I grew up about a mile or so from that Santiam river spot. So many places in that area to go swimming or fishing, and you can catch crawdads with your bare hands! When I was a boy scout growing up we used to earn money for the troop by giving out free coffee at that rest stop and taking donations. We had a little camp trailer with a small TV and a Super NES. I once spilled hot coffee on a Canadian Scout master by accident. Our troop loved to go camping so we went on trips just as a troop and we would go to a few bigger events during the year. Scoutmasters from other troops were always impressed by the matching tents we had. Paid for by all those weekends giving out free coffee.

That is awesome. I was a boy scout in my early days when it was cool for the kids. Now, youth bury there noses on their phone. Sounds sad. LOL

I stop at the rivers all the time when traveling from WA to OR I always stop by Cowlitz and Lewis and ofcourse going back up. thanks for sharing!

Taking the summer off work and planning to spend it road tripping around Oregon. While I do love trout, being from Alberta I'm actually more excited about catching species we dont have up here... bass, catfish, pan fish, and hopefully some surf perch.

You'll love panfish fishing in Oregon. Small mouth in main rivers and big mouth bass is slower waters, lakes etc. GL

As a former truck driver traveling along the I-5, I, too, have admired those who are able to stop and fish those beautiful rivers. Now that I'm retired and on a fixed income, I'll have to see if I can afford a road trip like this. Sure looks like my type of fun! 😊👍

I've crossed many rivers along interstates. Finally, I decided to do it. Key is having a fishing license in that state. Thanks for the comment.

I wish I saw this 10 years ago, I was traveling from S CA to PNW once a week ,I always thought about doing this, just never got around to it. there are also spots in CA and WA. I also was driving 18 wheeler, I think i still could have pulled it off in some spots. Thanks

Ok santiam. Anything peach with prawn or bobber a jig in peach or light pink. Also egg patterns... Kind of early though.for the steelhead but august Sept. It's game on.

Great info for everyone Gary. Thanks for sharing. The rivers closer to me do well during those months too as a I am downriver on the Willamette. Do you know if they fin clip steelhead for Santiam? I know coho they don't.

If you fly fish the UMPQUA for.steelies greenbutted skunks and crane prairie specials are hot on that river.

Do you fish trout west of the boat ramp there? I know some people tell me flyfishing is pretty good there too.

@@BackFishing I've never fished the myrtle. But Thomas creek yes! Even volunteered at the hatchery.... Mill creek always it ran in the back of our football field at North Salem High. Willamette was only 5 blocks from the school as well. The rogue, Deschuttes and the santiam.. and especially the santiam I can tell where when and what as to the santiam and I'm more than 90% confident you'd bang either a Chinook or steelhead out of the river. And I'll say sweet home is popular spot,

Yeah the Coquille river is full off small mouth bass that are causing problems for salmon and stealhead they eat eggs and smelt sadly the Coquille river is geting pretty bad they are destroying the system. They make good tocos 😊
