Yes, Barbie was "feminism 101", but that's not a bad thing, because there are a lot of women (young and older) who need to hear some of those basic things. Not everyone is like you and I when we are constantly online and consuming a lot of feminist content. My mother is 56 and doesn't engage with that kind of stuff, and Barbie made her realize stuff about existing as a woman in this society that she probably never gave much thought before. And with how men reacted to the film, it's clear that they also have a very surface-level understanding on how women are treated which makes it more important to teach them even those basics.

I feel like nobody is talking enough about that aspects of the story (the first one you mention it's also a crucial part in the book, the second is not present). I felt sick and disgusted, I truly didn't like it and I cannot understand how people can get over these very disturbing parts...

I think that it is very healthy to be disgusted and disturbed by men taking advantage of a woman which I think is one of the points the movie is trying to make. Sometimes feeling something with your guts is deeper that having it laid out for you. Through out the movie Bella never seeks out or wonders about a man but rather about the world which is really remarkable I think! At the end Bella is the mature adult. She is so above the men that took advantage of her (as you said) that she kind of feels sorry for them. Also about the scene with the two boys; I think there are two things to take from that: 1) it shows how men raise other men especially in relation to women and how patriarchy and inequality are passed on to the next generation and 2) this is a real practice that men actually do in real life kind of a twisted ’lead by example’ situation, but the way it happens in this movie makes it completely ridiculous for the man! I feel like if you watch the movie in the context of the reality that Bella lives in it makes perfect sense! For me personally it is a feminist masterpiece!!

Have you seen All of Us Strangers or Society of the Snow? Those were two of my favorites of 2023 (along with several of the best picture nominees).

I love, love, love Poor Things. I never have an issue with feminist stories told from one angle. Because I feel like a movie could never capture every single facet anyway. I’m a gay man, so I know I have to be careful with my opinions 😆 Idk. I feel like it’s silly to say a man can’t or shouldn’t write feminist material. Especially with something like Poor Things, I think it contributes to its humor and irony.

This film being the one to finally get Nolan his Oscar would kind of be like Leo winning his in 2016. Sure it was good and all, but it's the fact that his previous arguably greater films didn't win it for him when most think they should've.

From the best picture category I only watched American Fiction, Maestro and Oppenheimer. I still want to watch Anatomy of a fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Poor Things and The zone of Interest. From all the movies I've watched last year Oppenheimer really blew my mind. I loved everything about it and I'm totally rooting for it in every category! I can also recommend Society of the snow. The film got me really emotional...

this is the first year i’ve ever seen more than 1 or 2 of the films nominated for best picture (i’ve seen about half) and it’s interesting to have better context when hearing people discuss their thoughts/predictions! i definitely agree with your thoughts on poor things, there were several aspects of the movie that were done really well, but the way they dealt with the idea of sexual liberation seemed a bit half baked to me. the fact that she essentially had a brain of a child for such a major chunk of those experiences made me uncomfy (but at the same time i was thinking to myself, maybe that’s the point? to make the viewer feel uncomfortable? idk it didn’t fully sit right w me) i just saw anatomy of a fall last night and i 100% agree with everyone’s thoughts on that damn dog. outstanding!!! i really loved american fiction, it was probably the best theater experience i’ve had in a while. past lives also hit me WAY harder than i expected, such a beautiful movie. i just followed you on letterboxd a few days ago and i’ve really been enjoying you reviews 🤓

I have never agreed more with a video, I had sky-high expectations of KOTFM after reading the book and annoyed everyone around me about it for months. Yet in October when I saw it in a theatre with my dad, my jaw was on the floor. It underlines and highlights its point so well and explains the disgusting way these murders were allowed to happen. "The Zone of Interest" was one of the best movies of the year, regardless of whether or not it was uncomfortable to sit through. That was the point, much like "Grave of the Fireflies" or "Come and See".

impeccable opinions as always thank you - movies like Zone of Interest are always interesting to me in awards ceremonies because they’re really a different type of media imo, like that is a audiovisual art piece more than a narrative movie which makes it really hard to judge.

I've seen all the best pic nominees and almost all the best international film nominees and out of ALL of the best movie I've seen this Oscar cycle is Io Capitano. Talk about a film that I'll never watch again for how gut wrenching it is. It's even more intense than Society of the snow. I hope Io Capitano wins the best international film Oscar but I doubt it. Zone of Internet will likely win (cause yes it's also nominated best international film) but it truly was not even close to as incredible

