Casting big spinners off the rocks is one of our absolute favorite fisheries. Coho and Chinook Salmon start moving in with the fall rains, and the fish start to get all caught up in the bay.
Usually we get to put in some solid time out there, but this year things have been busy and these days have been fewer than we wish, but all the sweeter when they're good.
We got joined by some of the NWK crew, and a few fish made for a super fun day.

When I fish off certain sport fishing boats here in Cali the deckhands carry air soft rifles and shoot at the seals that try and steal peoples fish.

Brutal watching you fish the bay on that low tide...upriver about a half mile is a sandbar that is much better at low tide. I LOVE casting spinners from those shores--moving to Michigan, so this was my last go round. Did get 2 chinook this season, nothing big but totally a kick. 14 coho, one chum, lots of missed fish this season. I hate those seals.

You would be surprised at some of the fish caught at lowtide. Definitely not as many but the ones you hook are always solid

@@ThatPNWLife Absolutely, and such a surprise. It was all kiped up and this weird green color--I didn't know what to think. It was clearly a native fish so I released it. Great fight, with runs almost Chinook-like, but a surface fight like a coho; no jumps but lots of sloshing. Around 36"...

No, not at all. But I go by water depth. I run 3/4 until the water is deep into the tide. But sometimes the fish just like a smaller presentation. Hope that helps

That was considered a jack coho salmon (15-20") and even jack coho must be clipped to keep.

How do you know if they are clipped or not, which part of the fish must be clipped in order to keep it?

In Oregon, the adipose fin will be clipped. In is one of two fins on top, the small fin infront of the tail will be missing if it's a hatchery coho.

How come you guys fish off the wall and not the actual jetty, I’m just curious, is it better?

Yeah , So long story short, due to the shape, the fish kinda get trapped in the bay there, and do a couple circles before continues up river, gives you a shot a larger school multiple each time it passes by you... In theory the fish out by the Jetty are still milling around a bit , but are continuing to cruise up river.., If you look at a overhead shot of the whole bay you and can kinda see how the south part of the river shoots straight across and gets cut off by the rock wall there, the fish often end up kinda getting lost and turned around for a minute.., We cast spinner off of the jetty too sometimes , but usually just when trying to combo Jetty fish. It's also a lot harder to land a big nook out on the Jetty.

Hey, I fished next to y’all this day. Do y’all have any video footage of me losing the salmon to the seal? I was the one who walked all the way around the bay, on the beach and onto the jetty to get my salmon, but the seal won after about 5 minutes.

I would hardly call it harassing. They didn't mind mind much. I could see where you were coming from if they were all standing up and trying to get away. As soon as the bull we did get near became irritated, we stopped

Just for what it's worth, the drone isn't nearly as close as it looks at all, I zoomed things in quite a bit... Also I was looking for some to ask about it but didn't see anyone at first, but just after shooting this I saw and ask a ranger if I was allowed to be flying and film there, and he did tell me No, but he said that if I just stopped then and didn't fly another pass it wasn't a issue. I figured why let the awesome footage go to waste. But the Elk really didn't seem to mind the drone at all...

We just go off the rule of thumb of not saying the name, we film it though. So if you have been there, you already know, and there is no need to say the name. When the salmon are in, they are most likely in all the bays. The north gets fish first and is sort of works it's way south until they are all full

There are a few I definitely keep hush hush but for the most part I don't care about the name. Some consider it selfish but some know the journey it took to get to it. I'm definitely all for the family fishing vibe and would gladly give places to fish if need be. I agree with your statement

I think it's fine to give location by pm, but a lot of spots are too small to broadcast to everyone.
