Oppenheimer - Only In Theatres 7 21 23
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations.

Cillian Murphy is so emotionless- yet conveys so much emotion with few words, or changes in facial expression. I can’t explain it. His eyes say nothing but tell you everything at the same time. It’s as if he always has knowledge that is too dangerous or disturbing for others to know. So I’m thinking this role is nothing short of spot on.

There’s different types of actors. Cillian is a purveyor of people. You can tell he prides himself on the subtle nature of humans in reality opposed to the theatricality of entertainment. Actors are typically very animated and their characters charismatic whether they’re good or bad. Animated expressions and charisma may be in abundance with actors, but every day people tend to be subtle and reserved. Cillian portrays his characters through a realistic lens opposed to a cinematic one. Even his more outlandish characters are delivered with a subtlety. Meanwhile one of the actors he’s worked with on numerous occasions, Tom Hardy is quite the opposite. Not to say there aren’t people who behave like Tom Hardy’s characters because there definitely are, but they’re few and far between. Cillian could never have done Bronson, while Tom could never have done 28 Weeks or Oppenheimer. We can often see a character and know 100% of what they’re feeling. While in real life it’s more like 50% because in real life people mask their emotions or attempt to bottle them up. So Cillian’s minimalism perfectly captures the conflict within a persons mind. The mask so many of us often hide behind. He acts through is mind opposed to with his body. There’s no right or wrong way, all the various methods add something different and each colourful in their own way and each relatable to reality too. But for the every day person, Cillian’s a master at it even if he’s insane, a gangster, a scientist or just some guy. He also does it with enough charm to make us like him in everything he’s in, but not overtly cool and charismatic like he’s unique like the way someone like Denzel Washington or Harrison Ford takes on characters. Because let’s face it most of us have never met someone as cool and confident as Han Solo unless you’ve met Harrison Ford himself. So you are right, Cillian was perfectly cast as Oppenheimer.

Exactly as Oppenheimer is, Oppenheimer saw himself as a part of a bigger machine instead of a person, as if the atomic bomb was inevitable and he did nothing wrong, that was his subtle psychological way of dealing with the guilt. Murphy it's a perfect match for this emotionless way of thinking and doing.

I don’t think he’s underrated, I think it’s just the fact that most of the things he does are produced in England, don’t get me wrong I love British TV and movies but it's not Hollywood. I think if he started doing more US stuff whether TV or movies he would very quickly be huge. And maybe he doesn't want to do Hollywood stuff, there are a lot of amazing British actors who even though it doesn't get them the same amount of exposure prefer only doing British stuff.

so exciting to see Murphy finally leading a movie again. The man is one of the most underrated actors of all time, and this trailer just confirms it. His voice carries so much weight even as he speaks so softly. Combined with the stunning visuals and the knowledge of the history, this trailer had me on edge immediately, and held me there for its brief 2 minutes. I can't wait to see the finished film. Nolan films are always an event, and this feels like no exception. the interesting thing to me, is that this feels unique in his filmography. Not an action film, or a puzzle box we're trying to unravel. This feels more intimate, personal, and at the same time, the implications of what we're seeing are massive and positively terrifying. July 21st cannot come soon enough

Making films like this about pivotal moments in human history to get everyone on the same page about how terrifying our history has been and how much more it can be if it all goes wrong...
