Orange & Lemons | Clem Castro Being Totally Honest about Pinoy Ako | The Story Behind the Hit | OG
There's always that one song the band hates. Especially when that song was born out of popular demand and does not resonate with the band. Orange & Lemons' frontman Clem Castro gives us a genuine and straightforward POV as he FINALLY opens up about Pinoy Ako. Listen in and take the hints as to why he never liked the song.
In this interview Clem talks about:
• The story behind this official theme song of Pinoy Big Brother
• Almost regretting doing the song
• The stressful process of delivering the song
• The band and their fame
• How the song made them and broke them
• The controversy they faced because of the song
• Why he makes music and his hopes and dreams for his kind of sound
Spotify profile:
Orange & Lemons is a Filipino indie pop/alternative rock band formed in 1999 by singer-songwriter/guitarist Clem Castro along with drummer Ace Del Mundo and his brother JM del Mundo on bass. Former member, Mcoy Fundales served as the second vocalist since its formation until its last reception in 2007. The group's musical genre's been a mix of alternative rock, indie pop and experimental music and heavily influenced by several well-respected bands in different generations like The Smiths, The Beatles and the Eraserheads.
The band had released three several albums and gained commercial success with their sophomore album Strike Whilst the Iron Is Hot released in 2005, reaching double platinum status. Their last album Moonlane Gardens was hailed Album of the Year in the 2007 NU Rock Awards.
The group parted ways in 2007 due to musical differences. Following the band's break up several members formed their own groups. Mcoy Fundales formed Kenyo alongside JM and Ace del Mundo. While Clementine formed his own indie group The Camerawalls and later on released a solo album under the name Dragonfly Collector.
In July 2017 after 10 years on hiatus, the band announced a reformation as a trio and released the single Lovers Go, Lovers Come in December 2017. To commemorate the 15th Anniversary of their debut album, O&L released a 2018 Updated Version of their debut album Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes & Dirty Ice Cream (15th Anniversary Edition) on June 8, 2018.

Pati time signature.

Ian Broudie, the dude who wrote Chandeliers, is very proprietary of his songs. Took a long while before he allowed the songs he wrote for other artists to get onto streaming platforms. His ex bandmate from The Care, Paul Simpson, isn't even allowed to sing live some of the band's songs. This local band is lucky that this shenanigan flew under Broudie's radar.

Pauleygambino7832 With a name like Orange and Lemons, you know theyre going to plagiarize something. There's another much senior group that goes by the name of Oranges & Lemons (Japanese duo). Like he said, remove a note and it's instantly original. In this case, remove a letter and it's a new band name.

I listened to OnL way back 2017 when I was reminiscing their classic hits and I can attest to Clem's claim. This band is beyond Pinoy Ako and their other hits. May soul yung music nila if you give it a go and became my go-to music whenever I go on long travels or long traffics haha. Sadly, plagiarized or not, Pinoy Ako undermined their good music. People are quick to latch on to 1 mistake rather than 1000 good deeds. One fact about musicians is that they listen to A LOT of music to influence theirs. They subconsciously create melodies similar to bands which they were listening to. Madalas mangyari to, that's why you often hear bands being influenced by another and have similar genres of music. May mga cases din where bands were sued for plagiarism pero when you go deeper in the music structure, magkaibang-magkaiba. Also great video! Mabuhay Clem and OnL with their new music!

Yeah I mean ok, it happened years ago but when it happens more than once there's a problem. Another OAL song titled The Beginning of something is very similar to House martins- happy hour. Sampling like what triphop bands do is they use the "exact" record then they play with it from fast tempo to slow, layer of beats etc. In this case the melody was plagiarized and not once. I know that Clem is a big fan of this kind music and artist like Ian Broudie, Morrissey etc and so am I that's why it's a bit off with this issue. I know that he can make better and original melodies just like the other songs, and from time to time I still listen to OAL and Camera walls. Still power on Clem.

