@jcdenton2187 4 жыл бұрын
@@petrutorlac7840 I disagree on the storyline aspect for the most part, I find it fairly interesting and optional enough. You can skip cutscenes from the start if you don't care. This also is pretty minor, but I disagreed with Yahtzee that Doom 2016's demon design was a bit flat and unclear. They did a good job balancing badass and horror-esq while keeping each demon easily recognizable at a glance. I friggin loved the Mancubus and Cacos. I have to agree though that having the game lean further into goofy arcade shooter territory AND fairly-serious story territory is a huge disconnect, however. And my biggest issue with the story... What the hell (ha) happened between Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal? But goodness the gameplay. It's so unfocused and overfull of stuff it feels more like they threw every new mechanic they could think of in an attempt to not get stale, when really only one or two of those additions would have been enough coupled with good level design. They tried too hard to "Keep it fresh" and lost the relative simplicity of Doom 1, Doom 2, and Doom 2016. It is complexity for complexity's sake. Fine enough game on its own, but bad as a Doom game, and definitely bad as a sequel to Doom 2016.

This game is one of the rare examples of how simplicity can be elevated to completely new levels by some external factors. In this case, is the soundtrack - seriously, whatever the studio/Microsoft paid Gareth Cocker to write the music for this game, it should've been twice as much because he took the plain (almost boring) and overused cliche of a tiny small child-animal in a big and scurry world and elevated it to a whole new level. Music dictated the tone of the game, it painted feelings, relationships between characters... when you fought a heroic fight with big ass monster the music portrayed both your heroism of fighting that monster but also gave a massive scale of how big and scurry the monster is. The game itself is pretty good, but if you add truly the awesome soundtrack it had... it's something truly different.

Like the previous comment says, he never said he liked the actual story throughout the game. I am not sure if he ever adresses that. What he likes is that the world has a history and he has to discover that history. In Ori, you could swap these forests and you wouldn't see a difference. In fact, I think you can even put some of Ori 2 cutscenes in Ori 1 and no one would see the difference.

SUre you kill some big powerful dudes, but so what? I haven't really played Ori but I think that I get the exact "issue" with it, or at least what rubs Yahtzee the wrong way about it. All of his memeing on the fact that it's "Another small child in scary world game" game kinda points to a deeper issue that the emotional path that Ori went down is something that we've seen a wide array of times... And that trying to milk it out with a sequel that hits that same emotional core ends up ringing more hollow than the original. (Which might just be the fact that Will of the Wisps had Microsoft Money behind it)
@Chinesetakeout382
@Chinesetakeout382 4 жыл бұрын
It’s probably just personal preference to me, but Ori was a nearly perfect game in my eyes. I couldn’t bring myself to hate anything about the game and it’s reliance on visual and musical storytelling for the emotional bits are some of my favorites in any storytelling medium. Will of the wisps did most of that but better. (In my definitely biased opinion) (Im going to assume that you’ve all played both games) Both games villains, while being just owls on the surface really changed the way I see some toxic people online and in real life. Kuro did kill a lot of spirits and removed that ball from the tree, but that’s because of the fact that it killed most of her kids, only being redeemed by an understanding between mothers. Shriek strikes fear into that entire land and killed a baby owl, but she hatched to dead parents and was ostracized by the other owls. She decided to spend her last moments searching for the love she never got. It’s what made me think about the the toxic person on the other side of the screen more or class jerk. You can’t just be toxic back because you can’t solve anything that way. I will never forget what the first game taught be back in high school when it came out, and I won’t forget how it reminded me now.

ngl i think he may be a bit self-important as well. he plays dark souls and loves it despite the entire game being about "light vs dark" and then bashes ori for that very thing. what i have the feeling is the truth, is that he just feels less childish playing a game that pretends to be more than it actually is story-wise, and can't avoid feeling pandered to when a game instead doesn't play around with the simplicity of the premise and instead enhances the good aspects of it with artful visuals and music. things that he's probably very used to overlooking all the time, possibly for a lack of knowledge in the matters. he is a writer and a programmer mostly, so that's what he talks about. ori is not about story at all.

