Man, my teacher was exactly one of these "pushing in" ones, thank you for pointing that out! One of the reasons why I quit lessons with her was exactly because my breath support wasn't going anywhere in months, I feel like this is a first thing to learn as a singer. The siren exercise is insane to, thank you so much for posting this!

I have the exact same issues as him. Trying to sound pretty results in poor singing. When you know you can sing and some times you’re great but others not so; this is why - lack of support!

Lily - yeeeeesss!! This awareness is SO key. The most important thing a singer can perfect is the CONSISTENCY of their support.The reason the sound comes out great sometimes and not so great at other times is that sometimes you are grounded in a consistent support and other times you are probably not. Getting acquainted with the feeling of efficient support and then being there consistently (meaning, we don't change support when we change pitches, syllables or words) will make all the difference in the world to you. If you're interested, I have a free video tutorial specifically on The #1 Thing You Can Do To Be A More Consistent Singer. This is a phenomenal video, one of a scarce few vocal technique videos with a teacher who actually knows what they're doing. In truth this is just another lesson, just a day in the life, but it's crazy how utterly lacking KZfaq is in actual voice teachers who can effectively demonstrate good technique. A breath of fresh air amongst a red ocean of jokers on KZfaq with awful technique.

Hi🙂 You know, I have listened to 100’s of vocal singing approach and technique videos of a period of year. You.. precious heart, are a treasure. At least for me you are. What a find. You are teaching from experience of excellence and sensitivity to your own body, while relating to the feelings of others (both mentally and physically). Then, you take your training and study... and basically speak the truth in an understandable way, with ‘feeling’ and sensing our own bodies (because much of it is mental and even emotional). God bless you. I hope you are well. I hope your school is prospering. I hope you are stillll making videos. I asked for tips when singing with asthma but, I don’t want to be redundant. It was in the video where you imagine a square box in the back of your throat and mouth and hazel cavity. Belting, I think. Thanks so much. You truly speak my language and I deeeply appreciate it.

Hello Arden, I feel so confident in following your channel. A quick backstory about myself: I took lessons from a complete QUACK of a vocal coach, who did Skype lessons with me (he was in NYC) and he never, ever heeded my warnings or focused on my concerns when I told him that his lessons/teachings were hurting my voice. He told me to push past it, keep trying, etc. because he was essentially "never wrong". You get where I'm going here- I developed a terrible nodule on my right vocal cord. It stayed that way (I couldn't do any voice therapy at the time, so I accepted that I was "done") for 5 years. Miraculously, I found recently that my nodule has healed. It is truly a miracle; I feel blessed. That said, I am looking for help, tips and possibly to find a new coach soon if I find that I can get back to where I was (not the injury part, but I mean back to the progress I did make years ago, haha!). I had a question regarding something I am facing again: I always have trouble going from chest, mix (which I never truly got right, and it is what caused my awful injury), into head. What happens, is I start in chest, I feels solid, strong... But gradually, as I go higher, I tense up (even while focusing on being relaxed), and get tighter sounding, as well as resulting in a total "give up" collapse into "flipping" into a horrible light/heady/falsetto. Like my voice hits a hard ceiling/maxed-out and it falls completely apart. I'm awful at explaining things, I hope you know what I'm talking about. Oh! And with all of that, I also end up just getting louder like I'm yelling instead of singing. There was a time I got past that issue mostly, but as I said, my ex-coach started basically training me to squeeze, push and fight my throat. Truly, I would appreciate absolutely anything you could offer to my situation. If there is a video of your's that you could recommend; I am vocal clay in your hands :D

Hello! I tried this technique but I'm having some trouble with it. After I sing a phrase, I have to expell the extra air before breathing in. But when I do that my stomach contracts. If I try to use all the extra air before breathing in, I find myself almost gasping for oxygen. What am I doing wrong?
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aadrita, my guess is that you're probably over-breathing. When you use this method you learn to be SO much more efficient with the air on each phrase, meaning you're not using up as much air to sing the phrase which means you don't have to "tank up" so much when you inhale. You're probably used to pushing out waaaaayyy to much air on each phrase so you've had to "tank up" (or over-breath) for every phrase. Now that you're being more efficient with how you're managing your air in the phrases using these techniques, you don't have to tank up so much on the inhale. You can just let a nice, free, easy, released "life breath" come in on the inhale. Then you won't have so much air left over at the end of the phrase. If you do, YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET RID OF IT TO BREATH IN AGAIN. That would be like if you have some gas left in the tank when you arrive at the gas station, dumping it out each time before you fill the tank. It's inefficient and wasteful and takes extra time. Just release your body (release the muscles in your belly, release your ribs, release the jaw, open the throat) and let the air come in to fill up whatever space is left from the air you just used. So if you only used half your air on a phrase and you still have about half the air left, GREAT! You don't have to take a giant breath, just open your body and let the air come in to fill up the half that you just used.

