When Butter was first rescued, he was just a teeny, frail baby opossum. Watch him grow up to be the biggest snuggle bug! He covers his mom's face in kisses, even while she sleeps ❤️

Saturday I found a small joey possum. it was attacked by a cat. I flushed the bite and larve out with antiseptic and gave a small dose of antibiotics mixed in water melon juice. Two days later he started eating. Last night he ate 2 ounces of hamburger, same thing this am and for lunch. He is doing great. He even had fruit fly larves in his eye sockets and had to flush it out with saline and treat with teramcin ointment. All infections are now healing

Since they are marsupials, their normal body temperature range makes it impossible for them to contract rabies. They only contract rabies if they are exposed while they are already running a fever. Unfortunately, this can happen when they eat inorganic materials that can cause intestinal blockages ie plastic, styrofoam, etc. making them sick. Their blood has unique properties which kills ticks moments after the possum is bitten. They also can survive venomous snake bites that could kill an adult human. They kind of pass out for 45 min or so once the venom takes affect and then kind of walk it off. Possums are awesome!!!

@@sheenahope3586 Yay!! Thanks for this generous share Sheena! 😀 Love learning this! On KQED or some other public radio station, there was someone talking about how 160 years ago, we cohabitated with animals even in cities. He said you’d see pigs, wild dogs, coyotes, chickens, and more just walking around minding there business, and is minding our. On another occasion I heard there were hundreds of 🐳 whales living living off the coast of central CA. One day there will be balance again, we may not love to see it, but life is too intentional to let a few billion humans take it down.

Watching Butter's sweetness made me melt. He is so darn adorable. I just loved they way he hugged his mom's feet with such affection. I think it would be nice if the mom could adopt another domesticated possum so Butter has a same-species friend to be a possum with. However, that might not be essential. Having a life filled with love is the most important thing.

Wow, thank you for opening my eyes to this. If I have to be honest, previous to this video, I was afraid of them, even though I’m 54 years old, all I’ve ever heard in my entire life is how dangerous they are, how vicious they can be, how they destroy everything in sight and carry disease. Your video has completely changed my entire perspective on this topic, and now I want one! I had no idea they could be that loving and affectionate! More people need to post videos like this to take away the ignorance, many of us, especially me, have regarding wild animals, especially those that many people consider to be a pest or a danger. Looking at the images, especially when he was young, it’s absolutely adorable, you put them in an entirely different light, and I thank you for it!

Humans fear what they don't know. Once you take your time to know an animal, you will anderstand how they really are. We are taught to fear the unknown, to not trust, to kill what MIGHT be dangerous, even if it isn't. Possums, rats, pigeons, crows, mice: they are not pests, they are intelligent, smart and affectionate if they bond with you. One just needs to give them a chance and truly, really look at them.

Oh my gosh i loved your comment! Thank you so much for being open to it and for even watchin a video LIKE this. I try to teach my kids, every animal (hell to me, even every bug too) is precious and that all the negative stigmas they may have are almost always only out of their fear, their instinct, or in the predators category, their nature. Of course disease is very real and truly should be avoided but every animal deserves kindness from every human. And being scared of animals is totally natural but they're really all just here trying to survive like we are. None of them have capacity for malice. Youre so sweet for seeing this the way you did.

Even wild opossums are nothing like you described. They're certainly not vicious and dangerous. In hours of watching (both in person and on camera) opossums interacting with each other, raccoons, skunks and cats I've seen an opossum being aggressive _once._ That was one adult male chasing away another from a pile of food. They're actually quite shy around not just people but other animals and have very laid back, almost sweet, personalities. The disease thing is actually kind of funny because think about it...have you ever heard of a rabid opossum? No, because their body temperature is too low for not just rabies but most disease common to wild animals. I think their reputation is entirely based on people thinking they're ugly and scary looking. I agree that they aren't as cute as raccoon and skunks but they grow on you once you get to know them. They're very much an "it's what's on the inside that counts" animal. Once you see how sweet they are they suddenly look a lot cuter.

