Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations.

Murphy has been loyal to Nolan for nearly two decades. It's about time he was given his own film. This might just be the film that gets both these men their respective Oscars. No more than they deserve. Can't wait for this. One of those rare moments where I called it correctly. I'm so glad they won. Well deserved. Also, my boy RDJ got his Oscar, too. Icing on top of a delicious cake 🎂

Finally a film that properly portrays the dark sides of the atomic bomb and how much those who developed it now suffer from guilt.The scenes are portrayed so dramatically and authentically that one can truly empathize with that time.

Watched this movie on a carnival cruise, laying on the pools chairs that over looked the pool obviously and the big movie screen.the movie started at 1230am, so it was really dark, and there was a light mist of rain the entire time. Such a incredible experience man, loved this movie. My next cruise will be timed with the release of some fire movies, specifically because of how good this viewing was.

I hope Cillian gets to deliver the iconic "destroyer of worlds" speech: "We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent" etc. etc. Fantastic haunting speech to this day (Edit) All the people feeling the need to say "Oppenheimer didn't come up with that, he was quoting from Hindu Scripture!", duh! He literally says that before he quotes it in the original audio.

i don't hate any people with bad history of their ancestors. sorry to say but in my history book japanese colonized indonesia, They colonized only for a couple of years but they gave us worst hell than the dutch. Japanese is known for their discipline and extreme courage even its inhuman such as the kamikaze warriors, so in my opinion if your people were not extremely patriotic in the wrong way, surrendering themself would be easier and the nuclear bomb won't be necessary. may peace last forever, the cycle of hatred needs to stop ! History mustn't be forgotten but can be forgiven.

"Until somebody builds a bigger bomb." I love that the line seems to be given in nonchalance, a passing comment, and yet at the same time it strikes true like an arrow through the chest. Be it the audience or Oppenheimer himself realizing that this bomb is not the end, but the beginning of a chain of competition to see who can be more destructive, who can take away the most lives with the push of a button.

This movie is just... wow! I don't think I have ever felt like this watching a movie! Its like a blend of being sad but also scared! I read that Christopher Nolan said it kind of had themes of horror, and watching the movie i think I knew what he meant! Very few movies can make you feel quite like this one can! Nolan once again shows he is an expertly craftsman in filmmaking! This stands as perhaps one of his more humble movies but also one of his greatest! Reminds me of his earlier movies! The cast is also AMAZING with Cillian Murphy delivering the performance of his career as Oppenheimer, sequentially becoming him, and pretty much securing himself an Oscar nomination for best lead actor! Robert Downy Junior also gives one of his best performances, reminding us all that despite 10 years as Iron man, he can still act! The soundtrack, sound and editing is also masterful and further creates a cinematic experience like no other! Overall an essential viewing experience about historic events that still remains very relevant to this day! One of my favorite Nolan movies! Final Verdict: Nolan delivers a powerful biopic that shows the dark side of human nature!

My grandpa was on a navy ship back when the military was doing nuclear testing on our own soldiers. Him and everybody else aboard was awoken early one morning, given special eye-protection and told to stand on the starboard side and look to the horizon. He said even wearing the eye-protection, the light from the initial flash was so bright, that when he shielded his eyes with his hand, he could see the bones in his fingers through his skin. My grandpa died of cancer, though it's fair to mention he was also an asbestos installer after his time in the military until that was phased out. Didn't really stand a chance to avoid the cancer, really.

The silence during the bomb was completely surprising. I think it was genius. Not only did it mirror the quiet they were actually experiencing, but they were horrifyingly surprised in that moment too. It actually served the uncomfortable tension of the moment far better than an MCU explosion for the 10 millionth time.

Finally watched it! What can I say. Outstanding 5* It truly deserved every single award it won. An incredibly thought provoking factual drama that makes one really fear what once again could become a reality. And instead of blaming the scientists who were instructed to create a destruction on a scale that the world had never witnessed and an event which changed history, blame the politicians who commanded it. One must bare in mind that the war in the Europe had concluded when Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945. So was it necessary for the United States to detonate two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people? . The subsequent trials and persecution of individuals that unfolded during the McCarthy years, whilst spreading fear of alleged communist and Soviet influence on American institutions and of Soviet espionage in the United States, blaming the very man they had previously anointed as their Saviour, is hypocrisy at its best. There is not one performance in it that was not truly convincing or mesmorisimg. This is the realisation that cinema, when told so brilliantly is a true form of art. Oppenheimer shatters the glass ceiling for any future film maker or actor. Be warned it’s long, but it never ever loses your attention. And that for me is a true reflection of perfection. I highly recommend it.

I'll reserve judgment until I see the movie. My father worked on the project, and yes, they really were uncertain if their invention would destroy the world. Dad was kept in the dark about what he was headed for until he got there. They just gave him a bunch of intelligence tests, combed over his educational background, grilled him about every person he knew, and put him on trains that went all over the country until he had no idea where he was. They trucked him up a steep mountain at oh-dark-hundred to a muddy, unfinished set of barracks. He started out in explosives, shunted over to the trigger problem, worked briefly with the guys tickling the dragon's tail, and then the big guys found out he was a good writer. So they gave him keys to the whole project and said "write up our history please." Too bad Chris Nolan never approached us. The only person I'm aware was interested in what my dad had to say was a philatelist who discovered he was the guy who collected Russian stamps and drove the mail screeners crazy.

Did you know that before the Manhattan project was finished there was supposed to be an invasion of mainland Japan codenamed Operation Downfall to take place in 1946, It was going to be larger than D Day in Normandy which in comparison had 12 divisions where Downfall had twice the number.

The speech scene was absolutely terrifying and the way the tension builds in 15-20 minutes before the bomb goes off and then complete silence, Nolan is a genius filmmaker. Also there were many scenes where music is used to dial up the tension and the background score is absolutely haunting and bone chilling to say the least.

I was caught COMPLETELY off guard when it was pure silence and the fire mushroom cloud rising before the cinema erupted in a mighty crack. This was definitely intentional because I remember Interstellar being the complete OPPOSITE, where Mann blows the airlock and there's a mighty bang before silence.

Yeah, no, the real story is a lot simpler. Oppenheimer made a big act about it because he wanted to be remembered as "the guy" that did it, even though there were a lot of other people with just as much contribution. J. Oppenheimer: "I dedicated years to willingly helped invent the most destructive weapon on Earth and now I feel bad about it how could this happen to me AAAAHHH I have become deatheriono! Mr. President, I have blood on my hands. It turns out Project Jap-nuker 15000 tons of TNT in a box was a weapon of terror, not a resolver of peace!" Truman: "Never come back into my office ever again you stupid fucking nerd." Oppenheimer knew exactly what he was doing, he did an act specifically so he would be remembered for it. He had zero regrets behind those fake tears.

it was a race against the germans, they wanted heavy water from norway in order to develop their own. I dont think his ambitions were scientific moreso existential. The irony is that the war with germany was over before they developed it and was dropped on japan instead who had no weapons program

I encourage you to continue sharing it, for words are incredibly powerful. It has been quite some time since anything I've read has moved me to tears, and this did. Merely knowing about the power or capacity of the bomb is not enough to fully or adequately appreciate just how heinous and wicked its use was. Reading this vivid and powerful account had a much, much greater impact and left a far deeper impression.

@@HipsterBrooo Get over yourself. Oppenheimer didn't say this until an interview much later. It's a fairly inconsequential quotation that everybody remembers him for, but it pales in the face of what he -- and all the other scientists -- actually DID: They insisted on creating the Atomic Energy Commission to prevent the bomb from becoming the exclusive toy of the US military.