And I agree with your take on Poor Things. There were too many problematic scenes regarding her "furious jumping" and her mental developement. This is also the first time for me where I've managed to see every best picture nominee before the ceremony, which I'm personally quite proud of. I personally think it's a very strong set of nominees this year, with only one film that I don't really like, and the rest ranging from pretty good to great. American Fiction was a bit uneven for me, loved the whole satire angle and all the comedy that came out of it, but I felt my interest dwindling when we cut away to the family drama. Still, thought the performances were great (especially Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown), and the dialogue was sharp and witty, making its likely win for Adapted Screenplay very well-deserved. Anatomy of a Fall was absolutely phenomenal, gorgeously directed, fantastically acted, and beautifully edited. Most of all, it's brilliantly written, the dialogue is sharp and compelling, and it's able to explore the characters with so much depth and nuance. I reckon it's got Original Screenplay in the bag. Barbie's become something of a pain to talk about with all the discourse surrounding it in the last few weeks, but I really enjoyed it. A really fun romp with some lovely heartfelt bits, Margot Robbie and especially Ryan Gosling acting very well, and the production values are just phenomenal. It may win for Production Design and Costume Design, but I think it's fair to say that Billie Eilish is definitely taking Best Original Song. The Holdovers was an absolute delight, and my personal pick to win. It's got such a wonderfully warm, cosy and sentimental vibe which I really love, and the old-fashioned aesthetics only add to this. The performances are great from the main three, and I'm confident that Da'Vine Joy Randolph will win for Supporting Actress. It speaks to what a stacked year this is that a film as phenomenal as Killers of the Flower Moon will likely only get one award, but since it's going to be Lily Gladstone for Best Actress, I can't really complain. A fantastic piece of work, one of Scorsese's finest in my opinion, really dynamically filmed, excellent performances from pretty much everyone, a gorgeously atmospheric score (RIP Robbie Robertson), and phenomenal editing. Maestro is the one nominee that I didn't like, I found it a very superficial and bland film that told me nothing about Bernstein or his marriage, and generally left me bored. Looks amazing, and Carey Mulligan carried the entire film, but it deservedly won't win anything I don't think. Oppenheimer meanwhile is going to sweep, and quite deservedly so. It's an intimate character study wrapped in a big historical epic that somehow makes three hours of men talking in rooms into one of the most riveting films of the last year. I'm confident that Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Original Score, Cinematography and likely Editing will be going to it. I'm a sucker for bittersweet melancholic love stories, so I really vibed with Past Lives, and I'm disappointed that it barely got any nominations (Greta Lee not getting Best Actress is this year's big snub in my opinion), and it'll probably come away empty-handed. It's so beautiful, heartfelt and moving, with fantastic performances, and it's also the best-looking depiction of New York that I've seen in a while. Poor Things is definitely a controversial entry, and I definitely get all the criticisms - the points in this video were very interesting, perceptive and well-articulated. Me personally, I really enjoyed this one, I enjoyed the surreal trippy visuals and off-beat quirky humour, and the performances were all excellent, but I definitely get that it's not to everyone's tastes. It'll definitely win Make-up and Hairstyling, and if not Barbie, then it'll also win Costume Design and Production Design. Finally The Zone of Interest, which is one of the most harrowing and upsetting films I've seen in quite a while. A gut-wrenching depiction of how horrific atrocities can co-exist with our banal existences, with fantastic performances and direction. It definitely should (and probably will) win for Sound, and I can also see it winning International Feature Film.

I genuinely couldn’t finish “the zone of interest” I think I cried maybe 10 different times throughout the movie.

Seeing poor things in the best pictures is heartbreaking to me as a feminist. It's just dystopic that a movie that sexualizes a child in a woman's body (literally had her anatomy stolen from her and they do it to another woman and it's funny???) gets so much traction. It was visually gorgeous! And the music was amazing! But so disgusting of content I actually cried during the film because of how disturbing it was we were watching a young woman who couldn't put together full sentences have sex with a grown man in many explicit montages.

I was just pondering yesterday: I and lots of people who like movies, spend even more time and like even more to consume movie-related content. Whether it be reviews and lists on letterboxd, video essays and interviews on youtube or articles online. I’m not trying to complain or shame people - I also do it - I just find it interesting. The same effect was once when I was into reading, I spent much time on booktube. The title of this video is an example of this. Speaking and feeling of having to or not having to watch movies might well lead to holding movies as achievements and losing the inherent joy of enjoying great cinema. Just a little, and mostly subconciously, and this is just my hypothesis. Just my opinion and thoughts, and I dont mean to offend anyone.😊🎞️🍿

Respected the hell out of the craft and performances, you have to love/hate Mark Ruffalo’s character… but yikes why was the entire story about a literal child being taken advantage of…? Also madly vibed with Past Lives which just added to me already overthinking every past word and action I’ve made to get me where I am now. I enjoy how much you can articulate everything that I don’t know how to put into so many words. Also though I’m so sad that neither The Iron Claw or All of Us Strangers were nominated at all, as they were my favouriute 2 films from 2023 (assuming you count Suzume as 2022).

THANK YOU for saying what you said about Poor Things!! I feel like I'm the only person I know who disliked the movie. To me it didn't feel liberating but much rather it felt like it limited the "female experience". People I've talked to about this movie said the movie critiques grooming and sxual exploitation but to me it didn't seem like it. Or at least it didn't criticise it well enough.
