Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar
In the Strait of Gibraltar, a group of orcas sank a 15-meter sailing yacht, the Alboran Cognac, after ramming it in Moroccan waters. The incident occurred at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with two passengers onboard who felt sudden impacts to the hull and rudder before the yacht started taking on water. They were rescued by a nearby oil tanker and taken to Gibraltar. This event is part of a four-year trend of orca attacks on vessels in the area, believed to involve a subpopulation of around 15 orcas called “Gladis.” Since May 2020, nearly 700 such interactions have been recorded. Researchers are still investigating the reasons behind this behavior, considering possibilities like playful curiosity, social trends, or competition for prey. Despite their reputation, orcas, which are endangered, are actually the largest members of the dolphin family.
