I would still recommend having them in a transparent pot because, as someone who as a lot of orchids, being able to see the roots is important, it shows if the orchid is healthy but also shows when it needs water ! Also you can then put it in a pretty pot and you can change it as often as you’d like 👍

Don’t forget orchids have aerial roots! These roots prefer being above the soil because they absorb moisture and carbon dioxide directly from the air. (Fun fact-this is because they originally used them to climb trees to reach light in denser forests) Sometimes if they’re brown and crunchy there’s still a thin little root stuck in the casing that will grow when the plant enters its leaf/root growing phase (it will not flower in this phase bc flowering takes up a lot of energy and it wants to use this for its roots and leaves!) Love your videos!

My mom used to wrap the roots in dried coconut husk together on a tree trunk and tie it all with a piece of cloth or wire and our mango tree looks so good when our orchids bloom. The roots crawl and attach themselves to the tree over a period of time so the orchids won't fall when the string gets snapped.

Rather than just breaking the root to get the orchid out the pot, just cut the pot or squish the pot untill everything comes out. Even though the leaf is yellow, the green is full of nutrients and you should let the leaf go yellow first so the nutrition can go to the plant. Also, don’t just cut roots like that, you could be cutting perfectly fine roots just because it dry.

a couple things from somebody who has 6 orchids: 1- yellowing at the base of the leaf doesn't mean you should cut it off. You can because its your plant, but that leaf is still mostly green and therefore still giving the plant food and energy 2- cutting off the aerial roots seemed pretty unnecessary since they looked alive and healthy and the unnecessary cuts are just risking infection
@seymourbones
@seymourbones 2 жыл бұрын
I also think repotting immediately after bringing it home would likely cause unnecessary stress and cutting to the last bloom node is also wasting energy the plant needs to recover in a new environment. It'll probably be fine but if you want a more healthy plant i would do these differently

I was given an orchid after my mother's funeral and we kept it inside for a really long time, it bloomed every couple months or so and it didn't take a lot of care but we had to move so while painting the place we decided to leave it in one of those hanging baskets made for air plants, we ended up accidentally leaving it behind and when we came back years later after we bought back the house the plant was absolutely massive, it had arms that reached in every direction, it's blooms were so vibrant and alive, we left it in that place and it flourished for about 10 years until a hurricane had ripped it down and thrown it on the ground, there wasn't much we could do other than try and replant it but it was just too large and we ended up cutting a bunch of the stems to try and save it, somehow this plant pulled through but it only had one stem left over in the end, still have it to this day, for some reason it used to be a vibrant purple but now the blooms are mostly just a pale white with a hint of purple towards the middle

When you say you left it in a hanging basket made for air plants, was the orchid still in it's pot, or were the roots exposed? Orchids are bea-u-ti-ful flowers but they absolutely were not created to live squished up in a pot. They are crawlers on the floors of the rain forest. Anyway, seems like your orchid was exceptionally happy with that spot. I never hear about orchids growing huge like that in a pot.

This video gave me high hopes!! I’d love longer videos on KZfaq that show us slowly how your doing everything & having you talk/teach us about how to properly cut down, re-pot, water ect…. I truly never knew how much I loved this topic! Hahaa
