In today's episode we look at how a healthy Phalaenopsis orchid should look like and how a sick Orchid looks like!
Missed our previous episodes? Check them here and learn how to water, repot, fertilize and care for Phalaenopsis orchids! • Orchid Care for Beginn...
Roots on a healthy Phalaenopsis orchid should be silvery if dry and green if wet. They should be full of substance, not brown, mushy, or papery.
Leaves should be stiff, green and almost glossy. Try to avoid orchids with yellowing leaves, dark and sunken spots, discolored spots and patches, weird ring patterns and other spots that look unhealthy. More on Phalaenopsis problems here • Orchid Care for Beginn...
The stem and crown should also be green, not dark or dry. They are the main growth points of orchids and they should be in good order.
Flowers can indicate how long an orchid will be in bloom for. Here is how to extend blooming time to its full potential • Orchid Care for Beginn...

I like to buy off of the reduced price table at Lowes the plants are a little stressed but usually respond to normal care and do great after a few weeks in ICU I love my orchards so glad I bought the first one. And I rescued one from my daughter in law she received as a gift it was in distress but is on the rebound

I was recently gifted and orchid after years of me telling myself to not even look at them as I was sure I would kill such a delicate beautiful plant. Well your channel has helped keep from feeling so intimated and I am excited to start my journey with this plant.

I have two orchids and for the first time the one bloomed! I had it for 2 yrs and nothing!. I didn't know what I was doing wrong but never gave up on her and all of a sudden I saw a trim growing out and up I screamed in joy. My husband thought I had lost my mind. Lol. Because of you I never gave up! I always look for the orchids that walmart is just about to throw away. And I don't care how bad they look I need to save them and now I have 3 and they have survived not just being unwanted but me who knew nothing about orchid. I love them!!!! And I look forward to seeing them every morning. AND THE BLOOMS THEY HAVE TO SHOW ME!

Thank you so much for this series! I have always been terrible at keeping plants alive, and I didn't even try for years. Then I started watching your videos and decided to buy a phalaenopsis from the grocery store. She is so beautiful! But she has some issues, and I've been needing a lot of your advice. She was in moss, and the plug from the nursery was sooo compacted that all the roots that had been in it were long dead. So I got rid of all of that, and put her back in with just the newer moss - it was more than enough to fill the pot once I just fluffed it up! Plus I cut some holes in the pot, so hopefully she will breathe better now. Hopefully soon I can put her into a real slotted pot with some good repotme media. And if I keep her healthy maybe I will get more orchids. :)

Love your videos, they inspired me and my sister as well to have good thoughts about them, as so many die and are thrown away!…I just say if it’s too chilly where you sit and relax, your orchid won’t like it either and no straight sun !🥰🥰

Danny's always so nice and patient and covers everything we need to know and if we don't have it on this video we can watch it on another one of hers. People always ask after she does a video on watering how do I water my plant I just go grrrr! But Danny doesn't she's just patient and I realize some people's first language isn't English and that makes a difference. But I'm real worried about the day when the lady writes in and says I bought a phal today and now I'm regretting my purchase it has little babies on it and now not only am I responsible for the main plant but the babies too, how am I going to put them through school, college, doctor bills, I'm so worried I made a wrong decision. (haha)

I look forward to your video on saving the droopy orchid - mine looks exactly like it now :( Root rot and what I believe was stem rot at the base of the roots have essentially made it impossible for the poor orchid to hydrate. It's trying to push out some new roots from higher up the stem, but I have a feeling it just won't happen fast enough to save it.