I appreciate Orange and Lemons' musicality, but I am definitely sure "Pinoy Ako" issue is not just a matter of sampling as Clem Castro would claim. Yes, notes may be different, may even be in a different key, but you can't ignore the melody. It's taking the entire song, tweaking some notes here and there (because it's in Filipino lyrics) but the overall feel is the same. Definitely, not sampling. But good for you, there weren't any massive lawsuits or something.

This has the same case with the verb bitter sweet symphony sampling a rolling stones song. in sampling you steal need to clear out the recording company and legal rights to it. Also sampling is like remixing and incorporating a part of an exisiting song to your own song. Maybe it's an interpolation like when the 1975 has a blatant song that sounded like joy division's disorder but pitched up. Different melody but same backbone. He's arguments is like The ice ice baby bass part is not from Queens under pressure due to the way the riff is plyed but still a same chord. Still love listening to orange and lemons and will forever be part of may nostalgia.

"Sampling" is the method of taking a piece of a song, getting the original artist's permission, giving them credit and paying them for royalties. He probably thought: No one knows about an old song from a disbanded group from the UK in the early 80s. Let's plagiarize it.

Still, remarkably, "Pinoy Ako" was popular way back then and widely known even till now.. And it has a 5 versions and the latest was Rico blancos' version..Despite Pinoy ako controversy.. The song was like a love and hate relationship.. While you loving it, you criticize it.. It has a bitter-sweet taste history.. But foremost the song was an anthem that people love, adore, sing, jive to dance and sometimes criticized, despite the odds still keeps running and playing on your tunes and airwaves. Good or bad its the music the bring us one..it will last a lifetime. And about sir clem u r good,great and genius.. Ur mysticallity of creating songs were superb. It would have been ok if they admitted to plagiarizing because of time pressure to produce the song. Especially that ABS-CBN is a big company and PBB was a big show. But to say that it was original and had only "little" similarities is BS. He goes on to say that the intro is different because of one note and let's say that was a coincidence. But how do you explain the melody of the verse? The rhythm? the drum pattern? There are so many similarities to say it was just a coincidence. Here is the original song. Mcoy Fundales may be the voice but Clem Castro was behind for most of the songs. Parang mas madaling kumanta kaysa gumawa at mag-isip ng kanta. Are you familiar with The Camerawalls and The Dragonfly Collector and heard their songs? As for the intro of the entire melody comparable to Care’s “Chandeliers”, normal lang ‘yan sa music at selective process yan. It may be familiar to those who already have heard “Chandeliers” pero sa majority na hindi pa naririnig ito, hindi pa tama? Try listening to the intro of Switchfoot’s “Dark Horses”; it is comparable to Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away” 👌 Nagkaroon ba ng issue sa end ni Lenny Kravitz? Dyan kasi pumapasok yung musical style and influences sa paggawa ng melody, pogi.

Yo hands down Orange and Lemons' songs are spectacular. My college days were memorable because of your songs. I think there's nothing wrong with that if legally done. In business there's 'benchmarking", sa youtube gayahan ng content, sa school kopyahan ng ideas, sa automotive kopyahan ng features and designs. I'm just saying. But I'm still a fan of OnL forever na yan in my heart and mind.

Lucky you. The Care or their songs' copyright owners had been aggressive, you would probably be with same fate as George Harrison was when he was sued and adjudged to have "subconsciously plagiarized" another song from the Chiffons.

It's a commercial jingle for some tv show so to me, it's not really reflective of their band's catalog. I wasn't even surprised to know that it took a lot of inspiration from other songs because most show theme songs from ABS do too. Unfortunately, it got too big because 'masa' ate that song up thinking it was a 'real' song from that band. They sampled the song. Hiphop's been doing that forever. The publisher of the sampled song didn't even care to sue. People should just get over it.

