The reason for the Orc Warboss is the 10ld you can achieve with warband and also the innate reroll charge, that's encouraging a totally different play style to the meta though which is mounted characters

Warband is VERY powerful as @davidoliver3528 has already pointed out. LD 10 and rerolling charges is very powerful! Don't underestimate the power of frenzied orcs.

Good solution for fanatics is to make them less effective against bigger stuff, they should be anti infantry and anti cav etc but they should bounce off bigger things. A rule such as hitting a monster, monstrous infantry/cav and/or chariot results in the fanatic instantly being destroyed and removed from play after inflicting damage, and only being able to remove one monstrous infantry model to represent the mass of the target completely stopping the chain and ball, but also likely dying in the process. Additionally for skirmishers you could inflict d3 hits rather than d6 to represent the ability for the skirmishers to better dodge the fanatic.

Orcs are great! Many people like rocking a second choppa or spears & shields, but I've been using bows & shields with awesome results. At 6 points each, they are extremely point efficient and tactically flexible.

Yeah and Avatars of War has damn great looking Arrer Boyz models to print! I would leave throwing spears and second choppa to savage orcz or big un'z.

With magic weapons I kind of like Da choppiest choppa. Yes it is basically great weapon for 30p more but with no strikes last, lets you use the shield for this sweet 2+ (including troll pants) and have magic attacks so you wyvern Warboss cannot be locked in unwinable combat with something etheral.

@@drdiscostu Weeeeel. Maybe not. Best in O&G book yes. But not in entire game i think. Still I ofent want those points in other magic item. Boss on wyvern giving -2 ld to enemies (-1 from terror -1 from trophy rack) is sweet indeed.

For nice 499 pts of allies you could bring Bray-Shaman lvl 2 with Hagtree Fetish, one random Deamonology or Dark Magic spell and Viletide signature spell, 11 Gors with Truehorn with great weapon and musician, 2 units 5 Chaos Hounds with poisoned attacks and Cygor (as Bray-Shaman count as General of allied continent, 0-1 Cygor is special choice) Shamn goes to Gors who are skirmishing and his main job is to cast Viletide with help of Hagtree Fetish which gives re-roll to wound to Magic Missile spells which Viletide is. 5d6 Str 1 hits with no armour saves, that is lot of dead high armour saver elite units without ward and/or renegetaion. Also Cygor acts as additional big monster like giant, not as good as it in close combat but basicly 12" anti-magic zone plus additional Rock Lobba. Chaos Hounds are excellent chaff units which can also help with Impetious and hurt big scary monsters thanks to poisoned attacks.

the thinking hat isn't as game changing on the wolf riders as you could always put a black orc bsb on chariot and partner with them, that's what i was doing anyways, for the spiders though it's amazing

Main reasons for me to bring Orc Warboss over Black Orc Warboss are pretty much narrative and model. I have just perfect Avatars of War Orc Warboss model, 3D print, which fits me decades of old narratives of orc warboosses. Also in other case I'm also building 2000 pts Savage Orc army, mostly by Avatars of War models, they just are releasing Savage Orc Boarboyz which are so sweet and I try to keep the army as much in the theme. Core of that army is 2 big units of melee orcz with frenzy, one is Big 'Unz with throwing spears and shields, other dual choppaz plus huge unit of Big *un Boarboyz, plus 2 Savage chariots, plus unit of orc arrer boyz, gobboz with short bows, one bolt thrower, Savage orc war boss and BSB on boars, orc wierd nob on fot and ond gobbo oddgit. shamans go to skirmishing ranged units, everything else just moves for Da Kombat, bolt thrower tries to shoot something juicy, gobbo shaman just casts Itchy Nuisance...

as for the question at 10:50: An orc boss is 25pts cheaper, can take frenzy for an additional attack and does not obligate you to a/another black orc unit. They therefore are less restrictive than black orcs as independent torpedo's or unit boosters (notably for savage orcs). They probably work best as secondary combat characters and not as general, as only the first black orc unit _can_ be core, and enthusiasm for a second block of them may be lower during listbuilding. (And, as alluded to, if you don't want to bring black orc boyz at all for some reason or another, you don't have the option to go for the blorc general. But black orc boyz look pretty great and are very good so that won't come up often)

The one thing I think is overlooked with orcs is big uns with warbows as the warbow hits at the S o the model they are S4 ranged hits and S4 hand to hand attacks. I have only played with them a little but really liked them they can both sit and shoot at people and are still good on the charge. If you want you can make them skirmishers as well that can do allot of various things.

