Oprah Winfrey talks with New York Times bestselling author Dr. Shefali Tsabary about the revolution of conscious parenting, creating an awakened family and raising confident children. Dr. Shefali discusses her book, "The Awakened Family," where she provides daily tools for parents on how to manage expectations, avoid the pressure to succeed and embrace the child they have rather than the child they want. In this interview, Dr. Shefali challenges myths of traditional parenting and provides skills that allow children to grow into their own authentic selves. (Original air date: August 7, 2016)

Visions of Nebula The truth is that Oprah's mother didn't spell the name correctly. Oprah has said that her mother was naming her daughter from the biblical name Orpah, I believe. So, even her mother didn't get the name right. In every moment, choose compassion, kindness, and Love. May you then experience the same beyond measure.🕊️

When I entered this world, I made a commitment toward creating challenge and opposition; this caused many issues throughout my life. I became a teacher and the kids retaught me everything I needed to live a blissful life. I highly recommend teaching for those who are born into broken home; refusing to comply has made me the best version of myself!

I do rember a black man came to out house one night very late he was bleeding where somebody had beat him up. Mother took him in cleaned his head wound and got him relaxed called the dr. Payed for his care and we were very poor. But my mother was a wonderful person. She loved everyone. God bless you.

I always watch Oprah. I watched Dr Shefali a long time back. Very interested in her theory of the child showing us lessons. My son is so like me and I have changed now and so is he changing. I never told either of my children what to become in life, however, feel I maybe should have pushed more. My parents didn’t push me but my Mum only did 2 years schooling & just wanted me in working world as schools made her afraid when I got into trouble. I’ve learnt so much listening to children and don’t believe that elders know best😂😅 some youngsters are so tuned in & we can learn from them. Stay safe 😘🙏🏼😇

I rea!ly enjoyed this. I'd like to offer an alternative theory to the doctor's assertion that the desire to have a child is about the Self. As a Christian, through my experience communicating with God, I've come to believe that children are one of the greatest gifts in life, and if one is called upon to be a parent that the challenge they must is meet is to dissolve the Self, serve the needs of the child ( "attune" is the word she uses ). Perhaps she states this on the predicated notion that her audience is unawake ("unsaved" in the Christian faith). So much of this interview is brilliant in its simplicity. I hope that it continues to reach and heal.

Let’s not forget that parents did not know any better, they did the best that they could. My father walked away and my mother was alone working to raise us but because I did not have a father, anything my mother did or said, would get me upset. She wanted the best for me without having the right information. I apologized to my children for being controlling and now I have allowed them to choose their life. They are certain rules in my home such as: if they go to school, I will support them financially but if they decide not to go to school, they should work and pay rent or move out. They have choices.

I would agree to a certain point with Dr. Shefali because not every lacks empowerment if the definition of the is being used correctly or understood as such. The family I came from had a very conscious parenting of what was going on in the childrens/grandchildrens well being and I grew up with that love, respect for myself and others

This is a great message for parents that try to live through their kids but somethings that she is saying i have to wonder if she has a teenager at home because a lot of what she is saying works with younger kids but as teenagers sometimes you have to through out the parenting books and learn to adjust to your kids.

I'm impressed how you Oprah (sorry to be that direct in turning to you, I'm not a native speaker, so that's why I might find turning to people whom I don't know on you terms strange, but it also feels strange to call you Ms Oprah, or Ms Oprah Winfrey, so sorry about awkward beginning) so I'm impressed you were able to recognize and admit in front of your child that you've made a mistake with the school choice. I think it must be very empowering for her even though you might have hurt her. From the child's perspective, when I see myself as a 30-year old daughter of my parents, for me more important at this moment would be not that they wouldn't have made any mistakes at all while bringing me up, but if they plucked up the courage now to say sorry for the things that didn't go well on their side. I don't think they will, but I can imagine it is just too hard for them. So it's amazing, what you did :)

