Opus Dei (2002) - An insightful investigation into the controversial Opus Dei sect, founded by a priest of the Franco regime and now extending its influence across the world.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzfaq.info_c...
In the shadow of the Pyrenees lies the shrine of Torreciudad, the heart of the Opus Dei movement. Founded in 1928 by Jose María Escriva, the sect now has 85,000 members worldwide. The movement promotes an austere lifestyle and outmoded religious practices, such as self-flagellation. Many accuse it of operating a mind-controlling, secretive cult, using its network of schools and universities to target the young and impressionable. Escriva’s hardline views on issues such as abortion, contraception and homosexuality also helped him to forge close links with the Franco regime; something that many feel should automatically disqualify him from sainthood. But so long as the sizeable donations keep flooding in and the movement’s leaders hold influential positions in the Vatican, Opus Dei will continue to enjoy the Church’s blessing.

I was a numerary member of Opus Dei for almost ten years. This is so bad that it doesn't even need refutation. Their main detractor is an unfaithful numerary who slept with prostitutes while having the world believe that he was a faithful celibate member of Opus Dei! Really? A self-admitted hypocrite! That's the best you can do? This kind of saddens me, as I have great appreciation for the Work of God, and attributed all the attacks to the devil's work. But this attack is so unintelligent and self defeating that, if there's any diabolical involvement in it, it must be by some very low level rookie demon; a bad sign that Satan doesn't consider it such a big threat any more...

No counter evidence. No impartial judge. You only hear the prosecution.

@Pat M so you think sin is fake concept, and people in healthy world should not repent for their evil? I wonder how soon earth would become a real hell without repentance. And you think christian teachings about human's inner evil isn't real? People aren't deep down hypocrites and self-seekers to you? For your information, knowing your own imperfectness in christianity does NOT mean any fear, but hope, because of faith God created you the way he loved you, and he knows about your fails and can help you to overcome it, so you have hope to become a better person. And definitely not through church and priests, but through your personal prayers. Church is helpful with it, but not a healer. Point of our religion is way deeper than it could be some political construct, as all of you persume. Unfortunately, you atheists know least about it, when you never experienced what is meant by words like "being in inner unity with God". Of course you shout like children it's a made-up fake, when you neved tasted it. But that doesn't make you true, just uncompetent to make statements :) Oh and please, give me a reason to think Bible is fictional. I'm really curious

I come from an Opus Dei family where many members venerate Jose Maria Escriva. They are supernumeraries that are total fanatic Catholics. They are totally obcessed with "La Obra." They constantly are praying the rosary, kissing likenesses of Jesus, sleeping on the floor. They tell me, not that I am bound for Hell. But already burning! The whip their backs "disciplines." They wear "celices" on their thighs a couple of hours a day that have unbarbed fish fish hooks that are driven into their flesh. My mother was hospitalized twice that I know of with infections. These people are not neurotic. They are borderline or full on psychotics. They give large amounts of money to their HQ in NYC. They are as demented as ISIS, but to my knowledge are not yet terrorists. I attended Catholic Schools from K to 12. I had a scholarship for University for academics. I was sad as a youth, sad for my family. They insisted that I follow a vocation. Upon graduating from HS I joined the military and stayed for 20 years. I finished college in the military and went to a professional school upon retirement. Opus Dei ruined my family and mentally crippled and destroyed many members of it. They are a very sick, sadomasochistic cult. Nobody should ever trust them. They are hurting the Catholic Church. There is nothing good about this evil cult. They are dangerous and an insult to Jesus Christ and the Holy Mother.

That´s so true. And I wonder why, instead of hurting their bodies (aka their temples as they say), don´t they do something as sacrificing and is also productive like Jesus would do? If you´re gonna wake up at 5 am to take a freezing shower why not go feed the homeless instead so your sacrifice is not a waste? I don´t have a close Opus Dei member anymore but did you ever ask them this? All they do is selfish bullshit.
@kacp6485

