Tom Barr talking about co2/02 flux with some additional links:
barrreport.com/threads/co2-wh...
barrreport.com/threads/co2-o2...
In this video I go over how you can optimize your pressurize co2 within your planted aquarium and or high-tech aquascape. I go over co2 diffuser types and putting your co2 on a timer. In greatly detail I talk about how the surface biofilm, surface agitation, and co2 and o2 flux relate to stabilized co2 levels in your aquarium as well as even distribution of co2 throughout your aquarium. I also talk briefly about the synergistic relationship between light and co2. Thanks for watching ADU Aquascaping.

I have ran my current fish house for just over a year, 13 tanks in multiple rooms 7 of which run co2 through a 6 way splitter, a two way manifold, and a lot of co2 line. I thought I knew a thing or two about co2 distribution in tank; running good levels and keeping multiple tanks HEAVILY planted including an all Crypt tank and an all Eriocaulon tank, until I watched this video. PekTek sent me your way and now I am a subscriber. Just wanted to let you know I appreciate your time and effort and your information is definitely useful and needed. I will stay tuned for more.

C_Town Hey thanks. Well it sounds like You're doing pretty well to me. Basically if you have a set volume the quicker the CO2 leaves that volume the more you can pump into that same volume. It creates the same CO2 levels because the flux is higher, so it would be more even distribution. I hope that makes sense. It is more of a concern with larger and deeper tanks. I have a small tank with a pretty large canister, so of course I am going to have good distribution. But someone with poor circulation, and poor surface agitation will most likely have poor distribution, and more than likely a surface biofilm, which depends on O2 levels and organics in the water. We want the biofilm. We just want it growing predominantly in the filter. Similar to water treatment plant some the biofilm is a natural coagulant and traps organics to be decomposed. So my new theory is this, do not touch your filter media. In most cases it will not be over come by too much sludge. After a long period of time, once detritus from the filter starts entering the aquarium through the outflow than you can clean your filter. Just keep the organics low in your aquarium, the detritus and decaying plant matter and don't overfeed. But don't clean or touch your filter. This will better decompose the organics. And of course try to have high O2 through surface agitation or a wet dry filter, or even surface skimmer. Hope this gives you some more ideas. More efficiently decomposing the organics also uses less O2, because the bacteria will be more mature, so this helps the O2 levels be more stable as well. It all has to do with basic husbandry, but we often take it for granted or don't know the actual underlying reasons as to why we are doing the husbandry. It has to do with having good water quality. High O2 and low organics. This has to come first, even before we worry about nutrients, light, or CO2.

I’m starting up a high tech 75 gal. Tank with co2, led lighting and a fairly large number of plants. In some videos I’ve watched they stated that the co2 should be turned off at night and an air stone should be run all night until the co2 starts again in the morning. It seems to me this could cause a lot of fluctuation, any thoughts?

I do agree with most of the aquascaping competitions going in the miniature train set direction than what their names suggest. A simple addendum to rule set could be that a certain percentage of the photographed tank has to be plants.

Thanks for sharing this ultimate truth with us! In this fact you stated how would this work when you are running a cold water tank? Less light and co2 probably? And when it get summer and the temp will increase get more light and co2 then in winter right? Mine temp is 18 Celsius atm but in summer it will probably get to 25 for a few months. Love your work thanks so much! And subbed.

Had previously watched a similar video by Dennis Wong and your video helps to reinforce what I learned from Dennis and extends with additional info on biofilm. The 2 of you are the best on YT who readily share your knowledge with the community at an understandable yet deep level that I actually apply to my planted tanks. I have watched your past videos on fertilization but wanted to ask if you will be again covering this topic with your current fert schedule. I am always modifying my mixes but am interested in the micro nutrients as there has been past and current discussion (sometimes heated) on micro toxicity/deficiency on The Planted Tank forums that have included Tom Barr. Keep the videos coming.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
Rod S hey thanks for the kind words Rod. Yes, Dennis did a great video on the topic and it reminded me that we needed even more information on optimizing. Haha. Yeah the old toxicity club. Well I am no totalitarian when it comes to dosing, but just the other day I was thinking about how I could make a couple simple videos where I share my current dosing and talk about dosing methods. Also, maintenance methods. Just simple explanations so more people can follow along.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
Rod S I know K can be abundant and not impede uptake of other nutrients. But as far as aquatic plants and micro toxicity I am don't know. I have never noticed any issues with ample amounts of nutrients in the water column.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
What has Tom been saying about it?
@rods1597
@rods1597 6 жыл бұрын
Well essentially he was being questioned (at times critically) to provide scientific type of data to justify his use of higher concentrations of nutrients. He would mentione he did not experience the type of plant growth issues that were being discussed but did provide some dosing info based on the tank and plants and he did not strictly follow EI for all cases. It became a big thread but many posts were deleted by the admins for there attacking/accusatory nature and one or possibly two members got banned. I believe based on this thread PPS-Pro changed there recommended dosing for CSM+B from 0.14 to 0.01 using Fe as the proxy. This was about 1 to 2 years ago and fast forward to today and there is a TPT thread that's reviewing customizing micros at higher concentrations based on the success of member burr740 who won the recent Dutch category at AGA. You can check out burr740's journal on TPT. His tank is pretty amazing.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
Rod S Without any conclusive experiments that have been replicated 30+ times there is no way to know for certain. Fe is the main nutrient of concern. Someone could do 4 1 liter containers. 1 control just RO water, and 3 at varying levels of Fe, with all other parameters identical. Report the results and do this 30 times. Your results would be the truth in regard to aquatic plants and Fe concentrations. Then you would want to do this with 30 different species as well to make it truly a theory. So 4 1 liter containers for 30 plant species, and repeat at least 30 times. Preferably 100+ times. A lot of work. And may have to adjust time frames and or exposure times to Fe, etc... A lot of work. Or we can just observe thousands of tanks that all dose EI, take a survey and collect information that way through photos and see that for most toxicity doesn't apply. It's like when people say chlorine is toxic, so don't use it in drinking water. Right, 1 out of 2 million people may die from it. Are those significant numbers? No. Well Lima, Peru followed this advice and stopped using chlorine for residual in their local water. Over 20,000 died in one year from waterborne diseases.

