This week we cover a member request and talk about the screw extractor tool. When an eyewire closure screw breaks off in the frame chassis the extractor tool can often get the broken piece out. Optician training includes the proper use of hand tools. When successful the tool saves both the frame and the day! I cover the proper use of this unique optician hand tool and also talk about optical taps, drill bits, screws and the deburring tool too.

I had the case of the barely protruding screw that clamps the glass . Took the frame to multiple shops who gave it little chance due to the risk.

Thank you so much for that tip I literally thought I was going to go crazy mine is the number 2. screw option LOL and it's in a pair of sunglasses and I thought I wasn't going to be able to fix it because the screw is stripped so thank you so much :-)

Never heard of a deburring tool though done 20 years in optics. Sounds great just ordered one to try it's listed as "screw finishing tool" at Hilco UK

Clamp either end of the screw very tightly with two pieces of wood with flat headed wood screws or studs the width of the screws in the glasses and turn the glasses.

A lot of screws are secured with retaining compound (such as Locktite). Heat is needed to soften it. The easiest way to apply the heat is to heat the extractor tool (or a screwdriver if the head is at least partially intact). Sometimes red heat is needed on the tool tip (use old screwdriver or extractor). Heat to redness, apply for a few seconds only and turn, then remove tool promptly. Process may be repeated, but allow full cooling between tries. Usually after 1 or 2 tries, screw can be removed. Tiny amount of acetone (applied using pin-tip to screw) can also help for nail-polish-secured screws.

Do you have a video that tells you how to remove a Phillip head screw in the hinge that is stripped? Using a screw extractor or whatever you recommend?

A pair of pliers with a stud either arm a little less than the diameter of the screw gripping both ends of the screw might be a useful tool.

Spray the screws with WD40 (heads) wait about half an hour. Then put the side of the glasses and screw under hot water out of the tap for about 30 seconds. Wait about 30 seconds then use canned air with the nozzle and shoot a jet of air to the top of the screw wait about 30 seconds. Now you use a precision screwdriver and this is important push the bottom of the rim around the glasses upwards and the top rim around the glasses downward then grip it then use the precision screwdriver to take out the screw.

Hello, I'm having similar problem like this but the screw ia a broken bit on the bottom of the nosepad holder.

Currently dealing with stripped screws in the frame of 1970s American Optical Original Pilots---I got two screws out and will try the extractor on the other two, but how do I know the correct screw dimensions for replacement? Or what tap/thread chaser to use to make sure the threads are restored?

I found this video doing a search for "titanium frame screw extraction". I have this very problem with my titanium frame. Screw holding the wire to the chassis sheared and none of the local opticians could fix it. One of them put the lenses into a cheap plastic frame for now, but I'd like to recover the frame is possible. Can you recommend someone in the Ft Myers, FL area, and if not, someone who I can ship it to?
