The way I see it, your awakened spellbook is something like a companion...it may have a personality, and a very symbiotic relationship with the wizard...the spellbook learns from the wizard, who seeks spells so it can learn, and so both benefit. The capstone feature, which saves the wizard at the cost of the spells they learn, might be something similar to your awakened spellbook losing their "memory" or "personality"...in a really grim way, your friend is losing a part of themselves in order to save the wizard. It's a fascinating concept.

The reality of it being a conduit that is either at full power or not. Creating a life is not a spirit dreaming to be prior to conception after all. The warped circumstance being exactly as you said though. They touched on Lichdom for example. Done properly you are tethered to nature (the elements..) in negation (Autumn..) whereas the perverse rendition results in a slow fatality involving insanity no less. Essentially the Archivist has grasped the negative plane & the prime material plane fundamentally & through a hint of artifice at that! Encountering a evil rendition would result in some sort of single celled horror story getting it's next fix from the exhaust pipe that consists of it's solid state. ⛲

Artificer vs wizard. It's just like the difference between Eldritch Knight vs Bladesinger, artificers and wizards are both arcane spellcasters who study magic basically the same way, but wizards are like mathematicians while artificers are like engineers.

I honestly see the Scribe as meshing the Archivist Subclass from the Artificer & the Lore Mastery Subclass. It helps make the Archivist make sense & nerf's the LM [I get it's a UA Subclass but as it is, it is/can be OP Broken]. Because with the Scribe, they're able to a much limited sense modify the damage type of their Spells. Though, depending on how the Scribe "prepares" their Spellbooks (ie dependent on what Spells they choose) it can be even more Broken then the LM's similar Ability. - Scribe's: "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with the damage type of another spell in your spellbook, as your spellbook magically alters the spell’s formula for this casting." - LM's: "When you cast a spell with a spell slot and the spell deals acid, cold, fire, force, lightning, necrotic, radiant, or thunder damage, you can substitute that damage type with one other type from that list (you can change only one damage type per casting of a spell). You replace one energy type for another by altering the spell’s formula as you cast it. - When you cast a spell with a spell slot and the spell requires a saving throw, you can change the saving throw from one ability score to another of your choice. Once you change a saving throw in this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest."

In comparison, it's a powerhouse.

Absolutely, also since it is any spell damage of a type you have in your book, all you need is magic missile to bypass almost any immunity. Now your fireball does force damage. Or you are fighting anything with vulnerability to any damage type? for example, you just need one of Xanthars guide radiant spells, like Sickening radiance at 4th level or dawn at 5th, and now you can blast undead and fiends. Imagine a Disintegrate against a boss with a damage vulnerability? 20d6 +80 dmg.

just thought of this, you can switch up the damage type of bigby's hand to do damage per turn. Or animate objects. There is no limit on what damage type you are exchanging. Just that it changes the damage type of a spell to any other type.

Some of the time costs associated with scribing a single spell scroll can range from meh to ungodly absurd (even for a fantasy setting). I had run this theme as a homebrew basically. Where the spellbook absolutely was the familiar, it could fly around in book form and could be shift into different animated objects, like resummoning a different familiar type. The wizard had the ability to ritual cast summon familiar if it was 'destroyed'. The trade off is.... if you get it destroyed and then take a long rest without your book... no spell prep can be done.

If you ever had a GM actually take or destroy your spell book this school is worth it for that alone! I started Out of the Abyss and we were captured and everything we had was taken. My GM told me my spell book was destroyed. I read later that he wasn’t technically supposed to do that. We were supposed to be able to have a chance to find our items once we escaped. Anyway, he destroyed it and for a long time I had no book. I finally got it back, but for the entire campaign all I had were the two free spells per level. It was horrible honestly.

Looking at the "Spelldamage-Swap"-Ability: A possibility to reign it in could be: "[...] you can temporarily replace its damage type with the damage type of another spell | OF THE SAME BASE-LEVEL OR HIGHER | in your spellbook." (maybe lowered by a Spell-Lvl every few class levels? Base-level so upcasting doesn't confuse/intervene?) That way you wouldn't have as big of a problem with spelltypes (Magic Missile + Fireball = Ouch!), while also giving an additional meaning to the "Collector"-part of your Spellbook and of being a Scribe?

What spells would be best to cast as a ritual using this feature? I would say Find Familiar, but that could get expensive. “When you cast a wizard spell as a ritual, you can use the spell’s normal casting time, rather than adding 10 minutes to it. Once you use this benefit, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest.”

