In this video I shot the constellation of Orion with a stock DSLR camera and tripod without a star tracker. I then compare my Photoshop and PixInsight processing workflows.

I've watched a lot of your videos recently, and despite only having a very very basic knowledge of our galaxy and solar system, after watching some of your tutorials, i made my first cheap DSLR purchase today, im super keen to get out with my two young sons and start taking some pictures 😊

Some of my best memories are going out and stargazing with my dad when I was a kid! We spent a lot of time out in the country looking up at the stars.

Fantastic as always. You do a fantastic job at walking people through the various steps in the respective programs. There's a million and one things you can do with an image, but for anyone wanting to get the simple basics down I can't think of a better person to watch and learn from. I picked up Pixinsight as well a few months back and have no regrets at all. Did you ever start your own Patreon, by the way?

Hi, I've watched a ton of your videos and I find them hilarious and more importantly, very well thought out and informative. I have a Fuji XT-5 and have a 70-300 and a 16 1.4 lens. I've done some basic star trails and one successful milky way session. I'm considering a basic tracker and thinking about the red one you use, it looks compact and easy to use with a simple tripod and camera. Thanks again, I wish I lived in a darker place, lol.

Great video! I refuse to get a tracker until my astro shots are the best they can be without one. Those trackers are expensive and this forces me to learn the basics before I'm allowed to upgrade.

I agree! Get a few years in without a tracker. Then get a few with a basic star tracker. Finally you can graduate to a GOTO mount after you have paid your dues. It really helps you learn the night sky. I didn't start out doing deep sky astro without a tracker, but I did at least three years of nightscape astro without a tracker before I decided to level up.

Ive been using a non modified DSLR ( canon SL1 ) but just ordered a ZWO ASI294 MC PRO they're $ 100 off right now so I finally pulled the trigger.

Nice. Minor comment. It might be good to mention Bahtinov masks when focusing on a DSLR. I have found it very difficult to get the focus spot on without a Bahtinov mask (or software looking at the FWHM of each star). A for stacking on a MAC, obviously Starry Sky and Landscape Stacker are paid programs but SIRIL is free and you could simply stack your images.

on Barnards loop. I think thats how to spell it, try instead of selective color do hue saturation and the check the colorize box and add red to the area masked.

Absolutely brilliant as always Walt. I continue to learn so much from your tutorials. They are so easy to watch and I eagerly await every one of them. I’m not a PixInsight user yet but maybe one day! I’m finding Siril very useful together with PS and many of the plugins that you use. Do you know if the plugins are transferable to PI or do you have to buy them again?

You do NOT have to buy the plugins again! RC Astro will provide you a PI link for your plugins and you can just paste it into PI. The software will download and install the plugins for you from there.

I got a Z8 this year and tried to do some stacking in Deep Sky Stacker last week. Come to find out DSS will not recognize my RAW files from the Z8. I had to convert all them to DNG. Anyone know if/when DSS might be able to handle the Z8 files?

I used Life Pixel. I just got the Ha mod instead of the full spectrum mod. It was about $275. www.lifepixel.com/product-category/our-services/h-alpha-camera-conversion

I used a website called Life Pixel and got the Ha conversion. They did a great job!

If it's a ZWO ASI294MC Pro, lets us know about how your dealing with amp glow and if You have any problems with cooling. Considering getting one myself.

It is indeed! I haven't gotten to use it a lot yet, but amp glow was completely eliminated with dark frames. I didn't see any at all in my stacked image. I was able to cool the camera to -10C both inside and outside, so taking a dark library for winter time is my next goal with it. It'll be nice to not have to take darks every night now. Also I was using a very dark filter, so my flats and dark flats were 5 seconds long. No problems with those either.

oh question, is there a difference between ctl-alt-shift-E and just duplicating the layer with ctl-J when there is no mask or adjusment layer? Why do you do it that way?

When you aren't using a layer mask there isn't a difference. If there is a layer mask and you use Ctrl J you will only duplicate the layer with the mask and not the one below it it's interacting with. I prefer using Ctrl alt shift E every single time just to be safe. The only time you can't use that command is when you are duplicating the initial background layer.