I'm so sorry for this, but in this case, your family directly violated teachings of Opus Dei. Usually when someone criticises Opus dei, they only think that all members of it act as bad as the few they personally met. (Which is not true, for example for me, Opus dei is God's gift of group of holy catholif friends which do always the best they could. All memebers are different, so all couldn't be good neither bad) But you are wrong even more, you consider some things as an official cult of Opus dei, though they are not! I have no idea where to start with all the wrong things you wrote Your parents have no right to call you to any vocation, you should choose it, from what God is telling you. They have no information about his plan for you, so they cannot force you into anything, this is the first and worst thing about violating of Opus Dei rules i noticed. Opus Dei isn't about forcing into anything, so anyone who force, makes a mistake aganst it. So that's for the start Secondly, it's absolutely wrong to take masochistic type of fasting as an obligation of spiritual life! Real physical hazing are mostly just for the specific chosen mystics, with even things like stigmates or something... There are some few people, God is calling them for, but it's no way of necessity! For most of us, who are not literal mystics of chosen, applies a permanent rule that our body and our health is holy gift from God, and we should take good care of it, and protect it. (Also my Opus Dei friends are supporting me with better healthier lifestyle, for being better person without anxiety from health problems) They also have no right to tell you you're bound of hell, they shoul love you amd care for you as a parents in teaching of Opus Dei. It's not a neccesity to kiss any pictures or anything, or pray all the time Real Opus Dei is about living our faith even outside a church, in everyday life, sanctify our work and fight to become a saint right in the ordinar life where God sent us. It's exactly about the point that we are all allowed to be saint, that it's not just for some mystics or priests or chosens, but for all, and we don't need great hollywood scenes and epic miracles to live side by side with God everyday. And it also delegates to sanctify with love basic family life. It is absolutely great cult for catholic church, and it's blessed by Jesus and his Mother! (And one more thing, in basic life of Opus dei we're learning about the thing "self-mortification" but that doesn't have to do anything with physical self-harm, it's just about, harmless and invisible to everyone except God, withholding of something you hugely want int that mometn, sacrificing something ordinar and little to God. And it's layed only in basic word "no", the chocolate will wait these 10 minutes or something. And once i experienced it, i loved it, when i founf strenght in God to say "no" to my loud appentences, which ruled over me all the time, suddenly i became the leaded and i had the rule over my appentences! I've never felt pure freedom like this, i felt so strong and dignified thanks to it, i couldn't even imagine! I have no idea why someone distort this beautiful thing to something sinful and terrible, though in its keystone is so holy, about breaking chains of appentence and becoming a leader of your decisions!) The thing you persume as a real cult of Opus Dei is wrong, it's out of point, it's missed from it's inner sense. Don't judge it all just according to group of extremists you know, you're missing a lot But once again, i'm so sorry you had to get through this experience, i hope you live happier now!

@@kacp6485 Thank you most kindly for your thoughtful comments to me. My comments about those family members that are Opus Dei are not lies. Whether, or not what they do, have done, might do is or is not Opus Dei doctrine is not important aside from the fact that I had to grow up humiliated and terrorized by what I was forced to believe was all of this Opus Dei bullshit. I am a member of a support group of refugees that are Opus Dei Survivors. I help my fellow members recognize their feelings and put them to rest and just thank God that they escaped from this evil Opus Dei diabolical cult. I know people like you quite well. What else can you say to me or another survivor like me, except to blame us? I know all about Jose Maria Escriva and what a cultist deranged motherfucker he was. Jesus Christ would be most certainly punishing his evil ass for sullying his holy name. Only, the Catholic Church would be so evil as to venerate a syphilis chancre upon the face of Christianity like that evil shit bag Escriva. Catholic vocations or any choice of a job should come from within. That I agree with you. It was decided by my family that I should be a priest. It was not my desire to be a priest. In order to escape from my family I joined the Army and stayed for 22 years retiring as SGM. After retirement I went to professional school. I spend my life helping people that are victims of cults. Sorry, but Opus Dei is one of the most reviled and evil cults both to academicians and to the victims of Opus Dei. My patients view me as helping them escape with their sanity and possibly preventing them from committing suicide as a means of escaping their Opus Dei families. Sadly, some have been ruined by this ungodly evil cult. Make no mistake, I thank God every day that I was fortunate enough to escape Opus Dei. I had a sibling that was not as fortunate and committed suicide to escape the depravity of Opus Dei. I have a relative that escaped Opus Dei but requires intensive psychiatric support and psychotropic medications. You have no choice but to condemn survivors like me in order to be an apologist for this most evil Catholic prelate. As for me? I am not a Catholic anymore and do not embrace Christianity in any form. All I can say to you......is simply continue to tell your lies about what Opus Dei is to validate your feelings. You really don't have any choice because if you displease your Opus Dei cult.....cult leadership and cult leaders can sanction you, put a choice on both of your thighs and "apply the discipline to your ass.......or even go so far as to really fuck you up? So stay in your perverted, cynical, evil Opus Dei world knowing more and more in your heart and mind that you are living the Opus Dei cruel cynical lie. V/r, J. B. Not the most sympathetic portrayal of Opus Dei founder, san Josemaria Escriva. I doubt the glib Australian presenter, or any of his researchers, have actually read any of his writing. In fact I would suggest that this is a political attack based on local politics in Australia, and has nothing to do with the heart of san Josemaria Escriva's teachings.

