This will be the final video in the 'VS' series where we compare an original pressing of an album, and compare it to the Remix/Remastered of the same album.
Which of the two do you prefer, and what is your personal favorite song off of this almost forgotten album?
I want to thank everyone who has watched these videos throughout the years. I can't believe it has been over two years since I made the first versus video. I hope to make new videos, but for now this will be the very last for the Original VS. Remastered.

This is honestly my favorite Megadeth Album. Liar is one of the meanest songs ever written by Dave. It may not have the guitar gymnastics of Rust in Piece but the songs are just full of angst.

When Dave redid Mechanix his mindset was to make a faster version of The four horsemen wanting to be known as a faster version of Metallica. So Dave was always highly influenced by Punk rock. With the Peace Sells line up and The Rust In Peace lineup Dave was surrounded by insane levels of talent and musicianship influencing Dave to write alot differently. On So Far So Good So What Jeff and Chuck were new members that probably didn’t influence Dave’s writing style that much in the short time that lineup remained together. So I always thought of So Far So Good So What as an early Dave Mustaine solo punk rock album instead of a typical Megadeth thrash metal album. Especially with the more raw and lower production value and the Sex Pistols cover.

It's almost scary how many Megadeth fans don't get this album. It's on a totally different planet to their other albums, as amply illustrated by the cover. The remaster just highlights how special the original production was in bringing this creature to life. Oh and your right... obviously it's the best.

I much prefer being able to actually hear the composition on the remaster.. I like the slightly clearer more roomy feel of the original the remaster pushes everything closer. I think there could be another which moves things back to their original positions in the mix.. But fixes the layering of them so that the snare can me turned down a bit so the guitars aren't eaten by it.. Generally I prefer the remaster because I can hear all the parts.. But I like the atmosphere of the original.

@@defaultdan7923 Yeah I think people are nuts preferring the original SFSGSW over the remaster. Everything sounds better on the 2004 version.. You can hear the guitar way better the drums are properly levelled as well as to not drill the snare in as the loudest thing on the album.. The sound of it being played in a tunnel is paired down and it sounds way more full and powerful.. The bomb exploding at the beginning of STWA has way more impact.. There were leads on the original that are completely buried.. You can barely hear them at all at time.. Then you listen to the remaster and you realise that there's entire solo sections we couldn't hear. Could a even better remaster be made of the album.. Probably.. People where pretty happy with the 2002 remix/remaster of KIMB.. But along comes the 2018 version and blows that thing out of the water in terms of quality of sound and beefiness. Holy shit does that thing do the job the 02 didn't.. Much like the remaster of SFSGSW did it highlighted so much hidden stuff entire buried riffs, solos and the drum track.. Wow oh wow does it really give people a new appreciation for Gars playing and the bar he set for those that followed. Wow. New light is one way to describe what that 2018 remix/remaster of their debut does. It's possible that could be done for SFSGSW at some point.. But who knows really.

The remix is actually crisper though sometimes certain parts get buried when others are only slightly clearer than before; it’s as dead as a doorknob taking that much reverb away and quantized almost as bad as Rust in Peace since you can’t line up all of them at the same time and some of the ones that can need the speed changed, but I wonder if the had DI tracks for the guitars since they usually had more gain on the original.

I always put off so far so good so what because I was scared it wasn’t gonna be as good as peace sells and Rust in peace. Man was I wrong, the tone, solos, riffs, Dave’s raspy evil voice. I fucking the album. Not one bad song. Idk how it went under the radar. Also the remaster sounds like The system has failed. I’ll pick the original since the reverb on Dave’s voice and drums is sick and the guitars sounds evil. But with the remaster is easier to hear certain things you couldn’t hear with the tinny distant sound from the original.

