As a Japanese, I think it's a very realistic and fun video. Nishinari is the largest slum in western Japan, and many Japanese do not bother to visit. But it's not because it's dangerous, it's just not necessary. It's not even a hidden town. It is difficult to narrow the gap between rich and poor, but improvement is progressing.

We live in Scotland. From what I've watched it's not a bad area, there are far worse in Scotland. I grew up in one of the areas as a teenage kid. High crime, drugs and attacks on other people. Saying that people in these poorer areas tend to be better towards others than many of the rich I have worked with. The more money they have the more it is about them rather then their neighbours. Japan has always been a country on my list to visit. I would prefer areas similar to how I grew up, put money into those areas rather than the usual tourist nonsense

I'm glad that you say the gap is improving/progressing. In the US the gap between rich and poor is growing ever wider, with a tiny percent of the population holding wealth and the MAJORITY of Americans either completely living in poverty or else living in fear of falling down. Our middle class has shrunk to the point where it basically doesn't exist anymore. Especially when it comes to young people - they can't pay they're college debts because good paying jobs are gone, we have a service or gig economy with people earning minimum wage, which isn't a living wage. Young people can't afford to buy houses and many do not even have kids because they can't afford to. And the elite class of government officials only pursue policy that benefits wealthy corporate campaign donors, not the public good, not the needs of the people. There are sociological studies conducted by universities like Stanford showing that this is true -- that political policy reflects the wishes of corporate elites, not the will of the people. And both political parties are complicit, neither on is better than the other.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) --------------------------

It's pretty wild how some people just have no idea about how potentially dangerous this place could be, if you're not really street savvy. Being a New Yorker, this doesn't look nearly as bad as to what it COULD really be, but I think the appeal of the affordability and easy access to tourist attractions is what's bringing foreigners to the area. I hope Japan will see this as an opportunity to assist these people instead of ignoring them.

Compared to the United States, this place is a hundred times safer and cleaner. Whole neighborhoods are senselessly devastated or burned down, or there are wild shootings. The slums in Japan cannot be compared to those in the USA. Western views of a 3,000-year-old culture are always fallacious. The west and its culture left a very negative influence on the culture there. Many Western tourists often have no idea about the culture there in Japan and behave like it, too often hurting the feelings of the Japanese. We in the West should therefore be very cautious and very careful with any judgements.

Thank you Anming for another tour to show us another Japanese slum. I’m really glad that the people you met in this area were a lot more nicer compared to that gentleman from the first area & that you made unexpected friends which is really great. Super sweet that your husband was just messaging you for your safety. I am from a ghetto area in Los Angeles so I know I have seen my shares of interesting stories happening in my area though, it has gotten better here & there past couple of years. For sure those areas look really tamed compared to where I live at in the States. Nice touch in letting foreign tourists about this place that they mostly have no idea about

Most tourists (even locals) didn't know about the history of Nishinari (Kamagasaki). Majority of the area are already gentrified (new Hoshino resort was recently built in the area). Thanks for making this video, I lived in Nishinari and it's not as dangerous as it used to be. Honestly, its history is so rich especially during the early labor social movements in Japan that it's a shame to totally wipe it out of people's collective memories. The homeless people there also don't really bother other people. It's also a crime to beg on the streets so even though they are homeless, many of them still make a decent way of living (collecting cans and bottles, construction, etc.). And Nishinari-ku is quite big. The area where most homeless are found are near Shin-imamiya/Dobutsuen-mae/Tobita area. But the other areas are not bad. Cheap houses and convenient location (most areas are connected to a train station or bus).

For a slum area it still looks pretty good. Sweden has some slum areas, but they are filled with crime and drugs (it's also a no go zone), so I usually do not recommend tourists to go there for their own safety. But I'm surprised they are so friendly in Japan in the slums.

Hi. I have visited Osaka 3 times already and I always stayed close to Shin-Imamyia station. Never had any issues with hotels and never felt scared (or even feared) or sensed any lack of safety in the area. It is close to Abeno Harukas, has lots of train and subway options and it's barely 45 minutes away from KIX. Yes, I have seen homeless people (and in other cities in Japan) but they never posed a threat. I believe that foreign are just seeing these advantages and don't really care about the neighborhood's fame from (a distant it seems) the past.

Anming makes another journey into the unseen world of Japan's homeless, but this time in Osaka. As usual your attitude and style combined with your proficiency in Japanese, cause people to willing interact with you. Thus you are able to gain access to a world that most people simply don't notice. As you indicated it is not really hidden, but the average tourist would walk past it not realizing what they are actually seeing. I only spent a couple days in Osaka and I may have been one of oblivious tourists who didn't comprehend, what they were really seeing. Quite bluntly hidden in plain sight. Your ability to interpret what you are viewing and learning about an issue that most cities and governments never really want to confront, and definitely don't advertise. Thanks for this peak behind the curtain of another aspect of life in Japan.

Thank you for exploring the streets of Nishinari. Its one of the most dangerous places in Japan, definitely not a night city to go alone but during the day its not that bad you will see friendly faces almost everywhere. 5:58 That park (Haginochayaminami or Triangle Park) is one of the greater areas in Nishinari, that guy was definitely a good person bringing you there to meet new people. it's pretty close to where I worked in Abeno and honestly it never gave me bad vibes in general. Glad you could spread information about Japans ups and downs :)

@@OrientalPearl Sometimes that park will hold events like local concerts during festivals and it's awesome around then, but any other night it's empty with a few homeless people sleeping in the open sober or drunk. During covid a lot of tents ended up being pitched inside the park so it's nice to see it looking better already that's for sure. It's also one of the safest spots in Nishinari ward since police officers patrol around that park quite often making it a haven for the community, anywhere else and its definitely not safe from what I was told from locals. Overall though I spent most of my time there during daylight hours and have found the nicest people who want to drink and chat with just about anyone.

I'm staying here in Nishinari for a long period and I'm going out at any time of the night. At first I was wary because of the reputation but now I just don't understand. I never saw anything fishy and I would go at 2am to the konbini without a second thought. I see young women and families walking around after dark as well. I'm staying there because it's cheaper since no japanese want to be here, I guess most tourist does as well because it's more likely way safer than where we came from. I mean, who is scared of homeless people?

I think these kinds of places with bad reputations are interesting. I lived many years in the heart of what is considered basically the ghetto or the wrong side of the tracks. Lots of gangs, and crime. I've heard so many bombs go off that I don't even react to one anymore. I was never scared. The same with my brother who lives in a house that was bombed, raided and shot at. Being afraid is a valid emotion, but it's also pointless. Nishinari is propably safer than most places around the world. You still need to be weary of your surroundings, especially at night. But that goes to every place. Just be observant of your surroundings and be smart and you'll be safe, regardless if it's downtown Detroit or Nishinari or the suburbs of Stockholm. These documentary style videos really show the real side of Japan and are important. Stay safe and give Tommy a hug, poor guy has been worried sick.

Even now, there are a lot of strange people in the Airin area, but they rarely cause problems or get involved in incidents. It is the dirtiest and most homeless city in Japan. That is a fact. It is also said to be unsafe and dangerous. But that is not true. Even if a woman walks alone at night, she is unlikely to be in danger. The only thing you will see is an occasional fight between drunken old men. Young people have recently begun to visit the area, as it is known for its low accommodation costs and many extremely cheap and delicious restaurants, in spite of its easy access to tourist attractions.
