You realize watching this that Mikael found a musical counterpart to himself with Wilson here. “He understands instantly what you’re saying” really means that Wilson gets where Mikael wants to take the music. He has a similar musical mind to akerfeldts. I think throughout Wilson’s musical career he’s been in control of his music. With Mikael they complete each other musically and artistically so well that they almost become like one musical mind. It’s strange. That musical connection is hard to find. It’s damn near impossible to have two amazing songwriting artists who have that connection. I wish they’d do more stuff together. I loved storm corrosion for how artistically bold they were to experiment and try and create a new sound. They completely gave the middle finger to the expectations and just did what satisfied them as artists. I wish they’d do tons more records together.

It's a shame Martin Lopez had to leave, his drumming really shines on the parts with more 'feel'. Would have fit well with the modern, mellower Opeth. 8:55 for instance

Interesting to see that Peter obviously contributed quite a lot to these albums but if you look at the Ghost Reveries documentary he seems to have barely contributed at all, I'd say he knew he was leaving when they made that album.

same...i began listening to opeth 15 years ago at the age of 14. through ups and downs, they've been a constant in my life. seen them in concert 3 times, and every time was incredible. i still listen to them almost daily. i love and appreciate many forms of music but for me personally, nothing compares to opeth.

Hiro lol. You must be alluding to their new music is shit. I guarantee if peter and Lopez were still around they woulda still made the stylistic change. They didn’t leave because mikael wanted to expand his music. The new music is still fucking fantastic music too. I know metal heads like to slobber cry about the stylistic change but the music is still fantastic. It’s still expertly composed and dynamic. It’s just not heavy anymore. Which is all Metal heads seem to care about. Children wanting their happy meals. Music is an art form. Not a circus.

im actually depressed by how easy Mikaels acoustic parts look in his hands. I mean, I'm a guitar player and probably could learn them in a day or less, but it still looks so smooth.

I am a pretty decent guitarist so I set about learning the Damnation album and let me tell you, it's not all that easy. I had to really piece it together. Closure took longer than I expected so I left it and went on to Deliverance and came back later and I could suddenly play it. That's the way learning their stuff is for me. Admiration, Frustration, acceptance of my short comings as a player and then finally playing it correctly. Took me a long time man.

@eezerian
@eezerian 6 жыл бұрын
He says "it would be easy if we stole "Famous Blue Raincoat" - (a Leonard Cohen song) - then he plays the song, which sounds like the chord progression he is working on for 'A Fair Judgement'. Tbh wish I'd watched this documentary before I made my cover of this song, would've helped a lot.