I'm running a powerhead and HOB for flow and surface oxygenation. The HOB is also my backup to the canister. Zero surface scum but will see when I add pressurized co2 this weekend. Going to start slow and measure my ph/oh as well as a drop checker.

You ever found a way to best distribute the c02 with HOB filters? I can't figure out if I should place it under the intake or have it circulate round the tank.

ADU Aquascaping I think the last time I shaved my chin is 8 years ago. After some years I decided to stop shaving my cheeks too 😂. It’s a lot of work but I don’t like to shave and I also ride Harley so it’s the right look 😂😂.

ADU...someone that really knows what he's talking about and not just telling you to run crazy high silly amounts of co2 in there tanks to solve every problem there is like some of these forums,can't wait for your next big tank,what happened to your big tank you had? how about a moss tank for your next one ?

haha, well I have to keep it straight and sober now that my schooling is getting more serious. You are Polish? I watched your playground video. Your daughter speaks to you in English while you speak Polish!? Is this common to learn English at such an early age? And did you say, поопа сука/пупа сука? ахах. Или что? I don't speak Polish. Я говорю только чуть чуть по-русски. Я новичок.

Love the info provided. It has helped me a lot. I just wanted to ask if it would be ok to use an air pump to get more air into the tank as I'm using a canister filter and a sponge filter for my shrimp. Thanks.

Shershah Nazari it can help add a little more O2, but having more surface agitation of any kind can be good. Try getting more surface movement any way you can.

That was superfluous amount of great information. I am BRAND NEW to supplemental CO2 for aquariums, so bear with me. I'm awaiting my CO2 setup in the mail as I write this. I know there's a strong correlation between algae and light, but from what I'm gathering - algae DOES NOT utilize the supplemental CO2 bled into the tank in the same way our aquascape plants benefit from carbon dioxide...do I have that right...partially? I have tons of Java Fern that have dark-brown to black algae on their tips that I can easily clean off with my fingers (any suggestions other that the video for this issue?). Fascinating how CO2 can do A LOT more than just 'feed the plants.' I had no idea how important CO2 is regarding biofilm breakup, gas change, lighting, algae fixes, and decreasing the energy needed by the plant to synthesize light. One more thing: are there any contraindications in having an air-stone running at all times? Great video, thanks again.

Hey man...thank you for all your info on aqua setup. I have one question...i have 2 canister filters, one of them is connected to inline CO2 difuzer. My filter intake(suction) pipes are set diagonally, and my outtake is set on one corner for both filters. The one with CO2 is set to burst down, and the other is set up to agitate surface. Is this good setup? Thank you in advance.

hi, did I hear it correct that when your light is low or insufficient you have to increase your co2 injection. Nice video btw, new fan here from Philippines.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 2 жыл бұрын
Yes this is correct. This way the plant can better focus on the available light and not worrying about CO2. It's a simple synergistic relationship between light and CO2. Thanks for watching!

Hey i gota question would it be dumb use use a air pump and air stone to agitate the surface while the co2 is running or will the co2 escape more quickly because of the air pump ???

Dave whats up! you are very smart. Thanks for the vid. I watched this several times yet still confused. I understand that surface agitation is important for oxygen levels and to allow co2 to release. But when increasing surface agitation aren't we increasing the amount of co2 we waste? When trying to optimize co2, wouldn't this be counterproductive. are you saying, to optimize co2 we must waste a little? I have an inline diffuser by gla running on a 406. I am experiencing this film you speak about. I have my outflow just at the top, so i can hear a faint trickle of water but I am afraid I am wasting money. What would you recommend. THanks
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
yeah if you want better distribution throughout the tank. If you increase the amount leaving that specific volume, you can increase the amount entering the volume to achieve the same ppm levels of CO2, so it will be around 30 ppm of CO2, but you are pumping more CO2 to gain that level, which will increase overall distribution within that specific volume. It can make the levels become more stable and consistent as well, which the plants and fish will benefit from more stable CO2 levels- growth of plants, fish respiration etc...
