My mom got one as a gift back in 2007, and we still use it to this day!

The XL21 came originally in two colors creme with tan bag and black with tan bag. Then they discontinued the creme color and introduced the silver color and the naming became the XL 21 titanium series. So the cor naming was black and titanium. While the black model still came with a tan bag the silver color came with the gray bag. I personally like the black one better but had my bag swapped with the titanium gray bag which makes he machine very sharp:)

My Grandmother had one of these XL21’s. My mom had a Fantom Lightning canister. My grandma is now looking for another Oreck and she said she didn’t like the new one she bought off Amazon. She said it just didn’t feel like her XL21, but I suspect she got the commercial Oreck because she said it had an orange cord. She needs to try the Elevate Command or Conquer.

If the sticker is not on the back the main housing was most likely replaced. When they came in for warranty with bad housings we peeled off the stickers and stapled them to the owners manuals.

I know this is a weird comment, but your vinyl kitchen tile is the same as mine. That freaked me out for a second, BECAUSE YOUR CARPET, WALLS, AND BASEBOARDS ARE THE SAME COLOR TOO

The XL21 fan housing tapers as it connects to the bottom tube causing an opening 2/3 the size of the opening on an Oreck XL/XL2...clogs very easily, causing the back side of the fan housing to split open (if the blockage isn't fixed). I would never own one for this reason, much prefer the XL2. They all have the same motors and the fans are essentially identical.

So you would recommend this over the tacony uprights? And also did oreck put soft brushrollers in certain oreck xl21s and some stiff ones in other xl21s and also how much of a performance boost does it give the oreck with the synthetic belt

It really depends on what someone wants. I think the more durable and deep cleaning would be one of the Tacony uprights with a metal brushroll. However the Oreck especially in the newest Elevate series is far quieter and more refined a machine. To my knowledge all XL21s use the same brushroll.

What would be a logical upgrade to an XL21? I've had one for 15+ years and need to change it out. I was looking at the U2000RB-1 but have considered a Tacony (Riccar) or Sebo. Thoughts?

A U2000RB-1 uses the "classic" Oreck motor and fan, outside the belt it would actually be a bit of a downgrade from an XL21. The Elevate Command would be the current replacement to the XL21 with a few upgrades like LED lights and an endurolife belt, the Elevate Conquer would be the next step up with a swivel neck. Riccar Supralite is a great machine as well, slightly less refined overall but will generally deep clean better than the Oreck machines but not by a giant margin. Sebos are great machines but it would be a pretty big departure from an XL21 even their lightest machine is going to be around twice the weight, though you do get the benefit of having tools on the machine. I'd decide how important the weight of the machine is first, that'll direct you to either Oreck/Riccar or Sebo. Outside that I'd try to get hands on with both a new Oreck and Riccar often times it'll just be user preference in the way the machines feel that makes the difference.

@@FantomLightning . I actually purchased a U2000RB-1 and noticed right away it was a downgrade so I returned it. It was So loud, thinner tube and just felt a bit bare bones. I was just looking at the Elevate command online.

There was someone selling NOS machines on eBay when I purchased mine. I'm not sure if they have any listings any more or not.

My grandma bought a new XL-21 in 2006. When she passed in 2012, I got it and kept it for 4 years. One day I decided to trade it in for a Miele S7 Salsa and I have no regrets. I did like this machine, but after a few years, it became a piece of crap. One thing that it lacked was agitation. I also have a Bissell Momentum. I decided to trade the Oreck in, because it didn’t do well on our shag carpet. Whenever I bought the Miele, I tested out the Riccar Superlite entry and it outperformed my top of the line Oreck. I’ve used a classic Oreck too and I like them better than the XL-21. I personally do like Oreck, but they’re meant for low pile carpet and I do agree that they sound and look better than the Tacony Uprights

All depends on which Royal model. Royal has had some light weight machines without tools that are basically identical. Otherwise all other Royal machines will clean better, especially the metal body Royals.

This exact model no, at least if you're looking for new. The near identical machines to this if you are looking for new would be the Oreck Forever Gold, last I checked there were still a few left NIB on eBay. Also the Oreck Axis has NIB stock left some places including Amazon I believe, the Axis has the upgrade of a swivel to the machine. In the current line that's still being sold you'd be looking at the Elevate Command and Conquer models are both mechanically related to the XL21s design.

What scent tabs work because I tried those enviro care scent tablets and those didn’t work I couldn’t smell anything? I’m really looking for vinilla scents

@@user-ds5xd1ug9c I haven't found any scent tabs that really work well outside of the Oreck ones and the ones Hoover made that were disconnected years ago. Out side of that there are also small scent sticks that may work.

What about carpet deodorizer, which is the best one to use, I looked at glade and carpet fresh and I saw a vinilla scent one, the reviews on some of these are just ok

You should replace to original two sided fan housing cause those were known to crack very pre-maturely. Get the single molded updated fan housing design. Far far surperior design. In fact oreck corp put out a service memo for the service centers to replace all the two piece fan housing on all XL21 models when they came in for their annual tuneup due to the defective design.

Yes, the brushroll on these generally is powerful enough to pull the machine along.

John Smith my oreck axis has two speeds but it moves on it's own when it's running on high in the upright position does your XL21 do that?

@@ashtonbrown3245 no mine doesn't, but I also have the original white bristle brushroll in it. Today I ran over something and it sounded kind of hard. Idk if I chipped anything or not. Runs fine but powering it down it makes subtle different sound

All the forever series and platinum pilots and even some of the first generation golds had the shit off sensor. But FYI don't put the enduro life synthetic belt on the XL21 models. This belt is actually just barely two tight and causes the main housing to warp and eventually cause the fan to burn into the fan housing. All Oreck's work better with plastic pulleys. The metal ones work fine they just cause the belts to run hotter and makes the start to constantly squeal on the forward movements. But don't use the enduro life belt. The housing on the models that came with the enduro life belt are built better and reinforced to compensate for the housing warping. The XL21 housing were not given the same reinforcements.
