(MINOR spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
In this video, your old- or maybe new- pal the Book and Movie Guy attempts to shed some analysis as to what makes a three hour movie work, and what might make a three hour movie, well, not work.
I talk a lot about the recently recently Christopher Nolan Film "Oppenheimer," and compare it to some other three hour movies like "Batman v Superman," "Titanic," "The Batman," "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," and "The Hateful Eight." I cover some specifics about editing and pacing, as well as the different approaches to storytelling and structure different three hour movies might take.

I'm impressed by Christopher Nolan's decision not to turn this movie into a trilogy or a cinematic universe simply to maximize profits. It's refreshing to come across a standalone film that feels complete in its own right. "Across the Spider-Verse," had me on the edge of my seat, expecting a powerful climax that never materialized. It was like experiencing "cinematic blue balls," if you will. The argument for ongoing stories and continuity is understandable since the human psyche craves for more. A perfect example of this is the monumental climax of "Endgame" in the MCU, the culmination of 10 years of storytelling with annual movie releases. However, there's a limit to how much we can expand a saga without diluting its impact. Now, the MCU is the "sick man" of sagas, on the road to it's eventual decline, falling from grace like the Great Ottoman Empire. In the end, I appreciate that Nolan chose to respect the essence of this movie as a standalone piece rather than succumbing to the temptation of endless sequels and spin-offs. It allows the audience to savor the story in its entirety and cherish it as a unique cinematic experience.

I agree. I find myself being deterred by franchise films lately. I feel like that' somewhat hypocritical of me given the purpose of this video, but there's a case to be made about the difference between a long story that works because it's self contained a short story that doesn't work because it's broken up into too many installments.