Abuse mentally emotionally physically affects children’s lives forever. Fame and fortune of hundreds of people have proved to the world where that is obviously not happiness, money and power IS NOT THE ANSWER. Ego is evil. Great game and fortune does not mean you’re not human without responsibility and free to break laws and abuse people lives. Many very poor people are very happy and caring, never hurting others. The character of the person and knowing no one is above or below anyone

If these ideas are revolutionary or not, remains to be seen. Like it is with the wind, what some people would call a storm, others would define as a light breeze. Dr Tsabary likes to include divinity and the universe in her thinking. Fine with me. People already did and do that for ages. I don't belong to them, though. I speculate and dream about possibilities too, but prefer to stay closer to a reality that is less far away. Long story short, for many years now I play with the idea that humans are not only physically defined by their ancestors, but also mentally. Prior to your birth you already possess what I would like to call "primal knowledge/wisdom", harboring a lot of knowledge and wisdom inherited by you from the many ancestors/generations that came before you. All this is stored in your core. Therein sits your essence, the pure you. So far so good. But from your first moments outside of the womb, this primal knowledge/wisdom is immediately snowed under, even suppressed, by the norms, values, expectations, traditions, and morals, transferred to you by good willing (or not so good willing) parents, teachers, pastors, doctors, and other so called authority figures, surrounding you in what some people call “culture”. That’s how your habits are formed. If these habits significantly differ from your primal knowledge/wisdom, you may feel that something is missing, that something is not right, or something is lost. This can feeling can range from mild to extremely disturbing, without knowing why. Obviously the primal knowledge/wisdom of people descending from humans belonging for ages to the same society/culture, will differ less from what is thought to be normal, healthy, good, bad, acceptable, right and wrong in their current society, than will be the case with people whose ancestors came from all corners of the world, from a variety of cultures. Hence, people with a multicultural background are more prone to feelings of discomfort, unhappiness, confusion, dissatisfaction, and that “something is missing”, than people with a mono-cultural one. Many so called disorders and mental illnesses (e.g. as described in the DSM-5) are based on the discrepancies between people's primal knowledge/wisdom and their developed habits, forced upon them by the carriers of the culture they happen to belong to. Back to Dr Tsabary. If parents want to go along with her "conscious parenting", then they should find out about their own primal knowledge/wisdom first. Not an easy task, but it's worth the effort, because if they succeed, they will have come close to the primal knowledge/wisdom of their kids as well. Which will make it easier to understand their kids, and support them to reconnect with their primal knowledge/wisdom too. Okay, okay. I'll stop now, and leave it at that 😛

Do you know what is also great for our children? Not abusing them. The following behaviors are harmful to all of society as a whole and the negative effects which last for a very long time: All and every sexual crime, especially the ones to children. All forms of humiliation or verbal abuse, to anyone. All forms of neglect incluing emotional, physical, lack of basic care needs i.e. food, sleep, clothing, shelter etc . Police should BE funded to Stop Crime which also includes Prevention. That's what the above mentiones behaviors are - they are crimes. And Officials near the top have take extra caution that lower-ranked officers do not cause further injury to an already traumatized person. This includes pyschological or emotional pain and instability also know as a mental health issue. Very common and probably getting worse. Basically, tauma causes mental health . Society pays for MH through law enforcment, fire and paramedic response, prisons, hospital care, OHIP you name it. Coincidently, we are all going broke and the planet is giving us a serious wake-up call. Do you think we have enough common will to started living differently in our one and only home. This is it. We should take care of it, if we want our children to have a place to live. As a species we need to leran how to USE less resources as we are buring thru our current, non-replacable supply. Not smart.

