I am was really looking forward to buy this product, but it’s so expensive. Do you know of any organizations or ways to alleviate the cost?

Hi Grace, unfortunately when it comes to funding for assistive technology, there isn't much out there. If you are in the US you can try to get a case with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. If you are a veteran, the VA will buy equipment. Otherwise you can try the Lions Club, and Orcam themselves have a payment plan.

Excellent video. I do have a question, I am looking into purchasing the orcam my eye pro but am worried about its reliability-more specifically, how well it can stand up to daily use like being dropped, if it has a tendency of catastrophic failure, etc. if you have used this product for a while, could you give me an idea of how hearty it is when used daily for a year plus? Its a pricey item, and I don’t want to drop that much cash on something that will fail do to a single accident or inability to withstand ddaily use for mmany years; not trying to hate on the item, just really cautious. Hopefully my question makes sense, and thank you for your time.

Hi Selena, good question! In my experience the device is quiet hard wearing and reliable. There was an issue with the built in magnets at one point, but they resolved that by slightly altering the design. Other than that I have not had an issue with a unit that I can remember, and I have dropped our demo unit a number of times over the years! Hope that helps :-)

This is always the downside I'm afraid April! The cheapest version of the device in this video is $3500.

Many with low vision need to know ingredients on food packaging.. I'm extremely allergic to certain ingredients (anaphylactic shock) I didn't see how to narrow in (aim) at the ingredients.. And i need to identify prescription bottles, expiration dates, doses, frequency.. i didn't see that.. What about reading a glucometer or finding specific insulin and dosing? or reading a street sign so you can follow directions to get to a place? The things you showed are nice but not essential to independent living. could you focus on those things next time? Thanks.. Doctors Ophthalmologist are not informed and can't help.

Hi Rob, I would not recommend Orcam for some of these things. It should not be used for prescription bottles, expiration dates, doses, frequency due to the potential for inaccurate results. For insulin reading, a talking glucometer may be more viable. Ingredients on food packaging can be read by pointing to where they are, but how feasible this is depends on your level of vision. Orcam really works best in my experience for reading standard items of text, e.g. books, magazines, newspapers and mail. For other tasks, other devices may be more applicable, such as using an electronic magnifier for prescription bottles for example or using the ScripTalk service. Feel free to call at 414-615-0103 if you have questions.

Why would you put an advertisement on your site that requires reading when it's discussing a device that helps blind people? Pretty insensitive

I would prefer companies would direct their efforts to developing a device people with AMD could actually see with rather than a camera that talks to me . People with vision problems are being targeted by all sort of ridiculously high priced unpractical devices and medications

Hi Ralph, there are a number of devices to improve the vision of people with AMD! Take a look at IrisVision, eSight 4, Vision Buddy and Acesight VR!