Sorry for posting lot of comments, I just love O&G, they have been me favourite army since I started this hobby like almoust 29 years ago... also still big on Oldhammer etc... and little tipsy, as I'm burning of some stress by watching videos about me favourite hobby and army and drinking some cheap cold white wine...

@MountainMiniatures currently my Black Orc Warboss setup is wyvern, great weapon, trollhide trousers and I have been swapping either shield and talisman of protection or ruby ring and enchanted shield. I figure this either makes him really tough or sacrifice some of the durability for a “breath weapon” of sorts to be a mini dragon. It’s been really helpful for being disruptive or mess with my opponents on the turn or turns I either can’t charge or my opponent weasels out of the fight.

Orcs need to get the charge off if you want to win. Goblins are good to push out in front of your army and use them to tie up enemy units before you hit them with your shock units.

Unfortunately you can't have an orc shaman on boar chariot. You can have a goblin shaman on wold chariot though which I've been tempted to try out. Great thing of lvl4 goblin shamans is they don't take away your cap for orc warbosses.

Speaking of random movement: if a unit with RM moves into a enemy unit and as long as they have enough movement, can they freely choose which facing they move into?

Itchy Nuisance is the most influential reason why I bought the core rule book today and I am less likely to play 40K games because I have never truly been a fan of futuristic games, excluding Gorkamorka although I would argue it being futuristic, however I am now waiting to jump into the Old World with an Orc army at long longest last 🎉❤😂

My plan for my savage army is 2 x 10 skirmish goblins with bows to sit infront of my frenzied orcs and use them to either charge redirectors so my orcs dont. If they panic they panic but my orcs wont care if it buys a turn or 2 of protection its worth 40pts.

Goblinz are purely sacrafial,10+ gobboz with short bows decide to charge your opponent, Great, luckily the big orc mob behind can't do that because Impetious... Full win!

So basically you will only scratch your opponents outside of charge. And you can only take one magic item from the same category (trousers and shield are both magic armor).

Designed to be durable. Make the more fighty version if you want. Both items are common. So you can stack.

For Black orcz sometimes hand weapon and shield might be good choice. Just hear me out. If you want to just have extra Borc big boss like on chariot, you could have like small mob of borcz with shields with boss, 5 strong behind your other mobz to stop impetious work and maybe counter ambushers against Beastmen and Skaven? Or like small flank unit of 10 with maybe even full command. Mob of 10 in 2 ranks or mob of 12 in 3 ranks maybe because they are heavy infantry? guarding flank stoppin Impetious while big boss on chariot controls cavarly in other flank or is control of that big 'un boarboy mob in other flank?

I think for lord level characters dont underestimate taking a magic weapon so you dont strike last. Great weapons are great but sometimes you need to hit first to reduce attacks back as we arent the most durable. I8 on the charge means you will get to strike first against most opponents not on the charge (strikes first or some elves withstanding)

As for arachnarok there is some merit to wizard. As you than have 10 wound gobbo wizard with 4+/5++ saves and that can cast in any direction he wishes. But its basically 500+ points so propably not wort it. Silk lobba has one use I could find if you are able to cast evil sun shinin spell for -1AP than its big template can do some work despite wounding mostly on 5s. But again its adding cost to already overcosted unit

I wish impetuous worked how restraining Frenzy worked in previous edition. With units with warband have to re-roll successful restrain leadership tests (i.e if warband units re-roll failed charges they're eager to get in combat!). Then the position of the general would have a bigger influence. Currently it seems to easy to quell impetuous. Then the Black Orc mechanic could then inflict hits to ignore a failed restraint rule.

Love this review. Orcs and Goblins seem more powerful than they’ve ever been! Please do Wood Elves or Tomb Kings next, I’d love to hear your thoughts on them. Can’t wait for the Wood Elves arcane journal!

I feel like base book monsters of O&G are kind of lackluster. Wyvern is ok but ith as you said dragon light. Arachnarok is kind of crap in my experience. Mostly because it is over costed at 310. It is not terrible monster but for this price it does a lot of stuff but none particularly good. If it was say 60-70p cheaper it would be very playable. Gigants are fine but a little too random for me and not that resiliant. I thing troll hag will help tho :)

My theoryhammer BO Warboss on a Wyvern would sport Da Choppiest Choppa, TH Trousers, the 'Eadbuttin''At and a shield. A BO Bigboss BSB on a boar with the Waaagh Banner in a unit of Big Un Boar Boys which has the Banner of Butchery also seems pretty nasty.