Can you do a video or videos on identifying different ailments by the signs/symptoms appearing on different species of orchids. I have 2 phals with chlorophyll pigmentation loss, but no sign of spider mites under a microscope, and 2 dendrobiums that developed dark pitting on their leaves. I think this issue with the dens might be fungal, as we've just had winter, so no air flow. But I'm not sure, and it would be good to have some sort of reference for identifying common issues in each of the main groups phals, dendrobiums, cattleya, oncidiums etc

If my orchid has a purple tint on the leaves but it's mostly on the back side except for a new leaf which had started and stopped very tiny by the time I purchased it. Is this a normal leaf coloring or something I should be concerned with? Thanks for the help. Sorry I ask alot of questions but I want to give the best care possible to these beautiful plants

Love your videos, I have va question. Today I had to repot my orchid because the roots were bad. And somehow in the process I accidentally damaged the tiny flower spike. I also had to take away the plug that it had on the "stem" because it was suffocating the roots. Is there anything I can do to help it to feel good?❤❤❤

Hi Can you do a video on novelty orchids? Do they have a rest period? How much more light and water do they do they need than a hybrid orchid? Do you recommend semi hydro or self watering containers? Also, if you purchase a blooming orchid from the store in the Fall and it is in bloom, after you cut the spike can you make it spike again or should you wait until the following Fall to encourage a spike? I am referring to an orchid that was purchased in bloom, then immediately repotted from moss to “Repotme imperial mix”. This Phal orchid has mostly good roots and 6 fully formed leaves, one new growing, all green and firm. Thanks!

@MissOrchidGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you refer to novelty Phalaenopsis hybrids, here is a video on them kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLCDaKSW2NqzY40.html about your question, the orchid might rebloom on the same spike throughout winter and spring next year. It might dry the spike and grow another, or not grow anything at all. It's really up to it :)

I have 3 orchids that have droopy leaves. I put it in water for 15 minutes already couple of times, removed all rotten roots, did everything according to instructions of the videos I have watched. But the leaves are still droopy and wrinkled. I also bought potting mix from " repotme" site, put it in a new pot . Can you please tell me how long does it take for the orchids to recuperate? Or, am I loosing my orchids??

I have a quick question. Why is one side of each leaf slightly bigger than the other? I tried searching everywhere for it but I can’t find an answer for it.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, bigger new leaves are a sign that orchids are growing well and maturing, if they weren't yet mature. Having smaller and smaller leaves would be a sign that the orchid is stressed, or unhealthy.

MissOrchidGirl sorry but I meant how the leaf looks like two sections put together in one, but one side of the leaf has a longer tip than it’s other half that it’s connected it. Is this normal? All of my orchid’s leaf has this shape

My new orchid (a gift from some very well meaning friends) has mold in the roots. What can I do? I’ve already trimmed off the dead roots and repotted it this past Sunday. Two days, later I saw what looked like it might be mold, then today it looked worse so I took it out and about cried. Many little specs of blue green which look like mold to me. It’s not over too many roots, but because it was in such bad shape before, there aren’t many roots left. They still feel firm but I’m not sure how the mold will affect it. Do I need to cut these roots too or can I save them?

Hi, I would try a different brand of medium. Let the orchid be inside the medium, no more treatments and let it dry well, don't rewater until everything is dry. Is it the only orchid that does this?
@ambermoore5613
@ambermoore5613 4 жыл бұрын
Ok! I changed the medium from the moss (it was really moist even after a week and of no added water) to a more bark based medium. I’ll try letting it dry completely out. The bark medium dries way faster than the moss so it shouldn’t take too long. I’m a plant newbie so this is really the only orchid I have and I have no other plants. So far it’s just on the roots. Once it’s dried, do I need to remove the molded roots or just kinda watch it?

Hi Charla, true they are quite pricy. But what you are paying for is their experience. I've just started with the net pots with spagnum moss for my latest phals and they're doing great. Bit the bullet and paid the price !! Bought some bark media from them and can see the quality is much better than those of Home Depot or some of my local nursery, you can smell the difference. When I started couple years back, bought spagnum moss from my local nursery and within six or seven months the moss was really sick looking. Unless you've been following this or other orchid channels you wouldn't know what to turn to or perhaps get ill advised. I think purchasing from Repotme you'll get AAA without the trial of error. Not getting paid from them, is just my experience. I first started with their MSU fertilizer and I hadn't need to look back since. Everything I get from them is first quality. But of course you have to know of proper usage and that's where Danny is ...
