HMONG MUSEUM
Hmong Museum is a new start-up 501(c)3 cultural organization in the Twin Cities established in 2013. It began as a passion project to bring Hmong history to life and preserve all things Hmong for future generations. As a museum without walls, the organization focuses on bringing rich cultural programming to community spaces. By 2020 the Hmong Museum plans to have a space and begin collecting Hmong art and objects.
Hmong Chronicles is a project aimed at reviving Hmong oral traditions through intergenerational collaboration with Hmong elders and Hmong American artists.

The original name for our clan is Qhua (Khuat) in Hmong Chinese. There were twelves original families. Unfortunately, the twelves original family names have nothing to do with the folk story. Today last names such as Lor, Yang, Vang, Her, Cha, Vue and etc... all were placed upon us by the Han Chinese (Suav). This is where the word "Xeem" came from. Han people use 'xing' aka xeem to identify family clan. Hmong from Yunnan, China continue to use Khuat/Qhua.. such as Khuat Hmaot, Khuat Tshib, Khuat Vus, Khuat Dluag.... these are our original surnames. Please do extensive research before making claims.

This is some pretty important information for us hmoob meka to know, thank you sharing but how do you exactly say "Khuat"? Is there a similar sounding word that might help?

Isn't qhua/khuat a vietnamese name? Hmoob use dong drum like muong in Vietnam too. I guess hmoob came from Vietnam? The Chinese calling hmoob barbaric tribes and fighting them refers to nanman and baiyue people as miao so they must be the same?Chinese fought baiyue and nanman for long timr. Ahmao miao people use khuat too. Maybe modern hmoob came from the outer most part of yunnan plains where ahmao people are?

Thank you so much for this video! My mother often retold a similar version of this story to me as a child, but as she has gotten older she doesn't recall much of it. Listening to this brings back the memories of my childhood!

Just to be clear the 18 clans are the ones who migrated from China to southeast Asia. There are more than just 18 clans for Hmong/Miao people.

No. Xeem is a Chinese word. Our Xeem (Xing) are Han Chinese (Suav). This folk story is wrong. The story of the great flood has nothing to do with Xing (Xeem).