So can anyone explain to to me why Bards can have double the Arcana skill of a Wizard who arguably spends their whole life doing nothing else than study Arcana (not restricted to Arcana, but the Bard can apparently be more expert in any skill than the accompanying EXPERT in said field)?

Game explaination: bards and rogues are skill monkeys, they are build to be better than other classes in skills Fluff explaination: bards travel around and collect a lot of knowledge on their travels, including knowledge that you may not find in a book and unlike wizards they aren't trying to learn spellcasting with their studies of magic, this way bards can focus more on the actual study of magic and be better than wizards, who also try to cast spells with the help of the study. Basically bard is the master of the theoretically knowledge, but doesn't get the practical knowledge which the wizard gets
@rowanhawklan9707
@rowanhawklan9707 4 жыл бұрын
@@PoisonGlamour2399 disagree on both counts so Bards learn more of EVERYTHING than any other class because rules? Also Bards are unarguably the MOST powerful casters in the game raw as there arcane secrets feature allows them to pair spells that where NEVER supposed to be paired for totally absolutely game breaking results. The rules or rule that allows the expertise feature is badly thought out and poorly implemented (putting aside the game breaking arcane secrets).

I think when the dnd team decides to go certain routes I feel like they don't take into consideration how it changes dnd as a whole. I think implementing an idea that any item can become sentient as if it has a mind in it already would change the entire foundation of a setting. If they are going to do something like this then I feel the only way to do it is to bring back prestige classes to make it feel like not everyone can do this. If they did it that way then it would explain why not every class has some way of interacting or some knowledge of all objects having a conviousness.

I don't like the 14th level ability only because I don't think it will ever be used. It has a high cost and by that point even a paladin or artificer, who are half casters, have revivify. I feel its too late to be useful and too high a cost to ever be used. Why would I do that when I can just roll a new wizard and go get my old wizard's spells? It seems like sacrificing too much to come back to life. maybe making the wish recovery count as casting an 8th or lower level spell so as to not proc the 33% fail rate could fix this? I don't know. It seems like it's useless for most campaigns and even in ones without a class that can revive it punishes you too heavily for using a class feature. imagine if barbarians got an ability to revive themselfs after one minute, but they permanently lost 1 rage per day? maybe you can use it once or twice but too many times and it just ruins your character which is not how a class feature, much less a subclass capstone, should be. Maybe if you could use it once per week without any punishment or something? Or you couldn't cast those spells until you finished a long rest? It just seems too permanent and punishing for a class feature.

I hope this never gets published but If this got published I'd just remove any cost to meta magic for sorcerers. It's the only way they'd be blanced against wizards. Then all their Sorcery points would be available as magic recharge ability, or for other class features that require them. Making the class actually effective.

Love this subclass, but the clone spell makes the whole sacrificing spells to resurrect a completely irrelevant feature gained at that level.

Not entirely. The Clone spells takes 120 days to mature. "This clone forms inside a sealed vessel and grows to full size and maturity after 120 days." If your clone hasn't matured yet, this is a good stop-gap that you can use, and it takes a number of long rests to regain those sacrificed spells. Or the Wish spell, but probably better to just use those long rests to recover them.

Not only is this the best thing to happen to wizards, it’s the best thing to happen to dnd.

Transfering the concept from the artificer to the wizard was the right move, but this version feels a little off. The capstone in particular (while cool) doesn't really make sense to me for this class. This subclass should be all about information gathering, storing, and distributing. Less about power and more about utility. I do like the companion, though.

That capstone is awful! Why would you pick a subclass that sends your character into a death spiral!?
@fungmunk5767

When picking between guaranteed death, and a death spiral with a chance of escape. I'd always pick the death spiral. Remember that you revive one minute after death, so if your cleric revives you before then you don't have to worry about losing spells. Also, it's still a choice thing, you don't have to. So if you think there's still a chance of being revived after that one minute then just choose not to use the feature. I think the point of this ability is that it's an ability a wizard shouldn't want to use because it really is a last resort, but it gives you a back up plan to get back into the fight and keep playing with that character. Imo a character resurrection on death, is pretty much never a bad ability, but they had to bring in some downsides to balance it.

When I saw that I really thought of it as an NPC ability. Imagine the players defeating the mad wizard guarding the ancient library, not detecting any trace of undeath or necromancy, but he just keeps coming back over and over, weakened each time but still able to throw out hurt. Then finally someone realizes they need to destroy his spell book.
