Manchester, boasting a population of 552,000 as per the 2021 census, is strategically situated. It is flanked by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and the neighboring city of Salford to the west. Moreover, Manchester shares its borders with the boroughs of Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, and Salford.
The city's rich history traces back to the Roman era, with the establishment of the civilian settlement associated with the Mamucium or Mancunium fort circa AD 79. From its humble beginnings as a manorial township in the Middle Ages, Manchester underwent remarkable expansion around the turn of the 19th century, spurred by the textile manufacturing boom of the Industrial Revolution. This rapid urbanization propelled Manchester into the annals of history as the world's first industrialized city. Over time, Manchester's territorial boundaries expanded, incorporating areas of Cheshire to the south of the River Mersey, including Wythenshawe in 1931. City status was bestowed upon Manchester in 1853. Notably, the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 transformed the city, establishing the Port of Manchester and providing vital maritime connections to the Irish Sea.
Despite facing challenges such as deindustrialization post-World War II and the IRA bombing in 1996, Manchester experienced significant revitalization efforts, culminating in its role as the host city for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Manchester's significance extends beyond its historical roots; it is renowned for its diverse architecture, vibrant culture, influential musical exports, extensive media presence, groundbreaking scientific and engineering achievements, profound social impact, thriving sports scene, and well-connected transport network. Notable landmarks include the world's oldest surviving inter-city passenger railway station at Manchester Liverpool Road. The University of Manchester stands as a beacon of innovation, where Ernest Rutherford made groundbreaking discoveries in nuclear physics, and where the world's first stored-program computer and graphene were developed.

Like the fact that about 75% off the tall skyscraper are my preferred look, I don't really like the cladding but that's my opinion. I've always wanted to knock who's buying all these sytcrapere up because they aren't exactly cheap

There isn't much architectural maginficence - just a mish-mash of block buildings, its not an attractive city.

Take a walk around the city centre. There is a wealth of impressive architecture most of it dating back to the Victorian period. Modern architecture is generic and lacks soul and imagination. But it is impressive in scale in a city like Manchester.

I think the transformation of Mcr is incredible, but you have to factor in some people are never satisfied, plus there seems to be a lot of jealousy around the city's redevelopment.

I also think some people are oblivious to the costs involved for such buildings, even the basic shaped ones, most English cities do not have them outside of London. For that reason, Manchester's growing skyline is significant and impressive, as is the pace at which it's happening. I'd have thought the big attention grabbing fancy sky scraper projects aren't the ones that get built first anyway because surely those are the ones that are built to stand out in an already crowded skyline?

Go for a walk in Manchester on a sunny day - it’s really nice. Point to note is that Barcelona looks like a shanty town from above - and look how beautiful that is to walk around.