There's no doubt that the original mix is an "acquired taste". I tend to look at it through the lens of when I bought it on LP in 1988. It was very hard to listen to the album beyond track two on vinyl - most of us kids wouldn't have had top of the range record players in those days - which meant my favourite song on the album "Mary Jane" was almost inaudible as the grooves got tighter on the final tracks of each side. I remember thinking in 1988 when I first heard it thinking " aaaahh too much reverb", I can't hear anything properly, these guys have just "knocked this mix" out without really considering it's consequences. I remember thinking, this mix has devalued the bands credibility, it's a misfire. Put it right up against "Justice" which came out on a 2 record set, SFSHSW seemed very "lo-fi". Metallica's album actually sounded really modern at the time - ground breaking - the lack of reverb made the music more potent - it cut through. SFSHSW is my favourite MD album. I think the band would have benefited in 1988 from a more "modern" mix with less reverb - therefore the remix would have given the album a better shot at getting more traction in 1988. All this said - I am wedded to the 1988 version as it's so "out there" and probably because I listened to it so much and it reminded me of childhood. It's also the only MD album that truly fuses Punk, Metal & Classical, leaving behind the Metal, Classical and Jazz influences on Peace Sells with Gar. It's an absolutely fantastic album with Mustaine at his PEAK writing, playing and singing wise. I saw the band on this tour and they were truly a dangerous band and so good live - much more threatening, angry and vicious - and so unbelievably tight. A much more vital proposition live then Metallica at the time 88/89.
@tw19771
@tw19771 Жыл бұрын
The original mix isn't exactly an aquired taste, it's actually a pretty decent mix for what it was working with. Mustaine, who's responsible for the 2004 modernizing/ruining the early records said it himself that there was a ton of mistakes made on the album and thats probably why it was drenched in reverb. But besides that, its a solid mix. Done by people who have a sharp understanding of Rock n' Roll and Heavy Metal, and it's an understanding that has been completely lost in 2023. The Jazz influence was both a Gar and Chris thing. And I guess Gar did bring a little swing to the songs. But most of the songs were already worked out by the band before Gar and Chris came in. They had Lee Rauch on the drums then. Its just a shame Lee never got the recognition he deserved as a MONSTER drummer because that guy...was on another level. And I do think Gar gets undue credit for Lee's vision with those early songs. He even played an early version of "Set The World Afire" live. It was known as "Burnt Offerings" then. I remember Lee actually playing the intro to that song with a lot more flair and energy than Chuck did even. And yeah, I am well aware Testament has a song by the same name, both are different songs, but great songs. As for Chris, yeah he brought in some jazz influence to the solos, he seems a little bit like a jazz fusion player. He sorta reminds me of what Alex Skolnick is doing these days in Testament

If the remaster had been the original release I still would have loved this album but the og mix is still my favorite. Reason being some of the rhythms with the drums showed tight punches, in spots, but not so much in others, bass lines included. Vocal lines were not Dave's strong points but definitely had some bangers. Hook is fantastic along with my last words on peace. In conclusion, both mixes have potential points to be enjoyed the original still the best option. Video review, this is a great experience and thank you for giving us comparison. The editing is absolutely fantastic and professionally done. Hope Dave watches it. This album is awesome. Metal classic!!!

I’ve never really liked any of the 2004 remasters, since the original or the later remasters did a good job (countdown 2012, peace sells 2016 killing is my business 2018). Also another one i have the original 1988 european pressing of. Sound pretty good to me since they added a DMM system, which helps it gove a more crispier sound, and makes the dynamics come out more on the record.

The Peace Sells remaster was actually 2011 and it sounds almost like the original such as Countdown to Extinction; Rust in Peace is apparently available lightly remastered too, though the remix version is the worst one Megadeth did because of rerecording some things way more and programming the drums which had more reverb but compressed too much.

"So Far, So Good... So What" always gets overlooked in the Megadeth's oeuvre. I loved it when it was released, and saw them play these songs live opening for Iron Maiden. Yes, not the best drummer in the history of Megadeth (certainly no Nick or Dirk), but Dave (or "The Daves") were on fire on this one. Still in my top 3. Oh, and the original is way better than the remaster (as seems to be the case for ALL of the Megadeth remasters).

I agreed with pretty much everything except your take on Liar. While it's pretty much just a diss track, I'm a fan Poland's work (his Megadeth work in particular) yet i still like that song. I never would have thought of the rap comparisons on my own in a million years. It was only when I started seeing people online saying that when I realized the connection, otherwise I never would have thought of that, lmao. Not saying those comparisons are invalid, because I think they hit the nail on the head there. But still, I think the song has some creative/original sounding riffs, true to Mustaine's general style back then. I do enjoy the "rapping" part personally. Of course I'm a fan of early rap also, so that idea just doesn't bug me, even if we're talking in the context of metal. When it fits, it works. I'm coming from the position of a guitar player who can play all this kind of stuff, and lover of heavy electric guitar music in general. (I love death metal and the heavier styles in general) But to each their own, that's just my personal opinion.

This album to me represents a unique snapshot of the band's life at the darkest stage of their addictions, no longer fun and exciting like on the first two albums, but strung out and withdrawn.

Well I bought the remastered version for $40, the original was between $90-100 online lol. I’m sure the original version is better but I’m not one of those picky people. The remastered version sounds good to me cranked with my stereo setup! 🎸

Remaster has a bogged down sound in some places. It does sound cleaner in other spots but I'll take the crunchy original 😌 However you can get this album though, do it. Great one!

