Aggressive Tendencies

Mikael Åkerfeldt reveals he was worried, after hitting a writer's block, that the end of Opeth might be here. Fortunately, he pulled up his boots and wrote what ended up being 'Heritage,' turning over a new leaf for the band. October 05, 2016.

I hope Mikael never stops making music and doing what he wants. I'm here for it all. Love Opeth and every single album they have released. He's right... to have continued with the Death Metal Prog would have gotten stale at some point I'm sure though I'd have definitely kept eating it up lol. Sorceress is my fav of thier Prog rock era so far and I can't wait to hear what they have next because In Cauda was amazing. Be cool to see them come out of nowhere and hit us with a Heavy ass record again just to show they can haha.

Pale communion is the most like their old music. In terms of how the structures of the songs are. Pale communion is a great album.

As much as I love Heritage and Sorceress, Opeth need another mean-ass heavy hitter like Blackwater Park.

Mike can't growl like he did on BWP anymore. And I don't think he has the will and the passion to write this type of music again. You can't fake this type of energy and songwriting, I think it would sound artificial. And there's nothing more boring than heavy stuff that doesn't pump you up. Even if I prefer Orchid to Watershed, the three last albums are pretty good in their own style, and find myself surprised enjoying them a lot.

As a fan sure it will be amazing, but as for what they want, I don't think Mikael would like the idea of looking back instead of moving forward, to be honest. Just listen to how they play those songs today: I mean they might as well give up playing their death metal catalogue at once and instead focus on play songs that best represent them for what they are today, and not for what they were. By the way I have so much respect for what Mike and the band achieved, they really deserve all the success in the world.

TheAskald I don’t think whether he can growl or not matters as far as whether they’ll make heavier music or not. They have plenty of progressive death metal songs (Beneath The Mire,Ghost Of Perdition,Bleak, etc) that have a lot of clean singing in it. I really do think they could make heavier stuff than the last 3 albums in their future releases, but I don’t think it’ll ever be death metal heavy again since they don’t seem as inspired to write death metal songs as they once were.

Vinnst Pale Communion was the only good album Opeth's progressive rock era has brought. Heritage was decent. Sorceress was just bad, very uninspired.

Dregon Skreper Sorceress was brilliant. A masterpiece in my opinion. I don't believe you can really fault it unless you're stuck on Opeth older work.

Their old stuff was simply better though. Old Opeth: One of the most unique Metal bands of all time, instantly recognizable, nobody has managed to recreate/copy their sound New Opeth: "I have heard this before, but not in a good way". I do like Prog Rock, but that's also why I don't like the new Opeth. To me, everything on their past three albums, have already been done before by the original 70s Prog bands, and the originals did it better.

Melodeath00 exactly my opinion, why would i buy an opeth album if i can buy a camel album that was done 40 years ago that sounds really original...My problem with opeth is not that they changed, my problem is that they are not writing good music
