There are many that don't understand the situation and the repercussions to the cuban athletes that do this escape. The first thing people think is how evil the Cuban goverment, etc. In fact, I personally equate this to a soldier going AWOL. Get yourself AWOL and see where you end up. AWOL is when you leave the military without persmission and don't come back to serve. The Cuban Government invests heavily on these athletes. This is how they achieve superiority in sports. They are bread by the Cuban Goverment and is the investment of the Cuban Government, just like a US soldier is an investment of the US Government. So, when you see a Cuban athlete going AWOL, make sure you see a US soldier going AWOL before passing judgement. I think it's important because when you don't, you are predisposed to see life only one way, the one way you were brought up with. Also remember that US citizens without any family links cannot go to Cuba. You can be incarcerated and fined for such vacation venture-----where is the freedom in that? But when a country such as Cuba does it, become things categorized under oppresion, human rights violation and dictatorships. Go figure! I'm happy for the ball player. It's a life changing lifestyle for him and his family.