Opus dei was lied to, opus dei lied to and manipulated its members....but when life gives you lemons, you turn those lemons into weapons against the police state. But anyways, I can probably do some Jesusy ass shit if people are down for it. I'm the "rich people eye of a needle" kind of Jesus, not the "make me rich you peasants" kind of Jesus. I mean I'm not Jesus...but it's a hat I can wear I care less about being Jesus, and a whole lot more about ending the police stste, ending hunger, and solving climate change, which kinda seem like the things that Jesus cared about. However this has taken a connotation that was never meant. Render your hearts! Not your garments! A meek and contrite heart O God you will not spurn. Thanks to the victory of our Lord who descended not only to earth but to the depths of hades for our sake. Imagine Spain with an Orthodox Church? What a sight that would be. There's much to be said for the Iconography and Theology of Orthodoxy. Oh and Jesus is the Immaculate Conception. If Mary was why would we need a savior? Her whole lineage would've had to be sinless. Also Infallibility came after the incorrect dogma of the I.Conception. so?

A saint is a christian-one who loves and obeys Jesus Christ and only Jesus Christ grants sainthood not some heretical pedophile preist whos every religious practice is an abomination to God and is conedemned in the bible they say their church gets their religion from. The institution of the Roman Catholic church does not produce saints nor does it have the power to make someone become a saint, a saint isnt a necklace or someone you pray to they are simply the dead and living righteous souls covered by the blood of Christ that will inherit the kingdom of God. Dead people cant hear you only dempons and angels thats why we are commanded to pray to the Father through Christ inspired by the HolySpirit not to dead people. Saint means holy, set apart from the world for the use of God, all real christians that know love and obey Christ are saints.

This is definitely not true. More of half truths. Opus Dei has helped me grow spiritually as a lay Catholic. Parish priests are sometimes very busy and have no time for formation for Catholics who want to learn more about their faith. This is why the personal prelature helps. I highly recommend it. And if anyone feels mortification is equivalent to self flagellation, they need to understand that it’s just little things like skipping a meal, chocolate or forcing yourself to finish that unpleasant job. In my opinion likening Opus Dei to ISIS is disingenuous and outrageous. No Opus Dei member would become a suicide bomber.

