech nology photoed electronically fined and automatically had a warrant when they didn't pay up. Non paid fine turned into an arrest when the homeless didnt pay the E Ticket - Electronic Ticket. Just like TCE - Tra ffic Cam era En forcement alredy in California I saw it in 2007.