And then "Oh, it's another owl that is just evil, but actually not and I am now supposed to feel sad about him." I like the gameplay, but like Yahtzee I find the story really boring and since they even added more cutscenes, it was even more annoying. Especially when they show the family that starts in the beginning travelling to you. So wait? I am exploring several different areas, fight bosses, collect the wisps and build up a whole settlement and they are still so slow they only arrive at the end? Why even show me that then in the first place?

A lovely fun game of good quality with a soundtrack trying to make it feel significantly more epic which isn't a bad thing, but it starts being more apparent how basic written some of those epic moments are when you're reading over the details of them in text format

So basically they did that sequel thing you mentioned in one of your other reviews (I think it was Dark Souls 2 or 3) where they didn't use the original as a springboard and instead wallowed around in the original instead. Sounds like they missed a potential opportunity to have the owl as a primary focus to get through the levels which is disappointing.
@KanaiIle
@KanaiIle 4 жыл бұрын
The thig is, all the abilities the owl has Ori gains anyway. The game is still an excellent platformer with a head-spinning arrangement of movement options, and the one core thing they improved over the first game is the combat system, which is a lot better, especially in how it integreates with the movement. Zipping around the screen like a flourescent flubber and smashing enemies with a giant hammer is quite the blast.

Actually they did a lot differently. It honestly seems like he barely got through the game, and never talked to any of the npcs or went for optional tasks. The game has plenty of substance if you actually play it. What about that Moki father that finds out his family is dead when you tell him, and then straight up goes to die with them. He conveniently left that bit out. Also, Shriek (the Owl) is prominently featured in several areas, and has several interactive segments compared to Kuro in the last game. This entire video just feels like cherrypicking.

Very dead honest review. Accurate, like holy shit this game can be fucking fantastic and then like 30 minutes later I'm banging my head on my desk because of how frustrating that one time trial race quest thing was. Yeah the story is a lot more shallow than blind forest's story was too. Still though, amazing game to be in awe in for 2 hours, leave in frustration and then come back to give another crack at it. Highly recommend it, really, worth it.

Not surprising the sequel would lack creativity considering the original had none. The items were glowing lights, the enemies were glowing lights, the hazards were glowing lights, the scenery was glowing lights, & the challenge was a combination of figuring which glowing lights to touch & figuring out how to get past a part where you have to get past a sea of spikes but they're all off screen & either there's no platform to reach or it's even further off screen. I never figured that part out.

I feel like a lot of big multiplatform games these days haven't been good with the UI for using all the damn tools and moves and things that they give you, so if you want to try a bunch of different things, you gotta do a lot of reassigning things in menus and you better be ready to reassign things back if they don't work. I'm sure there's some great things in there that I'm not using, but they're lost in a whole forest of options.

I thinks attacks assign to 3 buttons address a problem a lot of people have with the first one. Too Manny abilities and bottom presses to remember. People forget other skills they have very easily. And lets be realistic, Hollow knight become the new base but all it core aspects have been done already. Not necessarily because hollow knight has it means it was taking as base. And if it does Ori traversal movement is much more expanded and worked on. Hollow knight is more directional, (up, down, left, right) while or is much more multidirectional with Angles and curves

Excuse you! You team up with Ku twice! But really, this game is awesome. It's those fast paced platforming while being chased that's so much fun to me. The combat is fun even if you have to pause to switch out moves. I know this is your style of review, but if you paid attention you would know that the big owl is scarier because of the 'darkness' which is corrupting everything. It's more then "dark is bad" because we see what its doing. Her egg gets corrupted, basically deforming her. Ku's wing is deformed. Anyone who stays in the 'darkness' to long turns to stone. And The ending once it's all done parallels the start of the first which is always fun. The game is a great platform rpg hybrid. And while the story isn't original it puts a cute spin on things. Contrasting the darker side of things with pockets of joy around the world.

I feel the same about Superhot. Incredible, super fun gameplay, especially in VR. But if you factor in the "story" and what it's trying to say as an art form, god fucking dammit is that game pretentious. I wish it was just a contextless arcade-mode fun thing if it was going to be so far up it's own ass with the narrative. That fucking "contact your friends with this phrase: it's the most innovative shooter you've ever played in years!" ending REALLY pissed me off.
