Yet another streamer, network bridge and DAC that uses the Raspberry Pi for the digital part, third party software to control it and a digital to analog converter of own design. But this time it uses true balanced analog circuits…

Thanks Hans.Great video as always, Does Peacn Pi use potentiometer as analog volume or you can control analog volume with Roon "Device Volume" ?

It uses a regular potentiometer to control the digital volume control. And that can be controlled from Roon.

Very interesting, thank you! Can you clarify what "Digital controls will always reacts slower"? (I was thinking about hooking this up to a 200w class D power amp). Also? on which of your setups will you place this unit? Thanks again, have a great weekend!

With digital controls I mean touch buttons like on a remote. The potentiometer on the PecanPi lets you lower volume instantly. It’s definitely mid setup 2.

You can't compare these two, the Stream Box is a digital out box while the PecanPi is analog out.

Hello Hans- longtime fan and subscriber- I’m always interested in the value proposition when it comes to how cheap you can get what I would consider minimal “A” tier performance from DACs now that the technology has advanced so quickly since 2016. While I have auditioned say a Mytek Brooklyn Bridge streamer at a headphone show, you can’t do an a/b test to see how it handles things vs these sub $500 streamers. I bought theElac Discovery and like it a lot with the stock dac. How does it compare to this reviewed unit since you have had one also in your equipment rig for some time off and on...

What is the sound compared to my first generation SOtM SMS200 combined with ifi micro dsd dac and fed bij sbooster. Would it be an upgrade?

That's a completely different beast that doesn't include a DAC

You give the PecanPi high praise as the best HAT based DAC. How does it compare in sound quality against the comparably priced, but USB connected Allo Revolution DAC?

That depends on the unit the USB is on. If that's a quality network bridge, it's better. If you connect it to, for instance, the USB output of a Raspberry Pi, it's less.

Yes, if you use one of the four USB sockets on the Pi, not if you use, for instance the Allo USBridge Signature.

Am I correct in believing you said it's the best raspberry pi streamer? In a response to a comment asking where it fit in your 3 systems you said middle of #2. In your review of the Allo raspberry pi you said it fit in the top of your #2 system. I'm curious how the two compare as streamers. Is the difference that one has a DAC and the other doesn't?

The USBridge Signature isn't a DAC, it is only the RPi computer part of the streamer package. This PecanPi streamer reviews includes an RPi 3 + PecanPi DAC HAT. The PecanPi DAC HAT is what he is calling the best DAC HAT he's seen.

@@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel I was thinking of the streamer aspect of the two units, the Allo and the Pecan. But perhaps that's impossible as the Allo usbridge is only a steamer and the Pecan is a streamer/dac and the determining factor in sound is the DAC?

Modern digital volume controls usually are very good, also here. The time of poor 16 bit volume controls is far behind s so if no stupid errors are made, they form no problems.

Problem with the vocal audio on this video? Sounds like a dodgy mp3 and is a bit distracting. Otherwise great content and informative as usual.

Nothing wrong with your ears! It was a compromise. We had a heath wave which we normally don't have. So the 'studio' was blazing hot, I had to use a fan. I then filtered out the fan noise, thinking I could get away with it. But, hey, this is a channel for people with ears😞
