Orchid has some awesome experimental/fusion stuff buried in the middle (of some of the best metal ever made). In particular note are the acoustic sections of The Apostle in Triumph. Really great classical/medieval/folk leanings. I hated their modern prog/psychadelic stuff... until I got older and started to really appreciate it. I can listen to their hard stuff now and again still. I can listen to this any time. @@WFly101

I'm speechless. It's progressive, yet accessible... mystic and full of the sweetness of fantastic bass and drums. I've been listening to it non-stop for a while and I still find things to like and things that make the sound even richer. People might cry about this song not being "Opeth" enough, but Opeth never settled for a single sound. They have been all over the death-metal-prog-rock landscape and they have still so much to explore and blow our minds with. Hail Opeth!

When I first listened to this song I wasn't too into it, but now that I've returned to it after the past couple of days to check it out again I'm sort of digging it now. It's not like classic opeth, which was more about movements and emotional highs and lows, this is kind of driving and atmospheric. Its sort of like Chelsea Wolfes philosphy of using a riff as a meditative experience while chanting over it. I'm eager to hear what the rest of the album sounds like now, because I feel like this song probably makes a good bridge between moods.

It has always become common for bands who have put their time in, and made their mark in infamy a legendary one, to tend steer off as they get grow older and wiser to make their music more towards their personal tastes, and not to give in to surrounding public opinions and pressure to continue making music to appease them and not themselves. If you watch the Opeth documentaries and interviews of Mike, you will find out how he has an insanely sized record collection of early rock albums. A lot of it abstract unknown bands from the early 70's and 80's. He spends hours in that room with his headphones on, in his chair, listening to the music in it's original format and becoming inspired about it. How many of us (musicians) have done the same in a way to the bands we like? Just some food for thought here on the subject. Let creation be, creation. Thank you.

I used to listen to Opeth's songs over and over again. Back in the days, the harmony of lyrics and instrumental parts was perfect. Whenever I listen, I felt something different. Even on the same songs, I felt many things. The composition was so creative that I still can listen to them without being bored. After Heritage came out, I thought "okay, its something new and I should be open-minded and be adapted." but right now, I'm kinda sad that I won't get what I used to get from Opeth's songs when I was a kid. I didn't like Opeth because of growls, solos or whatever. I like Opeth because they can practically tell a story as like as you are within the story, living it. I like Opeth because the can extract emotions out of your head and transfer it to your heart. This is okay if compared to today's music market, but I can't feel the uniqueness of Opeth's songs in this. I can't find many feelings like I used to find on the older songs. Just my humble opinions...

From the two songs I've heard from Pale Communion, I can say that Heritage was just a demo album for what was the come. There's some great moments on Heritage but it was really unfocused at times and bland. This new record sounds like it will be much more focused and convincing. Just this song on its own would probably be the best track if it was on Heritage. Eternal Rains Will Come is just as good and pretty damn moving. I haven't been MOVED by Opeth's music since Ghost Reveries, at least. I can't fucking wait for this album.

I didn't say it was all bland. Haxprocess is the best song on that album, IMO. But there were way more moments on that record that were dull than most of Opeth's work. Wouldn't say they blow this out of the water.

Biophonism And for people like you, bragging about your supposed artistic understanding is just a kind of masturbation for the ego. Art is subjective - one person's masterpiece is another's snorefest. If you think Heritage is amazing, more power to you. Bad way to voice your opinion though.

Just wanna amend this inane comment I made years ago lol. I might of been drunk when I posted that. Don't drink and surf, kids. Its true those songs I listed are amazing. But yeah, every album that Opeth has released has amazing moments. Can't imagine how difficult it is to deliver time and time again like this band does. Put it this way - Opeth is one of the very, very few bands at this point that I still pay attention to when it comes to new releases. My appreciation for them continues to grow over time.

When I first heard this song I kind of liked it but not that much. Yet in the last couple of weeks it's been growing on me. It gets stuck in my head a lot and I hear it randomly and have to come back and listen. I think it's one of those songs that takes some time to sink in, I've known more than a few of those.

