Bill Burr does a great segment that actually explains why the beautiful stewardesses and general upscale attitude of flying disappeared, as answered by an airline pilot. Basically, the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 states that federal government cannot regulate fare pricing, routes, or market entry. New airlines opened up, fares became cheaper out of necessity to compete, and it drew a lower class of people who could now afford to fly. Being a stewardess didn't pay as well after that, plus there were less rich men flying, so the allure of being a hot stewardess was gone.
