To me, the pride rock orc rendition is reminiscent of the Krugel Orcs from the Hollow World setting (from D&D BECMI).

Sam Wood's 3e are my favorite Orcs. They best embody pure undiluted strength and aggression.

I grew up with the 1e orcs, but not the ones depicted there. I had some Choose Your Own Adventure books that had Elmore's depictions of goblins and orcs that I really liked. These days the orcs in my worlds are a bit of a hybrid of my own design and the early ones in those books. The tainted ones are devoted to the void and nightmarish looking. The few that aren't have fairly feral yellow or reddish eyes and tend to have an unnerving glare for those not used to it. I will be brutally honest, while the first image is ridiculous, and a prime example of committee over creativity when it comes to art, the second image comes across as a grade-school version of 'I'll show them!". There's a slight bit of humor there, with it depicting the orcs in the first image getting butchered, but it comes across as one of those pictures a middle-schooler would draw about bullies or teachers they didn't like. So much more could have been done with it that would have felt like a more genuine attempt at re-establishing what orcs could look like. I do like, however, that the ones in the second picture have evil grins, instead of happy 'day out with the kids' that seems to be rife with more modern images I keep seeing in the 6e/5.1e/oneD&D/marketing-department-whoopsie these days. The rock, while looking a little like 'Pride Rock' from The Lion King (I'm assuming that's what the reference is from) is actually a simple compositional trick. I don't think it represents anything, it's simply a style choice. Whether by the artist or the art director is unknown, but I've seen it done in other images as well. A way of having characters across multiple 'planes' of view without them all being on ground level. Personally, give me some of the LoTR orcs in there. Whether from the original books, or even the movies. I kind of like the idea that they're scrabbly, mean-spirited hellspawn rather than massive hulking creatures (Unless they're the Uruk'Hai, or leaders). But all of this, of course, is just personal preference.

My favorite three orcs in order: Warhammer/40k Orks B/X D&D pigmen Peter Jackson's LOTR orcs oh...and maybe the ones you can play as in ESO. But still...those are more like Warhammer Orks

Wow this is great!!! For me, favorite orcs would have to be the ones portrayed in John Howe's Lord of thr Rings art, used as inspiration for the Peter Jackson films. I think they're closest to the 2E orcs. Great video!!

I'm a fan of the WoW orcs. They are the right amount of intimidating and savage. Also, they have a true powerful build.

I want a tshirt with this painting on it to wear at Cons and gaming stores on my travels. A go pro would be fun also, to get reactions for youtube shorts videos.

2nd or 3nd Edition Orcs are better. But they shouldn't be large. They are Dwarf to Elf sized. Im not sure why we keep seeing these steroided half elf half ogre things.

4th edition are also cool, but as mentioned their tusks are somewhat disproportional.

Technically its late 2e / early 3e Orcs and heavily influenced by Lord of the Rings trilogy films . My fave ORC is 3e . If you had to pick a culture orcs are a monsterous version of ancient Mongols.

I prefer the 3e and 4e orcs, even if they do have tusks making it impossible for them to eat. The larger more muscular orcs fit into the image of orc in my head and my gaming worlds. Keep up the good world guys.

I mostly played AD&D but when Warhammer and AD&D 2e came out I thought those were huge improvements on orcs. But now after having watched The Wheel of Time series I kind of like to imagine orcs looking a bit like the trollocs. More bestial and horned. Very much Uruk Hai on demonic steroids. I love the satire of the art here.

That painting is hilarious and a much better take on orcs compared to the wotc painting. The new edition of the game could be the best version ever and I will never own those books because of the completely lame art. I would have zero desire to look at them ever. Wotc should be embarrassed by what they have done to d&d but with intolerable smugness they believe they have elevated the game. Nothing could be further from the truth. My choice of orc is 2nd edition or how they are depicted in LOTr art and the movies.

While I support and uphold the right of any DM/table to play D&D with their own house rules (as Gygax intended) I do have a problem with having this kind of nonsense shoved down my throat. I conclude by stating that I saw the writing on the wall decades ago when TSR became WoTC and so stop wasting my money and time on their products. I still play 2bd Edition and occasionally the original D&D box series.