While I agree with all of this and always challenge myself, my ego and my expectations for my kids, how do you deal with something like your child being with individuals who influence them to make bad choices and convince them that your parent is the enemy because here we are having fun and your parent doesn't want you to have fun when their definition of fun for example is illegal substances. How do you manage that? I tried logic. Explaining why illegal substances are not fun and how they impact your mind and self esteem, but this is also interpreted as me being controlling. there is a difference between trying to force your own ambitions and expectations on your child and between helping your child make better choices when you see their current choices are causing them harm.

Hana Dudeen I feel your pain. Could u try connecting with your child’s ‘higher’ self? The part of them that knows that he/she is hanging with these ppl because of a lacking or self-loathing deep-down inside. Soft White Underbelly is a wonderful & highly recommended KZfaq channel filled with testimony from ppl who chose the ‘dangerous’ or rebellious path then found themselves on the street with a lifelong addiction. Could you go to therapy with your child using the approach of how to fix your family dynamic rather than how to fix your kid? Could you get your child to admit at the very least that he/she is very unhappy & then seek a remedy from there without pointing blame. I can imagine it’s all very exasperating & exhausting. I WAS that child. All I wanted was my parents to lean in & be curious about my emotional well being & have the courage to engage, take charge & take the necessary steps for us ALL to make changes. I came from privilege & my parents had started with zero. They were incapable of understanding or even seeing what was up with me (drugs, booze, raging eating disorder) bc they had so successfully provided a family life way way beyond the one that they had. Good luck ♥️

@@Carol-S Thank you Carol. I cried reading your message. You and your parents are me and daughter. I did come from nothing. I too worked very hard to get to where I am and I am still at work! That's not the issue I have with my daughter though. I am acutely aware of the generational gap between us but also how similar we are on an emotional level. I don't approach her with ego. she hides behind hers sometimes when I get too close to what really hurts, but she has acknowledged all of those things you said. She understands she is unhappy and why and how she is trying to deal with her pain. She also knows I am on her side and I have my struggles too but we are always honest about where we are coming from emotionally. I connected with a therapist recently and I will pursue that path for her. I will have a look at the channel you recommended too. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this note to me. I get everything she is telling and it is 100% true to me. But I struggle to understand how to deal with moments when your child is still drawing on the wall, even if you told 100 times to not or refuses to do homework or something like that, without being that controlling parent? I do understand why the child is doing it, she is being a child, being in the moment and curious about how it is to draw on the wall, she is not doing it to annoy me. But still she needs to learn some rules to live in this Society, like not hitting or drawing on everything or whatever. I know you first understand why she doing it and connect to her and explain why not. But still she is a child testing and still doing things dispite knowing she should not doing ( and this is totally normal). But still, How do I teach these things without being a controlling parent? Can someone explain?

It's crazy that Oprah has to preface anything with don't go tweeting me. While she might not have her own kids, she's surrounded with those who do and runs a school.

Greetings. I'm from Virginia and I am taking money out of my own pocket to buy food for the homeless in my area. I'm barely working but I take what I have and I make it work in order to see the smiles and appreciation I get when Helping the less fortunate. I fill the bags with sandwiches, face masks, chips, fruits, crackers, n etc... I fill up coolers with ice n bottles of water. I drive around picking up donations n I match whatever I'm given. If You would like to help, you can contact me on Ig @rofelmotivation or you can Cash App at $feedwithfel Thanks in advance.

Americanos nem se importam com nós brasileiros, a verdade é essa, nem sabem que brasileiros existem, nao se iludam. Americans don't even care about us Brazilians, that's the truth, they don't even know that Brazilians exist, make no mistake.. Americanos se preocuparem com Brasileiros, é como Brasileiros se preocuparem com a Somalia . Americanos nem sabem que o Brasil existe. Americans worry about Brazilians, it's like Brazilians worry about Somalia. Americans don't even know that Brazil exists

sorry but I don't see this as revolutionary at all. It's so clear especially to the sons and daughters of narcissistic parents that parents should look at their children as a separate human being rather than an extension of them. Actually Christianism said this long time ago: children are sons of God and we should respect them and don't be worried for them.
