Genau so muss die sechste von Widor gespielt werden: Zügig vorwärts und mit "kräftiger" Registrierung. Monsieur Latry spielt auch hier meisterhaft, besser geht es nicht, vielen herzlichen Dank.

Played this as my opening piece in my first “professional” recital at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in about 1990. I can’t believe I was so stupidly naive to open with a difficult work, but if only I’d played it with any flair like this! Definition of spirited and interpretative performance if ever there was one!

When I was 12 years old (55 years ago) I saw/heard this performed live at Dr. Joyce A. Schemanske's Bachelor of Arts organ recital at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. I have never seen nor heard anyone else ever perform it. This piece was so masterfully executed in this video that I had chills through all of it. What a thrill to have found it on KZfaq. Congratulations and thank you to everyone responsible for making this available.😮

KZfaq, especially for us organ music lovers, is what we needed, what we expected. And nothing, absolutely NOTHING, can replace it. It is impossible to imagine having access to so much music, so many instruments, so many musicians, so many recordings of such quality, by any other means. If we didn't have KZfaq, what would we listen to? Boring and overly formalized CDs, filled with the same old songs? Today, this fabulous means of sharing allows us to open our horizons in an incredible way: to know and appreciate the breathtaking technical mastery of *Olivier Latry* , to meet the new wave led by *Gert van Hoef* , to explore (and explode) the limits of our instrument with the rewritings of *Jonathan Scott* , have access to the extroardinary and invaluable library of recordings of *Frédéric Munoz* , listen to the exploits of *Leo van Doeselaar* of the NBS ( *Netherland Bach Society* ) channel. And even hearing, here or there, an amateur playing a piece that we would never, ever have the joy of listening to "live". Because quite simply, in a church, there are things that we don't play, and that we never will play. Dare I say it? Without KZfaq, I would have missed out on extraordinary songs and musicians my whole life. *This* organist, and *this* piece, particuliarly. Today I cannot spend a week without coming here and play the tune. Thank you Olivier, thank you KZfaq, thank you the 21st century for making it possible. _It's a good day to be an organ lover today._

Not only this man is excellent in his art, but he's also very classy - and some say he's beautiful too (but that is purely a matter of taste). The most impressive remains the fact that he uses any score ; all from memory! When one knows the difficulty to play such an instrument, extended by the difficulty to play such a piece, extended by the pressure to be filmed during the performance, this is just incredible. I would give an arm to get 1/10° of his ability - which would be stupid: imagine playing the organ with one unique hand :)

Latry's playing is a splitting image of Dupre's extent recording of this, especially the beginning. The only difference is that Latry's seems just a little faster and connected than Dupre's deliberate, more demonstrative playing. Excellent recording outside of the lagging video. Exciting technique as well.

The key action from Positif is purely mechanical, as is the Pedal. Grand-Orgue and Recit are mechanical with Barker machines. All couplings are electric. Sound and Video were recorded separately due to the fact that the camera is placed next to the pedal reeds and our external microphone wasn't working. The processed video is absolutely in synch, but i was not able to get it right in youtube.

The console is detached, but the connection is mechanical. Moreover, the console sits directly in front of the main case. I guess the synchronization is a classical KZfaq issue. As concerns this video - turn off the sound, and it is still music all over! Look at his smooth and effortless movements. The music just flows through the man. (Or of course close your eyes and marvel at the music he plays.)

not quite mechanical - it was originally pneumatical. then you have a natural "delay" between pressing the keys and receving sound - slight, but delay. now the tracture is electric and you have almost no delay. so probably video delay is inherent to youtube or video processing.

So, my German is good enough for me to understand this, but not for me to reply. Komisch, oder? Naja, isn't it possible that the synchronisation issues are to do with the position of the console? If the camera and microphone were at the console, and if the console is detached - which is how it looks - there would be a slight delay in the sound reaching the console in a large church. I had a go at Redcliffe once, and the delay was off-puttingly lengthy!

Could Widor have possibly been influenced by Saint-Saens? This sounds a lot like Saint-Saens's "Organ Symphony". I guess it's likely considering they were both French composers living in the same time period.

Widor reportedly wrote this piece in 1885 (but it was published three years later), one year before Saint Saëns finished his 3rd symphony. Then again, Widor kept on changing his work, so who knows.

Why Latry always play in hurry like he need to get his train? If to compare with Roth, Van Oosten or Brooks, they almost play as being in love with the instrument that sort that imposant sound because of their fingers . Latry plays as if he want to finish and run away, without any feelings to the instrument and the master who built it.