Could you put an orc wizard in a skirmishing unit of bowmen... miscasts are unlikely to hurt much, keeps good mobility/vision, and can get the extra casting bonus

I must say giving goblins impeciouocity seems like very unfluffy move. I mean in every solitary source goblins are cowards that will attack only if forced to do so by orcs or if they have some significant advantage (typically very high numbers). Idea they will charge bigger unit of troops or for example that 5 wolf raiders would charge a frigging dragon is just absurd.

Steve - regarding the snotlings. When destroyed, they casue panic tests on orcs. I'm not sure if this is an oversight, but orcs ignore goblins fleeing/dying, but for some reason snotlings dying seem to effect orcs.

Swarms have a special rule in the rule book called "No One Cares" which means they don't cause panic to other units 👍

honestly Steve, i think Blorcs are better with two hand weapons. With Choppa they can blend blocks of infantry with ease, and even give monsters a run for their money because of the sheer number of attacks. Unfortunately i found out blorcs with great weapons will struggle against blocks of infantry and cavalry. 4+ save is not as good as it seems

With WAAAGH!!! benner there is combo with er we go spell givimg boar boyz I bieielieve longest possible charge for heavy cav in the game with 22". Only longer charge in fact I could think of would be same exact combo with wolf raiders and same exact combo for 24" but of course wolf raiders will not do squat in contrast to those guys.

@36:00 I think you’re wrong about lances. The rules says nothing about first round of combat, only about a turn you charge (or count as charging in the case of FBIGO). The fluff text in the FAQ was confusing but doesn’t actually change how lances work.

No lances clearly say in subsequence turns you MUST use you hand weapon. the is only a problem because the faq muddied this a bit and made FBIGO pursuits still count as the same combat. im hoping to get an answer on this asap.

@@MountainMiniatures subsequent turns to a turn you charged, so if you charged (or counted as charging) this turn, then it’s not a subsequent turn.

Re your comment on lances not working after the first round of combat, are you actually playing it like that?.I know the rules can be interpreted in such a way (personally I think it's quite a stretch to claim you can't use a lance after the first round of combat if the enemy FBIGO) doesn't this make knights next to useless against anything that isn't a very small unit of infantry?

Looking at the Lizardmen, Black Orcs look like they may be undercosted (or Saurus/Temple Guard are overcosted). It seems like Black Orcs are flat out better, for less. Black Orcs get same number of attacks on the charge, same or better WS, I3 instead of I2, same S/T/Save, better Ld, and charges, same base size. It seems like the only thing going for Temple Guard would be the option to use halberds and base stubborn... But you're paying 14/16 points vs 12. It seems like Black Orcs will win on the charges and once the grind sets in, win there too because even with GWs, they're the same initiative as the Lizardmen.

If you take point cost into account Black orcs are probably the best infantry unit in the whole game… along with night goblin mobs (because of the fanatics). O&G in fact have several things that are overturned compared to other armies. Their magic items are ridiculously efficient (to name just one, the trollhide trousers are a common armor that grants any character +1armor and 5+ regen, this means you can have any black orc character with an armor save of 2+, with regen and possibly a ward save or -1 to hit wielding a great weapon on a boar). Their weakness used to be leadership but with war and and horde everywhere you can easily have Ld 10 units around when armies like dwarves can only have that if they take a king.

Saurus vs two weapon black orcs is pretty similar. Ws and I goes to orcs for one less point. Ap and re roll 1s only on charge but saurus get ap always. Cold blood special rule is interesting compared to ignore panic. More use out of cold blood. Motely and quell hard to quantify. Da Boyz is just a tax. Interesting comparison but I don't know if I would say they are strictly better. Would have to play a few games to get a better sense of it.

@MrGunnar177 yeah, armies should bring different things for different styles of play. But if two units do the same thing, but one is 20% less, it seems like a balance problem. Granted they aren't the same units, but they're very similar in roles and a ability, hence the question. I think balance is a good thing for games, and units should get what they pay for. Either paying too much for a unit or too little is undesirable and a valid question to ask.

They do seem to good… As an old empire player it pains me to see empire so weak. Probably why Steve only have played them so few times. Their cavalry has been heavily nerfed, (in their knights not having great AS, and their pistoliers being rubish) their war machines has been nerfed their ranged infantry has been nerfed (in only shooting in one rank, like every body else). And their special rule with detachment is not unique for them any more. Loving the old world, but missing empire as they were in WAP. So looking forward for their arcane journal coming out.
