Scene from Oppenheimer with actual footage from the Trinity Test edited in (had to further chop up some of the movie footage for Copyright reasons).
Trinity Test colorized footage taken from here: • Trinity Test HD Colour...
I don't own any of the Oppenheimer footage, all rights to Universal. Made this for commentary and educational purposes.

The thing is the dynamite explosion looks like the explosions we've all seen before, just _more of it._ Something about nuclear explosions just hit different; it isn't just the size, but the fact that something that big has one cohesive shape to it; it isnt 100 explosions stacking on top of each other, it is a titanic singularity among us mortals

This. Honestly out of all the shots, the initial explosion is the only REAL dud, with the three separate fireballs in each direction, compared to the reality of the infinitely fast expanding mass of plasma and fire (that he captured beautifully in the first 30 seconds of the movie).

Actually it really is just the size. If you stack 1,500 tons of TNT and detonate it it will look almost exactly like a nuclear blast. The power will also be the same. The only issue is Nolan didn't use TNT. He used gasoline and Hollywood explosives, nowhere near enough of it either. To be fair, 1500 tons of TNT would have cost tens of million of Dollars and I'm not sure on the legality

I was disappointed with Nolan's explosion. It's a shame because everything else about the scene was pure perfection. The build up and tension was incredible and I greatly appreciated the sound delay for the blast wave. His explosion looked like a generic "Die Hard" action movie type explosion... like they farted some gasoline, lit it on fire, and slowed down the footage. No pressure wave was visible - no plasma ball shape - the iconic mushroom cloud shape struggled to form properly - and you could clearly see individual fire embers/particles which would not be possible at that scale, let alone from 10+ km away. As adamant as Nolan was to not use CGI... he definitely should have for this set-piece. It's not like he's never used CGI before... his black hole scene in Interstellar was completely CGI and it still looks timeless and iconic a decade later. His explosion in Oppenheimer however... it already looks outdated and poorly aged. People have a stigma for CGI because companies abuse/exploit artists to rush out crap CGI with strict deadlines. If CGI is well executed, it is just as artistic and timeless as practical effects. Smoke and fire simulations are really good now days with significant advances in technology. Even if he didn't want to do the scene as completely CG, at the very least he should've kept the base of the footage practical and added CGI upon the footage to beef it up and make it look larger. Either that or actually denote a smaller MOAB explosion (obviously he couldn't do a real nuke), but a MOAB explosion in slo-mo could've been a better representation for the scale of the actual Trinity test - rather than a few barrels of gasoline.

I think the real problem with this scene wasn't that it didn't use original test footage, but that it showed to much of the explosion. Like Maxime_G said in one of the comments on this video, this movie isn't about the bomb, it is about the people who made the bomb. And so instead of quickly cutting back and forth between the characters reactions and the explosion it would have been better to let the scene focuse a little more on the former. Also, not showing too much helps with the scale and awesomeness of the scene. A problem with both the actual test footage and the practical effects version of this scene is that seeing both or even one edge of the fire ball and mushroom cloud in frame makes the explosion look small and unimpressive. Though I do think it is much worse for the practical effects version because it already looks small and unimpressive to begin with. Both versions of this scene are at their best when we only get to see close ups of the explosion. Huge roiling clouds of dust and super heated air fill the screen edge to edge as the actors watch, illuminated by the blinding flash of light and eerie orange glow.

Yeah, as much as I dug the film, I did think the actual test was pretty lame. It was like a firecracker in comparison to the real thing.

It may seem like a lie, but there are countries that actually tested atomic bombs in inhabited cities. And with two types of nuclear bombs. Some people defend the use of the atomic bomb, but if its use was justified when victory was imminent, it would also justify the use of the atomic bomb by Russia, which was in even more trouble.

I was really disappointed with the explosion in Oppenheimer after so much hype. I really wanted to see the fireball in all its scale, that thing was 600m across, a fireball the same temperature as the Sun's surface. The practical effects looked too much like a normal fire explosion, plus he used way too much closeup shots that prevents the viewer from realizing the scale of the explosion, i haven't seen any depiction of a nuke in fiction that properly conveys how massive they are.

Christopher Nolan is a good director, but my god, his 'no CGI' stand is so dumb. All he had to do to make the perfect looking bomb scene is out CGI over real footage, using it as a referenc, and then bring that to life! Give us a new angle never before scene. But noooo, he had to use 'practical effects', which looked nothing like atomic bomb. Stubborn old man doesn’t realize CGI is a tool, and like all tools, it can be used poorly OR well.

Might have been a good idea not to have unleashed it on humanity... twice. Seems the Democrats who held majority in both chambers and the White House deemed it necessary. Eisenhower was against it "on two counts" as he stated.

Oh my god! This is how the scene _should_ have been filmed. The practical effects are profoundly disappointing and what is that? Particle effects? Really? Was Michael Bay a consultant? The practical effects of the motion picture explosion do not even come _close_ to the reality. Definitely the practical effects of the Trinity test were a shocking disappointment in an otherwise, nearly perfect movie. Having said that, it could have been worse. They _could_ have elected to use CGI D: I want a copy of the movie with this instead. Just Oh my god!

I think if Nolan supplemented his explosion with _some_ CGI, it would have looked more like a nuclear weapon. I mean if the audience can't tell something's CGI then what's the problem?

Indeed...I honestly dont understand Nolan's obession to try to re-create nuclear explosion with ordinary explosives....it was never going to work or look even remotely what the real thing was

Nope, one of the most overrated movies of all time and Im not just talking about the disappointing decision to try to recreate nuclear explosion with real explosives...the last 45 minutes of the movie was utter boredom and felt like all of that bullcrap after the test was concluded could have been warpped in 15 minutes.
