In todays video we are mulching all the weeds down in our overgrown orchard! We also have new life on the farm with the additon of Bertha's 8 newborn piglets. And we take a quick look at the goat herd and add them to Flockwatch to make it easy to keep track of any dosing and records.
Massive thanks to Major for letting us try out the cyclone 8ft mulcher. We are genuinely very impressed and it's on the list for next years TAMS grant!

Phil, I can highly recommend getting a triangle blade for your strimmer. It will make mincemeat out of those weeds. I've used on in my forest for ages, it just pulverizes blackberries, raspberries and other stemmy weeds. Just have to be careful around the trees. Let's just say I've had to replant more than once and leave it at that 🙂

That's the part about farrowing crates that people don't understand. While it is nice to give the sows space, bug commercial breed sows can be a bit clumsy and squash the piglets. Farrowing crates are designed to help keep the piglets safe. Where farrowing crates are legal, it's a choice/balancing act between the welfare of the sow vs that of the piglets.

5 metres between trees and rows, makes it so easy to mow, my trees are now 3 meters wide, but my rows are wider more 6 or 7 metres, because there were old trees, only one left is a apple. Rest were self seeded cherry plums or were outside the area that we needed.

A great cleanup in the orchard. You could use an Austrian scythe with a brush blade for cutting between the trees. It does a good job and you get a workout too!

An aul scythe between the trees is what you need in the orchard. The bees won’t mind the scythe either! Poor year for the bees after it being a great June

In the Orchard, to make maintenance very easy - simply put 3 inches of Large Bark mulch around the trees. You can spray off the grass and weeds with Weedkiller first, then apply the mulch. Then use the mulcher/mower down the centre of each row. Do this and you will have a tidy and easily maintained Orchard.

Nice job Phil and Liv. We used to have plastic pipe split long ways we put around young trees when we strimmed, worked a treat.

I am here kind of by accident, but I watched one of your previous videos about a vacuum pump repair and decided to give some of the others a watch, which was well worth it. Your videos have a very nice feel to it and you earned a new subscriber. Currently I am building a vacuum pump that's a bit more precise than yours, since I'm making the vanes out of stainless steel and it is going to work for more or less scientific purposes. I am super paranoid about balancing it out perfectly and having every tiny little bit as close to perfect as possible, but seeing your pump working in conditions worse than mine will ever see is definitely making me more calm. I will still probably spend a whole bunch of time on sanding it down as best as I can, but I probably won't have my heart racing nearly as much when powering it up for the first time, partly because of you. Thank you! ❤

Good but remember that it’s not a clock you’re building Yes it’s nice to be precise and we spent 25 years line boring and .0001 thousands of an inch could be important, but it can play with your mind if you get too concerned about it . There was a good story told about an English engineer and an Irish construction foreman on a site where ever and engineer over heard Irishman shouting to his workers (She,ll be close enough) Engineer pulled Irish foreman aside and explains that in engineering terms that they work to the nearest one thousands of an inch Irishman gives him wistful look and says ( a shure dat I’ll be close enough) after that build humming along My point don’t get too hung up on perfection

Hi Phil, the ideal machine for your orchard would be a AS940 Sherpa 4wd ride on mower, I have a AS Freerider mower for a Family holiday home in the Northwest, no need of a strimmer anymore, it would cut all around the trees and leave it like you left it after the Major😊

On the pigs back !😊 Do the Lard ! Especially the leaf seperate....I wonder if geese would do any work in the orchard or meat or layer chickens with nets...im a fan of animals taking the yoke to make the burden light....a razorsharp hand grass scythe or sickle around the trees and some mulch like others have said.. strimmer for the rest...I think you wouldn't regret setting up a simple aerated compost pile ,all/most work done with machine, get it up to temp to kill the weed seeds ,you have the ingredients, you could source biochar (from way out west on YT),mix at home and sell inoculated compost after lab testing

Once you have the abundant weed free compost ,the possibilities for veg sales at the shop increase ..with the right techniques and modern equipment and most importantly the people, nothing will hold you back (apart from the weather 😷). 🤘🏻

I been trying out a new kind of strimmer head, and thats like a wire wheel. I found it has far to much vibrations in fact the first kind i had a part of it came off. I now going to have a new kind of blade what looks interesting. The trouble is with a line kind of head it breaks.

If you're going to take the time to strim between trees a scythe would take the same time maybe faster and do a 10x better job. There are even special orchard scythes- shorter blades- that you can get closer and easier.
