Chromatic aberration is usually a problem with low cost telephoto lenses. In this aspect the TT Artisan performs well. Sharpness even at the widest aperture is quite good also. Impressed with mine.

Thanks for the review. For what I have seen this lens makes a lot of sense as a 500mm prime. Anything that is equal or best, even within manual focus, is still more expensive and I would have to do too much cleaning on it. I’m looking forward to the nikon f version.

thanks for the review! I was looking something like this before I bought 100-500.. still tho.. with fast moving subjects I would say AF is just what I need for now.. btw, what is the minimum focus distance?

The 100-500 is best suited for fast moving subjects. It takes a second or two to nail the focus on the TTartisan. I don't recall. I never got close to it. When I shot my son and dog, I was about 10 feet away. I just find getting closer than that just feels too close.

Thanks for this review Simon ! looks like it delivers for what it promises, in a certainly for that price impressive quality. And it doesn't suffer from the donut-bokeh as seen in equally cheap mirror-reflex lenses who also offer long focal lengths. But given I'm addicted to eye-AF and IS, I don't see me using this lens instead of my 100-500.

Thanks Werner. Then I challenge you to turn of AF. Shooting manual is definitely a fun experience when shooting birds ;)

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker heheh Simon, after me throwing some challenges to you, you're now returning the favor 😛 I did enjoy shooting manual with focus peaking using the 24-105/4 for waterfalls and landscapes .. but shooting skittish birds I'm not sure it can be fun. However, on November 17th I'm renting a bird hide (with my wife and my colleague) where we should see plenty of kingfishers .. After its 5th dive it might be worth trying to see whether manual focus keeps better focus compared to eye-AF trailing the bird. Anyway, after another (not-planned) kingfisher session, my conclusion in hindsight was I should have used a narrower aperture ..

The birds I showed in the video required spray and pray. They just move so fast. 20 fps really helps, but still fun. Bird-eye af is a very nice improvement that is hard to move away from.

Thank you. I enjoy shooting manual. I don't do it all the time, but it's essential for product shots. I'm more excited by the 200-800, but that lens will cost a whole lot more.

it's on sale on Amazon today. but I won't buy this lens. got an rf 800mm and ef 100-400 ii. that has af :)
