Hello Friends!
In this video I'll show you how I made this incredible, yet pretty simple Origami Cake.
I am a fan of contrast in cake design - black & white, textured & smooth, classy & contemporary. Since I decided to make the bottom tier black, I used dark chocolate ganache (because it's much easier to color into black than buttercream); however, you can definitely use buttercream for this decoration.
As a cherry on top - I used a wafer paper Hibiscus. If you haven't seen it yet, you can find the template and instructions in this video: • Wafer Paper Hibiscus

Hey! Loved the outcome❤️ One question, did you make the ganache only out of chocolate and butter in the ratio of 2:1 or you added cream as well? Love from India.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I've been to India a few years ago - it's very beautiful country with unique culture and art! Hopefully, I'll visit it again after the pandemic. For this cake I used only chocolate and butter: however, chocolate and cream will work well as well. Basically, any recipe of chocolate ganache (that becomes very hard in the fridge) works great for this decoration.

Hi! This cake is absolutely amazing. Do you know what size cakes that you used for the top and bottom tier? I like the height and dimensions of your cake.

Thank you so much for your kind comment! ❤️ It was a small cake. I used 4” cake in diameter for top tier and 6” cake for the bottom tier. Since the tiers are very small, and the ganache I used for the bottom tier is very stable, there is no need for additional support and structure.

Thank you so much. ❤️ Can you please share the brand name, size and type of double sided tape you used to stick parchment paper. Also which store did you get it from? It's my hubby's birthday this week and I want to recreate this cake. But nothing seems to stick on the parchment. Thanks you. ❤️

Thank you so much for your nice words! I’m happy you liked the tutorial! ❤️ Unfortunately, I don’t remember the brand of the tape, but I bought it from Home Depot. I know what you mean about the tape not sticking very well to the parchment - I had this issue as well, and it took me some time to get a feeling of the parchment and the tape working together just enough to make the folds and the decor. The parchment will unstick sometimes, but it should be easy to put it back at the same place and continue the decoration. You can use smaller stripes of parchment and try flatten the parchment first as well, so it will stop curling and be easier to handle. Hope, this helps! ❤️

It depends on the proportions of heavy whipping cream and chocolate. It the ganache doesn’t become hard when refrigerated, it won’t work for this decoration. Also, whipped ganache has air bubbles, and it might affect the final look of the cake.

Great question and it’s hard to answer it 🙂 Traditional recipe of ganache consists of just chocolate and heavy cream. However, nowadays, with so many new recipes being developed, in my opinion, the definition of ganache becomes much broader (some people add glucose syrup, some - butter, some - fruit purée, some - even add water to make ganache for drips).

I noticed you measured your cake as 47 cm. So how many templates did you make for total length of the cake or do you just double the initial measurement of 47cm?

It depends on how wide would you prefer the folds to be. For this cake I used 2.5 templates.

Yes, this ganache is very stable, and works great for origami technique.

Could you pls advise if there is any other frosting which could be used instead of ganache ? (American butter cream is not an option)

Any frosting that becomes hard in the fridge will work great as well (for example, Swiss merengue buttercream). However, if you’d like it to be colored in black, I recommend to use chocolate buttercream because it requires less food coloring.

I used cardboard and covered it with parchment paper, so it would be easier to remove it from the cold cake. Yes, I divided the circumference by 3; however, I used 2.5 templates (I like the look of wider triangles slightly better, but you might prefer the design with narrower triangles).

I used dark chocolate and butter. It will be easy to color the ganache with gel food colors without making chocolate to seize. You can definitely make the ganache as the mixture of dark chocolate and cream, but I would use different food coloring.

@@deltadeeps thank you so much for your kind words! ❤️ Yes, I used semi-sweet chocolate chips (but dark chocolate chips work great as well) and butter for the ganache. This ganache very stable, and works amazing for tiered cakes.

Do you mean to use it to make the flower? Unfortunately, sugar sheets don’t work for flowers. I make them using thin wafer paper.

No. This ganache is very stable, but it will melt if the cake will stay under the direct sun.

It’s a great question! Usually I let the ganache to sit at room temperature for a few hours to let it set. However, for this particular design I used it very soon after it was made (because I preferred this consistency). You can definitely add a heavy whipping cream into ganache (like 1:1 mixture of chocolate and cream). It will work great!

I don’t have a template that can be downloaded. There are instructions how to make a template on this timecode: 2:01 to 4:31. You might need to adjust the measurements according to your cake height. I would recommend to use thin cardboard and parchment paper to make a template.

I have ganache recipe in the video - I used 2 parts of dark chocolate and 1 part of butter (600g of dark chocolate and 300g of butter for the small cake I made).

I agree, this cake isn’t very fast and easy to make 🙂 The price for a similar cake depends on the area you live. Since the cost of living and cost of ingredients are different in every city, all bakeries will have different prices.

Yes, you can (I recommend the ratio of 1:1 or 2 parts of chocolate and 1 part of whipping cream). However, you might need to use different food coloring to color the ganache (chocolate might seize. You can try to color small amount of ganache with whipping cream to see if it works).

I used very thin cardboard. It’s usually is sold in craft stores with materials for scrapbooking and cards making supplies.

@@mashnajmi9764 I usually check out the section for card making or scrapbooking by myself and pick up cardboard or thick paper that I like and that looks comfortable to work with. I don’t know the exact name of it. Thick paper and cardboard are also sold in office supplies shops. Thick paper for posters will work great as well.

Sure! I drew the template on the cardboard (or thick paper) and placed a piece of parchment paper on top. I showed the process at 1:59 to 4:31 timeframe. You can make bigger or smaller folds depending on your liking.

You can make just vertical foldings. The pattern will be different, but very beautiful as well.

Sorry, if I understand the question incorrectly. I might get a wrong translation. You can make folds for the template as big as you would like, so it’s hard estimate how long the template should be. It depends on the width of the folds and the circumference of the cake.

It’s 2 parts of chocolate and 1 part of butter. I used 600 g of chocolate and 300 g of butter.

В данном случае шоколад выступает в качестве декора и базы для окрашивания в черный, и соотношение хорошее - покрытие остается стабильным, хорошо держит форму, не трескается,не деформируется в теплом помещении и хорошо окрашивается. Мне нравится использовать этот ганаш для покрытия некоторых видов тортов.

With trends and viral designs it’s impossible to track whose idea was in the beginning - you just see lots and lots interpretations on the same subject. People add something new, use different recipes and materials, add their personal touches to the designs, and it is not plagiarism. Take, for example, a “Number Cake” that was viral and trendy for a long time. Who came up with that idea? How many people modified and used that idea? Nobody knows. Moreover, if we think deeper on this subject, somebody came up with an idea how to assemble the cake or how to make tiered cakes. However, who did that? Why nobody mention their names? Same answer. Hope, I answered your question.