I think its like the intro of " Ice ice baby" by vanilla Ice and "Under Pressure " by Queen, kinda similar. The song got really big it becomes almost a ffight song for the new generation of Pinoys. Sadly it turns out to be too similar (the intro, progression, verse etc.) And being accused of plagiarism. I still liked the song though. I hope the O L band will make a equally popular If not more popular " pinoy fight song'" in the very near future. Good Luck to Orange Lemon Band.

there are so many filipino songs that was tagalized from original songs from other countries or even not as directly translated like parokya ni edgar's "Ordertaker", which they called a chopsuey parody mash up, they arent calleod out for plagiarism. They still sold it as their own work though. And if it's really a big deal, why does pbb still use it? it's actually played for too long

Okay if ever it was "copied" as some haters are saying in this comment. And even "Your Song" from the same band, alam ko taga La Salle Lipa ang original composer nun. May legal suit ba na humabol sa kanila the fact na local-local yan? The level of hypocrisy lang ng mga tao. PNE's version of "Harana" is different from Eric Yaptangco? Still the same banana. You copied the song, except it was the lyrics this time.

Pero kung tama pagkakatanda ko, when Mcoy joined PBB celebrity edition (wala ng Orange & Lemons nun, Kenyo na yung banda nila) he was claiming ata na sya ang gumawa ng Pinoy Ako... parang sabi niya kay Big Brother "Dahil ba to sa kantang ginawa ko?" Somethinv like that... not quite sure... kaya nagtaka ako kasi alam ko si Clem naman talaga halos ang in-chargee sa mga kanta ng Orange & Lemons

maybe sampling, maybe 3 notes vs 4 notes, but that argument went nowhere for Vanilla Ice when he was threatened with lawsuits by John Deacon and Queen for Ice Ice Baby vs Under Pressure. Had Ian Broudlie threatened a lawsuit, I'm sure Clem and OnL wouldve folded easily.

I feel for you man. Like he said. It is “Sampling”. It’s a different narrative as plagarism. Our country back in the days was not immerse yet in the art of sampling. Or to put it into a perspective, “inspiration” just to interpret it closer to most of the people’s understanding. Take note, even this was already a thing since early 80’s as I can recount. And popularize from the golden age of hiphop. And if we talk about that era, I could say na mas close to plagiarism pa nga yung mga sikat na kanta ng karamihan not to mention the song but the artist sang by hadji, regine, rico j, and even parokya, etc.. No disrespect to those artist just giving an example. It’s not their fault that they took a song from other countries and put tagalog lyrics on it and add some elements to make it a pop song. At one point they were required to produce a song that is pop enough to feed the masses. People needs to understand that it’s the Company’s call who’s doing all of this.

Ex. Banyo queen by Andrew E.
@joefortz2856
@joefortz2856 2 жыл бұрын
@@martx4290 See… You are already a part of it bro. banyo queen is under Viva. Viva ent. Is a big record company. Doing a sample clearance is not an issue to them. So this is not plagarism coz they cleared the sample. The issue with O&L has something to do with that “inspiration” that was exaggerated by people who don’t know a thing about a musician getting “inspiration” coming from other music. Are you sure your favorite artist doesn’t took inspiration from other music? Are you sure Ely buendie didn’t took an inspiration from other music and used it to one of his songs. The idea is some songs may sound a like because they are using the same chord progression. Coming na rin sa lead man ng orange and lemon, he just took a lil’ inspiration and work his own material there. Minadali pa sila and lastly he didn’t know it will blow up sa pinas ng ganun kasikat. Kaya nga noong may nagmamarunong na “plagiarism” daw then afterwards ni hindi naman naghabol ung mismong banda na pinagkuhanan nya and ung record label shows they understand how this creative thing works. In the subject of talk about Andrew E., then I think the most close to plagarism is “Humanap ka ng panget”. It was a straight rip off ng kantang “Find an ugly woman” by Cash Money and marvelous. From concept, halos ung buong lyrics, at ung flow. See.. part of that majority who don’t know about “sampling” or from the perspective of an artist, “inspiration”