Nothing spiritual about the tough physical work of the grape harvest? Physical labor has long been the second edge of the sword of spiritual struggle in Christianity, the first being prayer. Work is a centerpiece of opus dei thought. After all, man was made to work. It's in the Bible After all (really tho, some drunk martian refugee made man to work for him. It wasn't anything special, it was just slave labor. No need to throw some grand spiritual purpose into it). I've been a slave. I've worked for minimum wage, I was enlisted in the military, I was an unpaid intern...I've been a slave. There is no virtue to be found in work for the sake of work. However, there is virtue to be found in things that make you good at work. The opus dei rhetoric used to justify the importance of work has to do with the importance of excellence. There absolutely is virtue to be found in excellence. But virtue in work for the sake of it? I have found none. Excellence is important, excellence is virtuous, and I firmly believe that everyone is excellent at something....I just don't think that something is always something that can be turned into money. And that's the problem with work. Sex work is work, and that's not a blessing for sex work, it is an indictment of work for the sake of work. I don't think work is inherently virtuous...but determination, resolve, endurance, excellence? Those things absolutely are virtuous. But you don't have to work to embody those things. Me? I was at my happiest when I was a garbage man. My time card said park ranger, but my job was a garbage man...and I enjoyed it. Idk, it was a space that was shared by community, I kept it clean, I kept it safe, and it made people happy. I did find virtue in work, but not because I was working, but because of what my work did. I'm also very lazy. I don't like doing things that don't need to be done. Some would call that efficient, and they would not be wrong, but it still comes from laziness. Idk, the whole work thing in opus dei thought was mostly just brainwashing so you would infiltrate government. You should be pissed about being brainwashed. You should be pissed about being used. You should be pissed about being lied to about how important "work" is...but if you'll work with me (pardon the pun, it was intentional), I think we can build build world that encourages excellence, not obedience, and certainly not work. I am not Jesus, despite what you may have been told. I'm a manufactured messiah, which several religious figures have more or less voted on to confirm as a prophet. I am not christ, but the papacy has deemed me as such. I am not a prophet, but both sunni and Shia leaders have agreed that I am. Hell, I'm a libertarian but commies are 70% of my fan base. I'm even pretty popular with satanists. Anyways, I'm not Jesus, and you were deceived to achieve an end. It is a good end though. If you will accept my apology, and accept that I am not a messiah, will you let THIS drunk martian build something that is pretty cool? I've got another maetian and a human 2.0 to help me out, so our odds of success are pretty high. There's one more martian floating around, but his duty is to be the first martian trained by Martians, so he's gonna like....do a whole other thing. It's not important now. It will probably only be important for Martians, which will be important for the planet, but I digress. Anyways you were lied to, but if I can make use of your positions, I can do some jesusy ass shit. I need your Cooperation tho.

Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. In this world, the great fertility of atheism can be explained by the fact that there is no main opponent of critics of the Bible - the Church. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist. Find *"The Mystery about the Church of Christ"* video on KZfaq, which shows the real causes of Christian sects and atheism. The video reveals a prophecy about the disappearance and reappearance of the Church of Christ before the end of the world. Watching this video will bring joy to all who sincerely seek God and will interest those who are not too lazy to think freely. (The video is in Russian, but English subtitles are included)

@@jonathannixon8652 You write: *"Jesus said I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."* - As for the words "I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." they do not mean that Christ's church was not to die. This is a misinterpretation of Jesus' words. Jesus also died when He was crucified, but that doesn't mean death overcame Him, does it? Of course not, because Christ rose from the dead and thereby conquered death. As it is written: *"Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it"* (Acts 2:24). This is what happened to the Church. The gates of hell are death, and hell is a dwelling place for the dead. So the words *"I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it"* indicate that the Church was to die, go to hell, and then rise again as Christ did. After all, one can only defeat death (escape from the gates of hell that hold the dead) by dying and rising again and in no other way. Just as Christ could not be defeated by the gates of hell and was resurrected on the third day, so the Church will be resurrected, but it will happen before the End of the World. Just the death and resurrection of the Church reveals the great mystery of Christ and the Church, which the Apostle Paul speaks of when he draws an interesting parallel between the relationship between husband and wife and Christ and the Church. *“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church"* (Ephesians 5:31-32). The true essence of the integrity of Christ and the Church is that Jesus and the Church were to live the same life as husband and wife according to the *"two are one flesh".* And if they crucified Christ, they later crucified His Church. It could not have been expected otherwise. The world could not be cruel to Christ and benevolent to the Church, for the principle of integrity two are one flesh would be violated. But the most important and joyful thing is that the Church is one with Christ both in persecution, suffering, and death and in resurrection. As Jesus was crucified and on the third day risen, so will happen to the Church. *"This is a great mystery..."* is revealed in a true understanding of the principle *"two are one flesh,"* which means that the Church as Christ had to go from Calvary to the Resurrection.

