I think it's so sad people can't get over the "Raging Bull should have won" thing. Ordinary People is a amazing movie,the acting it's fantastic,it definitely deserved the award. Some people say it's outdated now,but I only recently watched and I have never felt so touched by a movie,I could relate so much with it and it's one of the most real movies about depression and family issues. It became one of my favorites movies,if not the most favorite. It's one of the few movies I can watch over and over again. I haven't watched Raging Bull,but I don't need to watch it to know it's not going to have me as emotionally invested as Ordinary People,no matter how good it is.
@deltacos3187
@deltacos3187 9 жыл бұрын
Raging Bull is listed as the 4th best film of all time by the American Film Institute...you have no idea how short sided your assumption is. You're missing out because, Raging Bull is a madhouse. It's the best depiction of greed ever displayed on the big screen. Do me a favor and just watch the opening credits of Raging Bull...you can thank me later. Enjoy! By the way, Ordinary People is one of the worst wins of all time. Not only was Raging Bull more well directed, written, acted, shot, edited and more well received by critics than Ordinary People but, David Lynch's The Elephant Man runs circles around Ordinary People. The academy has regretted snubs like Raging Bull and Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan.
@MissSiul
@MissSiul 9 жыл бұрын
That's your opinion, thank you for sharing but it you be much better if you would not share it as fact. I want to watch Raging Bull eventually, and I don't doubt it's a amazing movie or that it deserved the award. My complain is that people hold a stupid grudge against Ordinary People because it won, never getting tired of insulting it every time they see a mention of it. Acting as if it's a horrible movie and there's no way it could have won. Too bad for you (and the people who are still bitter about it even after 30 years) OP won, it's beautifully acted and directed, and for me and many other people a very personal movie. Timothy Hutton plays the part beautifully(not angsty or unlikable like most depressed teens in movies), and so does the rest of the cast. I was not alive back then, but from what I've read this type of family drama was not that common, so it definitely holds value beside the movie itself.
@deltacos3187
@deltacos3187 9 жыл бұрын
It's not just my opinion. As I claimed, even the American Film Institute has pointed it out. Don't start with the always cliche and very naive "that's your opinion" bullshit. I'm bitter about the win because, not only was Raging Bull better but, the Elephant Man was much better as well. And your argument is so stupid, no bad movie even gets nominated for best picture. It's just sad when the true winners and better movies lose for political reasons.
@MissSiul
@MissSiul 9 жыл бұрын
As I said, I don't doubt RG is a briliant movie, but so is Ordinary People. Just because the American Film Institute say which movies are the best doesn't mean we all should just agree. Different movies touch people in different ways, and it would be very boring if everybody liked the exact same movies. Raging Bull still gets so many praise, why care so much about the oscar? If OP had lost I'd still find it a great movie and not be bothered at all, and would not make excuses for why it lost and bother people that like the winning movie, that's childish and disrespectful. Like I said, it's been over 30 years, and there's more to movies than how many oscars they win. You and so many people still love Raging Bull, so why keep obssessing that it didn't won the oscar? There are plenty of great movies that never get even nominated. From now on I'm gonna stop replying because I guess we'll just have to agree on disagreeing, but I hope you get what I mean from my comments. Take care.

Alberto Arras Maybe it's a good thing that Ordinary People got Best Picture then, so it won't be as easily forgotten. Raging Bull and Elephant Man will stay remembered even despite how many awards they do or don't win. If I pull up a title like "Ordinary People" most people will go "what movie's that?" For the record, I think both Raging Bull and Ordinary People are fantastic films in their own right. I haven't seen Elephant Man yet, but I suspect it is very well-directed too, since I like most Lynch films. But I don't think whether Ordinary People has been forgotten or not dictates whether it is a film deserving of acclaim or not, because many great films have been relatively forgotten, but it doesn't mean that they're not great films.

I've seen Raging Bull once. Didn't think much of it. I've seen Ordinary People over 20 times and still think its one of the top 30 films I've ever seen.

Because Ordinary People beat Raging Bull and The Elephant Man, it is often rated among the likes of The Greatest Show on Earth, Driving Miss Daisy and Shakespeare in Love, the times the Academy really dropped the ball. But that's not fear. It's a great. A masterpeace by alle accounts. Was it the best film of the year? I can see why someone would say that. It's not one of those cases: 'What were you thinking?" It's a perfectly worthy choice, and perhaps that's the best you can hope for.

Lynn Turman I want to make sure I understand your comment correctly. So are you saying that films for kids are only for kids and that they are not for adults? There are plenty of animated films that have plenty of beauty and emotion usually more than the ones actually made for Adults! Let me give a few examples this list is also to prove that Animation is Art and studios such as Illumination, Blue Sky, and a couple of others are just garbage: Fantasia Beauty and the Beast (1991) Wall-E Kubo and the Two Strings Kung Fu Panda 2 Up! The Lego Batman Movie The Prince of Egypt Chicken Run Coraline Shaun the Sheep Movie The Peanuts Movie Toy Story Spirited Away Howl’s Moving Castle The Iron Giant The Secret of NIMH along with many others!!’

Everybody is saying Raging Bull should have won. I will throw a curveball and say Raging Bull, The Shining and Empire Strikes Back were all better. But I will say Ordinary People was a mighty fine film.

It was a mighty find film but Raging bull is kind of top 10 in many all time lists. Ordinary people wont appear even in 500. I heard of this film when i heard Raging bull and scorcese lost.

The Shining was actually nominated for two razzies that year, worst director and worst actress. It was a bomb at the time and people made fun of it. John Carpenters The Thing was nominated for worst music! Now both films are considered classics.
