Thank you very much Stefano for posting this wonderful serenade from aclaimed and famous cellist and composer Victor Herbert. Naturalized American in 1902 ca. The story of Victor's orign is a little bit uncertain, but recently it's been determined tha he was born in the Island of Guernsey at the northwest coast fo France, and then baptized on the Lutheran church in Baden Germany. at the age of 2 her mother divorced and went to live to Kent, England, and when he was 8 her mother remarried and joined her in Stuttgart, Germany where he started years later his musical carrer, and compose among other pieces this romantic serenade in 1884. perhaps because he was so inspired by the love he felt for is future wife Therese Förster. this great piece is one of the must delicate of his works, so well finished and we can feel the influence of Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak, by the way they bouth compose their outstanding string serenades some years later Herbert compose this beauty. Thank you again Sefano grazie mille signore!!!!!

The only stories of Herbert's origins I ever encountered were in his two published biographies. Wherever did you get this information from?

@@jamessheridan4306 The info comes from Wikipedia, which has footnotes with references. Having a child with a man you were not married to would have been quite scandalous in Victorian Britain, and was used against his mother in the divorce proceeding that ensued. I'm going to go all Jessica Fletcher, and come to the conclusion that his father, August Herbert, who Wikipedia says nothing is known about, was probably a German. Why else would everyone go to Freiburg im Breisgau for the baptism, wth the actual father present. His mother seems to have liked Germans, since she subsequently married another German and everyone moved to Stuttgart.

@@AML2000 Nevertheless, all of this new biographical info about Herbert is quite mind blowing to me! I mean, you think you know a guy... Also; whoever his father was there is no question in my mind about his Irishness considering the undoubted ethnic origins of both Mother and maternal Grandfather.

Cute piece! Love all the rubato and the little string things like sliding up to the A harmonic in the 4th movement. The way they play so lightly in the more capricious moments, I can feel it in my hands. Really makes me miss when I played in a string orchestra. Thank you for uploading!

It's not a masterpiece, but it's cleverly written.

Somehow reminds me of Tchaikovsky! Herbert may well be the American equivalent of him.

As I've noticed, the description still contains Beliczay's name.