The Original soundest best becouse of the clarity of all the notes. When i heared it "remastered" guitar was just heavier with more basstone but the clarity dissapears alot, u cant hear the fine parts. I recommended the Original. "old school shit".

I love this album. No it’s not as epic as the albums before and after, but I think it has Dave’s BEST vocals!! Plus every song is completely distinct from the one before. Underrated and Awesome-

I agree, Dave reached the peak as vocalist here as well as in its related tour, listening to the bootlegs available around. After this album he won't be able to replicate the same performance...

Seems Dave had to play the entire songs again for the 2004 remaster. there are some parts missed or badly recorded on the original release. I still prefer the original mix.

Bit late on this, just been going through some of the 'deth classics. Have this t shirt. Was probably my fave thrash album at the time before Rust. But the horn part on the remastered is just total cringe! I actually switched it off and threw it away. KIMBABIG sounded better tho from the 2004 remasters..I need to check out the recent ones Still wear my SFSGSW t shirt with sneering pride..cos the world has gone to shit..

The remaster is like rehab version taking away the hazy drug flanged out vibe. It’s clearer but the intention is kind of lost and sounds squished w modern day compression. I do like the Rust in Peace snare replacement on the 2004 remaster but everything else is an atrocity especially replacing Dave’s bass in Take No Prisoners. Still I’m glad we have the option of what to listen to, I go back and forth every few years. Hopefully there won’t be a million versions like Black Sabbath catalog (still think the 2014 remasters sound better than 2016).

For me as a drummer if you played all from killing is my business to this album to rust in peace you whether you realized it or not you were getting quite a lesson in progressive metal and it really makes it easy to guess what was gonna happen on Rust in peace I don't Know if Dave intended to do that but if you could play this stuff you could keep up with Malmsteen albums and Racer X too so thanks Megadeth lol

The original mix hands down is superior. To this day, I cannot for the life me understand why they fucked with it. SFSGSW is my favourite of the first 4 albums, although I love them all. Jeff Young’s a pretty monster guitar player in his own right and was a good counterpoint to Mustaine, even though their relationship soured pretty quickly. Behler might not get a whole lot of accolades for his drumming… he’s definitely no Gar or Menza, but he is rock solid and capable fulfills his duties on the album. I liked the choices he made musically, even if they weren’t as flashy as his contemporaries. I could have happily heard a few more albums from this line up. As for the (original) mix itself, I know it’s a bit divisive among fans, but I also think sound-wise, this album really distinguished them from the big 4. It’s washy, effects-laden sound was not what the rest of the pack was doing, and I really dug that. In some ways, Megadeth has always sounded best to me when their mixes were a bit dirty… where some of the details are more felt, than heard. Excluding Rust in Peace, I felt Megadeth’s cleaner productions could sound a bit tinny and weak. Having that wall of sound on the first 3 albums (although each sonically different) just made them sound like a massive juggernaut to my ears. But hey, I know a shit ton of people will disagree for their own good reasons. Different strokes for different folks, right?

I only have two issues with the remasters. 1) Changing parts of the music. The horns at the start of Into The Lungs of Hell for example, and the absence of the vocal effect on Dave's vocal in the second verse of Set The World Afire, or the change of instrumentation at the start of Mary jane. WHY??? Just fix the sound and leave the music alone Dave! 2) I also think Chuck's drums need a little MORE reverb. It sounds like Dave took ALL the reverb out of the drums to the extent that they sound a bit lifeless and flat. They have a nice thick organic sound now... but they sound like they were recorded in a soundproof box. Let the drums breathe a little, man...

I love so far so good, I have a lot of critics about the remasters, sadly the sound of rust in, countdown and youthanasia suffer the remaster thing, there is no comparision with the originals, but I understand Dave wanted to re catalog the albums but, he touched too many aspects of the songs

The production on this album is actually very good. The vocals have a lot of cool effects and the guitars are super crunchy and well recorded along with the bass. The one weak point is the drums are just mixed strangely. While not terrible they sort of sit low in the mix and at the same time stand out weirdly. Every song they sound different. The worst is Mary Jane, the snare is just a mess on that one. But songs like Into The Lungs Of Hell, Set The World Afire, In My Darkest House and Hook in Mouth are some of Megadeth's best tracks and some of thrash metals best PERIOD. The remix sounds bassier and clearer. The horns on the remix ruin it for me, how could he have put them there and say, yeah that's it, now the song is perfect. Remixes always find a way to ruin the music. Changes are made that make no sense and even the "improvements" just make you reach for the original over it. It's like the Star Wars specials edition, every time Lucus changes something it makes you miss the originals that much more.
