Thank you for being blunt. I honestly was trying to build a template for every articulation of every library and have been driving myself mad. I’m still tempted to get preset patches, templates, etc.. for all my libraries. It just doesn’t have to be today. From this moment, I’m building small, writing music and build as I go along. Yes it’s two years later but any videos about templates are useful. Thank you.

So much great information in this video. I've been using the cheaper version of Cubase for years, but I think I'll need to upgrade to the pro version like you say, especially since I keep adding more libraries. Also, having instruments disabled by default in the template is a brilliant idea! Certainly a good reason to use track over rack instruments. I will say that racks do have the benefit of bulk operations, like freezing and unfreezing all of the instruments at once if running on a computer with lower processing power.

This is really useful! I use Pro Tools, but it’s interesting to see how you have this set up.

Thanks for this video. Is it possible to go deeper into bus for effects and for each sections (Wind, brass...?) and so on. Anyway it is a good starting point. thanks !

Would you be so kind as to share your template?

I just finished setting up a little template with Iconica Sketch, BBCSO Discovery and ProjectSAM The Free Orchestra. Great tip here regarding disabling tracks. Do you use the score editor in cubase while composing, and if so, how do you set up the score editor?

Hi there. I never use the score editor no. I use Dorico for notation stuff.....I don't find the score editor in Cubase very user friendly. When composing it depends whether its creating a melody and adding chords or preparing music to be played by live musicians which determines how I go about it. If it's for live musicians I'll use Dorico but for general composing in Cubase I work as per the videos Ive recorded covering Sketch to Orchestration......those 4 videos kinda covers how I work. Hope this helps. Rob

What's the difference between your BBC SO Long and Legato Tracks?
@MusicDirectorOnline2 жыл бұрын
Most Spitfire libraries use the terms long and shorts meaning long or short notes. Legatos however use some very clever transition technology to slur or slide notes together in a natural sounding way....plus, legatos aren't polyphonic.

I am curious to know how do you balance different publisher libraries together? :)

That is much easier said than done. There is a practise used by some to place a short midi instance at the beginning of each track that contains volume levels that standardise volumes for each instrument. The problem with that is that every time your return to the beginning of a track, all your volume refer back whether you want it to or not. The tendency is to load each instrument at a volume level around 0db but doing that you soon run out of head room. My suggestion would be to work through your libraries and identify which fall short in levels and then match every other track to those. It's a long laborious job though - I feel the real advantage of templates is have the instruments there and loaded and I just re-adjust the levels of those specific libraries as and when I use them.

Don't tell Jacob Collier that 1,000+ tracks is a waste....
