I hated growls before discovering Opeth. Couldn't stop listening to their music though! Went through tolerating the growls, then eventually quite liking some of the growly bits and eventually loving the growls. Reading the lyrics along with the song certainly sped up that process and i got to the point where i could make out virtually all his harsh vocals on a first listen. It just like learning a language... you keep hearing it and it just sinks in a feels completely normal after a while. Now my three favourite vocalists are all growlers (Mikael Akerfeldt, Tatiana from Jinjer and Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation) I never saw that coming 15 years ago!

I think the growling is something you learn to appreciate the more you listen to it. It is like alcohol or coffee, you never like it at first but with time you grew to like it.

Exactly. I used to cherrypick the clean vocal parts in their songs when I first discovered them and skip the growls, but, when listening while walking, sometimes I couldn't skip, so I started getting more and more used to it, until I finally got it and started to see it as an indispensable part of the songs's emotional rollercoaster. Truly enjoying the song as a whole is a great experience. It takes some time, though. You have to be openminded and know that the brain subconsciously works these things even if we do not realize it.

Opeth's prog-death stuff is not the best entry-point for people who aren't into metal. To your credit, you took it well -- you appreciated Mikael's way with words, you got the point and emotion behind the heavy parts. Still, you'd be better off checking out their non-metal albums. I recommend Moon Above, Sun Below - as prog nerds, this should be right up your alley. And when you do want heavy again, Watershed is significantly more proggy while still getting brutal as hell at points. Hessian Peel is a great example.

The Lotus Eater off of Watershed is so fucking good. Such a great example of the music outweighing the fact that there is a lot of growling on the track

Opeth is all about the light and the dark.I LOVE THE GROWLS and the clean vocals. Embrace the growl. Many people who said they didn't like the harsh vocals have come to the dark side. Ghost Reveries is almost a perfect album Blackwater Park IS a perfect album. Listen to enough Opeth, and you'll wonder why it took so long to like the growls. Fun reaction.

This is one of my favorite opeths songs on one of my favorite opeth albums. I knew the clean parts were coming, I was just waiting for it while she had that look on her face during the growling parts 😂

The growls are definitely more of an acquired taste, but Mikael Akerfeldt enunciates better than most and it makes it easier for someone trying death metal music to understand the lyrics. Also, reading lyrics along with the song helps tremendously.

Opeth is always welcome, the growls are overcome by the superior musicianship and songwriting( and their later works don't have the growls).

Love Opeth. My favourite band changes every day, but it's always either Tool, Karnivool, or Opeth. lol, always those 3. Best 3 prog bands for my personal taste.

I think opeth are fantastic,the growls don't bother me,but his clean voice is better. This song has a bit of everything for me,what's not to like. I you want to listen to opeth albums without the harsh vocals,2003 damnation or any album of theirs from 2011 heritage album,there are only clean vocals.

Completely agree with Jana on the growling vocals, it makes it difficult to understand what they are saying. It certainly isn't my favorite type of singing but a little is okay, but as she said, just don't do 10 minutes straight of that stuff. Opeth does have fantastic music, so in small doses I can take the growls.

Normally I would agree, but in Opeth's case you can almost always realize what they're saying, especially when you grow accustomed to them. Also, why should understanding all the lyrics at once matter? Listen to the music, and then when you feel like it take the little booklet or laptop and read the lyrics as the song progresses. Much deeper and more mysterious and fun than just understanding it right away.

Hi Shufflers. Dave from Across The Pond. I agree with your views on this track. I enjoyed it, apart from the growls. There are plenty of clean singers that can add that menace and power - like Ronnie James Dio or Russell Allen. Growls are great in small doses for effect, like on Chasing The Dragon by Epica.

Sorry, but no, not for me. Not a fan of prog metal in general, and thus haven’t checked out Opeth previously, but that was even worse than expected. I did make it through the whole track though, but did not enjoy it at all.

Damn, I wish you could hear it the way I do but to each their own. I got into extreme metal very slowly through thrash, it takes time but I think it’s worth it if you take the journey