@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Laurel, I'm glad you wrote because I can help clarify. You do not want to expand your stomach to breathe. You want to release it. Send the breath into the lungs in your back, don't send the breath into your stomach. Let your tummy release when you inhale, then engage (flex) those lower abdominal muscles gently down and out when you sing. Here's another video that may help you understand: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKeApZygnrOUhKM.html

@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
@ So your belly will definitely expand when you breathe if you release it, but I don't actually want you to focus on forcing your tummy to expand - or really focus on your tummy at all when you breathe - because that's not where the air goes. Just release your belly and then focus on sending the breath into your back because that's where the most mass of your lungs is. That's where the air needs to go. If you focus on your abdomen, you will likely force and manipulate and push in that area to make it expand which we don't want - it creates tension and also makes it difficult to engage those muscles when it's time to sing. So just release your belly, let it drop and soften when you inhale, you will probably feel a bit of expansion there but that's not really the focus. Make sense? Hope this helps clarify.

Im not quite understand on 1:14, does my stomach have to come up when inhale ?
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi K'malay, When you breathe naturally in your everyday breathing you release the muscles of your abdomen as you inhale. Most of the time when you release the abdominal muscles, the tummy area will expand outwards as the diaphragm pushes down on all your internal organs because there's really nowhere else for them to go but out. That's why your tummy pooches out when you inhale. But at 1:14 in the video, we are not talking about the inhale, we are talking about what the muscles of support should be doing when he's hissing (or moving air out for singing). Every time he hisses he contracts his abs up and in. You can see his belly pushing inwards to make the hiss at 1:03 - 1:05. But this isn't the right thing to do. And I correct him to let him know that the more efficient way of supporting his air as he hisses is to flex those ab muscles and lean outwards on them to create the hiss instead of snapping them in and up. Check out my video here which will help you with a better understanding of what I'm talking about: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKeApZygnrOUhKM.html

So your belly should expand when you make sound? How about inhale, I thought that your belly should expand when you inhale?
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio
@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tuura, thanks for reaching out. When you sing, you ned to use your abdominal muscles to support your diaphragm. To do so, they need to flex gently out and down rather then contract inwards. I do not want you to think of "expanding" your belly because then what you will likely do is push your tummy out which doesn't achieve the same effect as flexing your abs. When you inhale, don't forcibly expand your belly, just let those muscles relax and they will do what they need to do. Instead of focusing on your belly on the inhale, focus on sending your breath into the back ribs - that's where the majority of the mass of your lungs is, that's where the air needs to go. Hope this helps!

You just don't get it yet. She has another video that explains the type of breathing she's talking about.

Lip trills and belly breathing puts the voice in the nose. You can still get positive results from that approach, especially in the style of music the student is singing but there is much more voice there that won't be found in the nose. Nice voice though.

Thanks for your comment. In my experience, there are all kinds of resonance issues (a nasal tone being one of them) that can not be dealt with until breath support is 100% rock solid. With this student, we have to address his support first before we can address any issues of resonance like nasality. The resonance issues are due to still not enough height or stretch in his soft palate - they have nothing to do with lip trills or his breathing. Neither one of those things actually causes a nasal sound, but the shape and space in his soft palate definitely does. The resonance issues and the support issues are separate but related which is why you have to deal with the support first because without it, it doesn't really matter what his soft palate is doing or not doing for a good, open resonance. Make sense?

This sounds quite bad. I can't fully judge just from one sample though. What people don't understand about support is that without relaxation in the head and neck, you can't properly support

Mark, the reason that singers can not relax in the head and neck is BECAUSE they are not properly supporting with their lower muscles of support. Without that lower support, the body comes in to compensate and "support" the sound in other ways.....ie. trying to control the sound with the muscles in the head and neck, which is exactly why they're tense and straining. In my 25yrs of experience, I have yet to see a singer be able to release the muscles of the head/neck/tongue (all the muscles that come in to try to compensate for improper breath support) without learning how to properly support with the muscles that should be doing the job FIRST (lower abs, lower back, pelvic floor etc). For a singer to release the head and neck, they need to be supporting their sound properly in the lower body and know they can trust that. Otherwise they will remain in tension trying to compensate with head and neck for the support that's not otherwise where it should be. So.....with all due respect, what you've said above is backwards. The better way to understand it is that in order to release head and neck, a singer needs to be taught FIRST how to properly support in their lower body. That's the only way they'll be able to release head and neck because that's the only way they will trust the sound will come out WITHOUT head and neck. In the absence of setting up proper support FIRST, they will always feel like the need to use head and neck because they've got no other way of supporting their sound. Make sense?

@@ArdenKaywinVocalStudio people who don't know how to sing or who have never had a lesson with a competent teacher think * oh wow she really knows her stuff. She sure showed this guy! " People who can sing and have studied with a good teacher understand that engaging support comes after obtaining vocal release. In fact, if you have physical release in the upper body and good relaxed posture, you will automatically engage support when you sing ( to some degree). I hope all the virtual ink you spilled brings in the believers. I'm sorry I stopped in.
