Fiberglass windows from Canada are both higher quality and less expensive than the American windows we looked at, IMO. We used triple pane fiberglass windows from Accurate Dorwin and Inline and love them. U-factors of 0.14 and 0.19 for most windows with high SHGC. Their fiberglass was infinitely more robust than Marvin's and less expensive. Cost for a tilt turn was literally 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of Kolbe and Marvin, and I like Inline's better. You won't get wood, and wait times will be longer.

Very few homes in Germany have air conditioning, so they open their windows a lot more often for ventilation. There are also security issues when opening a casement window that make them less popular in the USA.

@@UnExcited42 I was referring to an open window. A single hung window (traditionally used in the USA) can be cracked opened a little and locked in the partially open position. There are no insurance policies voided in the USA for having an open window. My main point was that not many people even open their windows, especially in Texas.

In Germany the windows you get can have built in fly screens, blinds and outside grill that drops down when needed at night for security or as another shield of protection against blizzard or wild weather. Another type has drop down sun shade or privacy screens. The windows in most northern european countries are awesome.

Another aspect you can have in those windows are locking pins for commercial use these doors and windows can't be pried open without taking a lot of time. These steel pins are also locking into a steel insert. As door fitment is another issue you have in commercial spaces for security and indoor climate control reasons.

I can only agree with Matt here: take a look into what's available from Europe. @@mark9118 As someone who lives in Germany.. What? Germany has the lowest home ownership percentages in the entire European Union. There are generational homes, but this is not so common in modern times. The relative cost of products for "home goods" are not significantly higher here than what you pay in the states. However, generally people are not willing to spend money on things of poor quality. As such, generally speaking the quality is much higher. Even our "home depot" windows are similar to the windows here. Our exterior doors are the same story. Multiple seals and lock bolts which extend from 3 side. Exceptions being things like wood floors, where the US stuff is way, way, way nicer for same or lower price. And, we don't have fitted carpets. We glue that stuff down without even padding, if you can believe that! and at least you put the traffic lights on the far side of the intersection so you can actually see them. When we put down the sealant for the threshold, we put 2 very fat beads of caulk straight across the entire bottom to make sure there's a connection. We want to make sure there's contact between the threshold and the floor. Those thin beads at 10:26 are fine, as long as everything is perfectly flat and perfect, which it probably is on Matt's job ! A couple of things to consider with these kinds of windows. Yeah they’re bullet proof and super efficient. But they’re not practical if you have blinds/shades/curtains. Not sure about screens for bugs, but none of the windows in Germany had screens where we usually stay. Also if there’s a breeze they can swing all over the place they’re super heavy and will knock out anything in their path. So you can’t use them if you have anything on the window sill. And you can use them if you have a desk or coffee table of plants ... anything in the way of their path. If you want to black out the windows you can install electric or manual storm shutter outside that rolls down and blocks out all light (like they have in Europe).

So you didn't realise you can lock them? I mean you open with handle, open window and with handle you lock it in position. Window will not push it more open unless it's a really stormy wind. And no problem with curtains if you want fresh air in as you just tilt it to get max air exchange, so you are not supposed to open it fully. Here in Europe blinds usually are built into the windows itself so no problem with them either.

5:47 could also put a water resistant wood there. Like in Europe before (and with Thermopane wood frame windows) we used to put oak on the bottom. And it doesn't all need to be oak, just the part facing up. I'm sure there's at least one place in your area that does laminated wood (or can do).

Check out Alpen Windows in Colorado. They’re basically licensed to make Rehau’s German windows in the US; same uPVC tech with polystyrene insulation inside; they have Windows that can reach R-11 efficiency. They supplied all the windows for the Empire State Building’s most recent renovation. What I cannot vouch for is price vs these Polish windows in Matt’s video. Also - check out Seemray and Provia Windows. Similar to Alpen.

This is crazy that you made this video now. I didnt know there was supplier for these in the US. I did it the hard way :( I bought a standard bi-level home in New Jersey in 2019 and while I was doing the full gut demo, had to go a wedding in Europe(Kosovo) for my brother in law's wedding. When I was out there I had seen these types of windows but kept telling myself that I couldn't install these on my 2x4 exterior walls. My uncle is a builder back home and forced me to talk to a manufacturer friend of his and they both ensured me I could do it. Believe it or not I had made the entire order pretty much through Viber after I had gotten back. Conversion from Inches to CM was kind of a pain but these German designed windows are on another level of insulation that I really wasn't expecting. I was going to go with Anderson 400 series double hung windows and these cost me literally half the price with double the insulation. And man are they sound proof. Triple pane is kinda the way to go for these. It was a bit more expensive but compared to how much money I was saving, I didnt care. Another thing that I had added that I didn't see on yours were exterior blinds to these windows and exterior insect screen(cause when you open these windows they are like opening a door to your exterior and there's a bunch of mosquitos in my area) which I highly recommend as they look really nice from the exterior but when these aluminum blackout blinds come down, you cant its truely blackout from the outside so great for privacy at night especially. The only difference is the window has this extra pocket at the top but the functionality is amazing and surprisingly not necessary to water proof outside of norm. You can even make them electric if you wanna go crazy but I didn't see the value of that and thought it to be too much work. Was wondering would those connections have to be 220v? though didnt entertain the idea. Have lived in the house for a little under a year and no bowing or bending of the windows and no loss of functionality that I've noticed so far and no issues in use or insulation in both winter and summer. Guess cause its PVC and not vinyl? Maybe its the metal locking mechanism that is like a vacuum seal when you close them, but was kinda worried about that tbh when I pulled them out of the container. Very sturdy windows though and while installed them myself, def requires a second pair of hands as they are pretty heavy. BTW, got 1 sliding door for my backyard from idk what brand, but I am not a fan of it because of how complicated it is to open/close. It like pops out when you have to open it and god is it annoying. I will 100% be replacing it for something more functional in the future. Wouldn't order again but from the end of the video I see these are a different brand/mechanism all together and look much more functional. Might order one from this supplier just to keep the style the same through the home.

To electrify the blinds makes sense if you wanna fully automate AKA "smart-home" them. Another thing is its span, we have a full blown 8m² "Sonnenfenster" that was used to have a blind made of wood. After replacing it with one made of plastic it was even that heavy that we've decided to electrify it.

I'm not a video maker, so hopefully text will do: Texas isn't used to being colder than Alaska. In fact, during the winter power plants can shut down and undergo maintenance. The summer is when power is in peak demand. On Sunday night, windmills stopped working (no anti-freeze systems, I believe, were in place), natural gas power plants went down, coal plants went down, nuclear power plants went down. I think around 1/3 of Texas' capacity went down. These places were either not winterized in response to a less severe winter storm in 2011, or not to the extent to survive these temperatures, or protocols were not followed. Also, many homes are heated by natural gas, and homes were given priority over natural gas power plants, so that's also why some of them turned off. The grid didn't fail, but to keep it from failing, power had to intentionally be shut off. Up in Dallas, snow and temperature records from 50 years ago were broken. Enough power was brought back to restore power to 400,000 households, but during the night is another storm, but the temperatures are slowly rising. Thursday is almost above freezing, then Friday is finally above freezing. Also, on a personal level, homes don't appear to be insulated terribly well. My home is from 1999. I was actually supposed to have someone who is BPI certified (got the idea from another one of Matt's videos) come over yesterday, not realizing I chose the coldest day in decades. I have a thermal camera that attaches to my phone. I can see freezing air come in through wall outlets and switches along the exterior, and through windows, which is why I'm watching this video. I had some rooms that were already hard to keep comfortable during normal weather.