There is a really big obsession with death metal and growling, we need to open our minds. Death metal is just another genre, whith really good, interesting an powerfull music and with a really good masterpieces such as Crimson (Edge Of Sanity), Still Life (Opeth). Symbolic (Death) or Altars Of Madness (Morbid Angel), there is no discussion about this, but, music is in constantly change, music needs to experiment and innovate, if not, what?

Looking forward to this album; it seems like it will be more refined and focused than Heritage (which was great but felt a bit all over the place for me). I think a lot of people don't understand that if Opeth right now made another melodic death metal album it would probably be soulless and kind of subpar because Mikael isn't really "feeling it." Instead of people complaining about this just go listen to something else? There's a ton of amazing shit out there that I can't be mad at Opeth or anything else for changing styles. Unless they started rapping or adding pop... only guy who might pull that off is Devin Townsend. lol

***** You shouldn't predict or expect anything man. Nobody could predict Heritage, it just came out and blew everybody out, that's how things roll. The only thing that I know for a fact is that all predictions, for this new album and the future of the band, will always be inaccurate.

Now that it's out... legit album all around. I feel it's missing epic segments like Folklore's ending on Heritage but as an overall album I enjoyed this a lot better. "Faith in Others" is possibly the best track imo.

Alex Cambron I strongly agree with you. After one focused listening only (and a few others while working) I consider the strongest pieces to be Eternal Rains will come and Faith in others. I found most of the pieces very reminiscent of Hex Omega, in the sense that they seem to be build around creating a strange/ominous atmosphere more than being lyrical like I always considered "old opeth" to have been (from morningrise to Watershed included). Faith's has it all right with it's emphasis on touching melody, focus on Mikael's voice and the synth, and the really parsimonious use of the guitars. I hope they try more of this for the albums to come. Also agree with you that this album is way better than heritage, that was nice but had "transition album" written all over it, with its many lenghts. Still, gotta admit, as much as I define myself as someone who's favorite music is progressive rock from the seventies, I feel sad that so many groups have abandonned their metal vibe for an all-out "return" to the seventies prog rock : Opeth first and foremost, but also Dark Suns, Cynic (well, not so much a return to the seventies, but their last album is about as close to metal as Pale Comunion), etc. Still, all great bands, and eager to hear what they'll come up with next !

Anything Opeth does is the shit. So don't come around saying that they can't change their style , they're the same. U just want growls??go back then, to one of their old shit. They evolve. In my personal opinion I love the growls, gives a kick to the song. But their lyrics are as dark and cool and nostalgic and searching for answers and observing the world, as always. It's just different. Try screaming/singing their songs. Now do it for years. They still express the same idea, that's why they're Opeth. All their albums about change. Letting go. This is their other side.

"Anything Opeth does is the shit" Absolute nonsense. So, what? If the next Opeth album consists entirely of Mikael sneezing into a microphone while reggae plays quietly in the background it'll be just as good as Still Life and Ghost Reveries simply because it's Opeth?

Mikeoneus I agree, blind fanboyism is fucking lame. I spend my money and my time on these guys, and I most definitely can form an opinions...and it's that Steve Wilson needs to get out of Mikael's head. Mike lost his balls over the last few years. Shame.

CannibalCorpse909 More so "Low-IQ, Metal elitists", just saying. I've been listening to Opeth a very long time, along with Steve Wilson's work, what is there not to like? I'm sure there will be a song in this album with growls. Not like you understand the lyrics, anyway. You just want to hear growls. Pretty sad, imo. Go listen to Storm Corrosion, try to tell everyone that Steve Wilson is a bad influence, you would not be able to.

That's actually the most stupid shit i have ever read. The point of selling out is making music that has nothing to do with your previous works in order to get a bigger market and public so you can achieve more popularity. You can like their new music, i like it personally, but that doesn't change the fact that they started to play this music to get a bigger audience

And some years ago… back on the days when I was discovering metal, Opeth was the band that definitely made me a metal fan. It seems that nowadays the've decided to close the page of metal to start with new music and I couldn't be more glad about it. As far as I can see, Opeth will always be my favorite band.