And came and told me were he let her go and told me if I find her I need to get my permit for two dollars but she never md it very fr that night she was crippled in her back legs so she went slow and would rest and she froze to death that night I lost it when I found my baby girl like that I felt like I failed her because they locked me out of my home and took them while I was gone is was so cruel and so wrong

When I was a little girl living in the country with our house on the edge of a forest, there was a newly built highway running near the edge of our property. Inevitably there were wild animals run over by cars. Therefore there were frequently baby animals that had been orphaned that would wander up in our yard. As an animal loving child, I felt compelled to help any animal that looked like it needed help. During the years that I lived there, there were TWO different instances that I found baby possums & became their mother! They each bonded with me like this, & my mom & dad let me take care of them. I also intended to let them be rehabbed then go back to the wild, but no - neither one of them wanted anything to do with living outside! I loved my possum babies! And they loved me! I am 61 years old now & I still love animals & help them any time I see them in need. It was wonderful to see someone being a possum mommy like I once was!! God bless!!!

@Michele S. yah actually I do not agree with you totally, but people these days do go to either extreme and away from reality. finding another species to replace love from your own is a social psychiatric disease that will increase as times come and loneliness increases globally. but at the same time, animals do have emotions, and all animals are not exactly at the same level of complex emotions and intellect, for example, like chimpanzee is way more developed than a possum, but people, in general, don't like to think complexly, for them it is in white and black. either they hate something or love something to the hilt. there is no middle way. though reality always lies in between. in shades of grey. IMHO.

I know that sounds obvious but some insist it's wrong to rescue a baby animal in need as they're meant to be in the wild but I think it's worth the risk of domesticating an animal is you're giving them a chance at life. @@zlotywest860 Opossums are actually very docile creatures, they just act though because that’s what it takes to survive. Obviously that doesn’t mean too much, since any animal can snap in the right circumstances, but since they’re naturally calm it’s a little less likely he’ll become aggressive unless it’s due to an extremely stressful situation (which if they care for him well, he shouldn’t ever be in) or possibly due to old age / illness.

@@ellenandwillhernandez4298 They are very fearful because people freak out when they see them. They will do everything they can to get away and even if you corner them they wont want to attack, but people act like they're crocodiles. Or they think they have rabies, which is nearly impossible due to their temperature I've heard people say they're different un their neighborhood but acting fearful and being aggressive are very different things

I wouldn't consider Butter to be like other average Opossums. She got lucky as they can get quite aggressive in the wild when cornered or threatened. You wouldn't want those teeth and claws ripping into you.
@cthulhuwu_
@cthulhuwu_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@dan_hitchman007 That is complete and utter horseshit lol. Anyone who knows a single fact about opossums know they are docile and nonaggressive. Even if threatened, they are most likely to hiss and then play dead.

@chryssoraidy9838
@chryssoraidy9838 2 жыл бұрын
@@dan_hitchman007 that's BS. They aren't "quite aggressive". A dog is more likely to bit at you than a opossum. The opposum will run away first. If it can't, it will freeze, and if it thinks playing dead will work, it will do that. But if YOU'RE aggressive, he will bare his teeth and hiss to scare you away, and then run if he can. You have to really push an oppossum to get it to attack, and it will be your aggression, not his, that started the fight. Think of all the animals - even moths - that are equipped with characteristics that scare other animals away, yet are totally harmless. Learn about what you fear. Usually you'll find out you're fearing someone or something that is less dangerous than you.

I saw a mother opossum that had been hit by a car and noticed that 4 babies were still clinging to her. I raced home and got a small box to put them in. There were three gray and one brown. I brought them home and we raised them, feeding them an egg and milk mixture, then rubbing their tummies so they could digest it properly. After a few weeks they graduated to cat food. The vet said that once they start eating meat they can go back into the wild. So, we released them back into the wild never to be seen by us again. We found them wild, they stayed wild, and they went back to the wild. Just a unique story I wanted to share. 🤗