@@jonathannixon8652 You write: *"The church has existed since Pentecost. The true church of Christ are the ones Who believe in the name of Jesus Christ repented of their sins and put there full trust in the lord Jesus Christ And actually follow the lord Jesus Christ and his commandments To do the will of his father which is in heaven And there have always been True bible believe in Christians as there was since the days of Pentecost."* - What can we know about the Church of Christ? What was she like? We know about the Church of Christ only what is known from the books of the New Testament. We do not know of any other Church of Christ outside the New Testament. What was the Church of Christ in the books of the New Testament? Certainly not symbolic and not invisible, but a strictly hierarchical organization consisting of believers baptized with the Holy Spirit, where the Gifts of the Holy Spirit were manifested. As written: *"Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues"* (1 Corinthians 12:27-28). This was the Church of Christ in the first century, but for 2000 years we no longer see such a Church of Christ, there are no Apostles, no prophets, no one has miraculous powers and gifts of healing. But we see gatherings of people headed only by teachers speaking in the name of Christ, but not having the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said: *"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.* *So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following..."* (Mark 16:15-20). I would like to draw your attention to these words: "the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following". that is, miracles reinforce the word of God and they are important for the preaching of the teachings of Jesus. For 2000 years, including our time, we have not seen any believers who have accompanied or are accompanying these signs. But in the books of the New Testament we read that in the first century, believers performed many miracles. As written: *“And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people”* (Acts 6:8). *“Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them”* (Acts 15:12). *"Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city"* (Acts 8:5-8). Where are Stephanes, Barnabas, Pauls in our time? Where is Philip, who brings great joy to the cities? In which church do the blind gain sight? Where are the lame and bedridden jumping for the joy of being healed? Where are demons cast out? Where are the dead raised? Where are the Prophets? Where do they lay hands on the sick and get rid of sickness? Such miracles are not performed in any church, anywhere in the world. Jesus said: *“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”* (John 14:12). But where are these believers now doing the works of Jesus and even more than Jesus himself did? The Church of Christ was destroyed in the first century and for 2000 years false churches appear that claim to be the Church of Christ but do not have the testimony of God, that is, miracles. It was by miracles that God testified about the Church of Christ, just as he testified about Jesus. As written: *“Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:”* (Acts 2:22). God testified about Jesus, and then about the Church of Christ by miracles. But the Church of Christ was destroyed in the same way as Christ was killed in due time, and therefore the signs and wonders that accompanied the Church ceased, and now She has been buried for 2000 years, but will rise in the last days as Jesus rose again. The prophecy of the death and resurrection of the Church is present in the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). "Revelation" also prophesies about the emergence of the Church: *“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:”* (Revelation 12:1). The emergence of the Church will just be a great sign of the imminent Coming of Christ.

@@edvardzv5660 Regarding your question about why we do not see miracles today, or the gifts of the Spirit, those gifts were for the Apostolic age only. It says in an Old Testament prophecy, "I will show them wonders, according to the days of Egypt". The "days of Egypt" were a 40 year Exodus. The start of the miracles in the New Testament started with the ministry of Christ in 30 AD. There then followed a 40 year Exodus when a righteous remnant of believers were coming out of the Old Covenant age of Israel and into the New Covenant age of the Church. This 40 years was the Apostolic age of miracles and gifts of the Spirit, and they ceased in 70 AD when apostate Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed. The miracles and gifts of the Spirit were for that 1st century apostolic age only, from 30 AD (Christ's ministry) to 70 AD (destruction of temple and the end of the Old Covenant age). The signs and wonders (miracles) were a sign that the Old Covenant age was coming to an end. The miracles were not intended for the New Covenant age. They were only for the Apostolic age in the 1st century.

All religion is a relic of the past which humanity should have outgrown by now. I know that it can be a force for good but is just as often a force which creates suffering and pain. Morality yes, reverence for life and the planet we live on, yes, but as one humanity we should be past the stage of fanaticism and belief on pure faith because to believe on faith is to believe without evidence or logic and if I believe without evidence in any other area of life I would be mocked for it and rightly so.

steve you’re brainwashed dude. You just repeated a bunch of talking points we’ve all seen a thousand times. Take all your bs away and look at society. Sure we have technology but take that away and look at people. Look at society. People are sick, dude. Society is sick. So you’re bashing religion but to anyone with eyes, religious or not, you can pretty clearly see that, as the world has gotten less religion, society has progressively gotten more and more sick. And if you can’t see that, I don’t even know what to tell you.
