I think youre forgetting humans are also omnivorous guns waiting to go off (both figuratively and literally ever since the 1300s) and obviously not all humans are bad but not all chimpanzees are either they just also sometimes go to war with other clans and are quite defensive (and there isnt a single year of recorded human history where there wasnt war between ourselves at least at the same local level if not larger scale)

I wonder if orangutans actually stayed closer to the niche that our last great ape common ancestor lived in. I imagine being a tree climber like a gibbon leads to a body plan oddly suited to bipedal walking. So my take is the last common ancestor went from brachiating to walking, and orangutans stayed in the trees, and then a long time later, knuckle walkers came from this creature closer to bipedal motion. It's a minority opinion, but some biologists do believe knuckle walking evolved twice independently and bipedal walking came first (after all, gibbons are bipedal when not in the trees).

Naturally in the wild they are NOT “extremely social creatures that like to be around other Orangutans” They are very solitary creatures especially the males. They rarely come together other than to mate. At times females might be seen together feeding and the children might play but that’s the exception. Typically they are alone and do not do much socializing. The mother child bond is very strong and they stay together for quite a long time but once they are adults they typically go off and find their own range. Now orangutans raised in captivity have shown to be a different story. They have been found to form lasting social bonds with each other when brought up together especially orphans. What you see on TV and the internet are mostly from captive situations not nature.

Something I find strange is that humans got our start on intelligence by eating meat and being social, the same goes for chimps, but orangutans are more solitary and herbivorous. How are they able to be so intelligent when their body has to take the extra time and energy wrestling smaller amounts of nutrients out of tough vegetation, as opposed to eating meat?

I suspect that they have used tools for a very long time, possibly thousands of years. I remember when the use of tools by chimpanzees was first "discovered". It was considered unique in the animal kingdom. It has now been recognised that many animal species are tool users. For example crows, elephants, octopuses, dolphins and even ants have all been seen to use tools. The tool use by animals is not new but the human ability to notice it has grown significantly.
@wolfie819

I believe humans coexisting with apes is the reason their learning patterns are accelerating. Test said, and to reiterate the previous comments, they are yet to discover fire in order to cross an evolutionary milestone. Also, I think that would be extremely far fetched with us at the top of the food chain. They won't evolve unless humans disappear. And even then they might not stand up right, loose their hair, develop a voice box, and develop their limbs for manipulation of fine tools. I think this was unique to homosapiens and should teach us that we indeed are responsibile to take care of the other species on the planet.

Huh? Nah. Orangutans are pretty solitary creatures. They can go quite a long time without even seeing another orangutan in the wild, only coming together to mate. They often show aggression when coming across another orangutan. Especially the males. The females are a little bit more tolerant of others but calling them "social" is an extreme stretch. They do not hang out with each other at all in the wild. The only company one will have is with mom and baby. They do not form families, packs, or clans. THEY ARE THE MOST SOLITARY OF THE GREAT APES. They are also extremely arboreal. They would almost never be on the ground. They spend almost all of their lives in trees. They eat, sleep, mate, and raise their young in trees.

Not to be a know it all. orangutans in their natural environment are almost always by themselves. They have a large area that will have only one orangutan in that area unless it’s a mother and child. They do like to be with other orangutans in their current situation tho.

The term 'orang utan' is derived from the Malay words 'orang' meaning human and 'utan' meaning forest. Orangutans include two sub-species, the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Orangutans (or orangutans, another name for mawas) are a type of noble ape with long arms and reddish or brown fur, living in the tropical forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.
