Lies, Kane came out in 1986 and Rakim paid in full in 1987. They were already moving away from simple ABC lines by then and evolving Hip hop. People would have messed with the song back then for sure but this was already going out the window by then. Nas popped up on the scene in 1992, that's 5 years after Rakim. It didn't take long to move up the scale for rap. Yall be forgetting how quick it progressed. Mel's rap was industry relevant from 1975-1980-ish, the ISH being debatable if it was the standard anymore, not that people wouldn't have liked it. The Standard of Rap became something like Summer Time by Will Smith in 1991 pretty much which was a year before Nas popped up. Standard of rap, meaning, no longer sounding ABC 123, more smooth and fleshed out. The standard of Lyrical rap I believe started when rappers like Big Pun, Canibus and such were on the scene in mid 90's, which is what Jay-Z and Nas and many other pioneered, and Em came on the scene during that time. That's why when everybody think of the Golden era of rap it's 1000% always the 90's. They may pay homage to the older rappers but that's just out of respect, we all know the real era of rap and it's standard was the 90's. And Battle Rap really shows the pinnacle of what lyrical listeners want to hear if you trying to diss somebody, and that really started around 2002, not too long after the Golden era of rap, where people only respected lyricism if you going at somebody. So 1985 to 2002 is what? 17 years and we already waaaay beyond Melle Mel, that's not that long. So he had since 1980's till now to feel out the rap scene and know he's not up to par and evolve, yet he did not. People would have said this was wack if this was a diss to somebody who responded back then that was better than Mel and you can pick your choice of rapper in the 80's.
