We play with all buildings, shuffled into stack 1 and stack 2. When you buy a building you can draw 4 and keep 1 from stack 1 or draw 3 and keep 1 from stack 2. We find that this keeps the variability up and adds some luck of the draw (for better or worse) but the big thing is that it really helps new players so they don't have to deal with the open information of all the buildings being available at once. Great game and definitely in my top 10 of 2014, so glad I preordered fro DLP and Reiner!

Cole Munro-Chitty i was thinking about something similar... basically copying the le havre setup of having all of them in the game, but in stacks, so you can see that if you want to get building a certain building, it's underneath 2 other buildings that must be bought first :)

Hey, everybody. I just looked up this game, and an all English version is currently on Kickstarter. I backed it to get the standard edition. There's also a deluxe edition available which adds metal coins and Belfort-like wooden tokens for only a little more. I thought quite a bit about getting the deluxe edition for its collectors' value, but I figured I would play all the value out of the game anyways. Am I the only one who knows about this? If you're going to buy the game in English, you should buy the English only version.

Watched everything, and now you have AGAIN perked my interest! Will be on the lookout for this, and with Hyperborea on pre-order it looks like the year of bag builders for me!

I so agree with your comment on the buildings. Any game that starts the same way every time makes me feel like people will always use the same strategy. I much prefer a game where, as you say, you're dealt with a puzzle at the beginning, that leads you towards a specific strategy customized to that particular instance.

The random removal of buildings is a good idea...I suspect expansions will add more buildings which will add the random setup which would make the game more replayable (ala Agricola All Creatures Big and Small)..

Yeah, I thought another solution for achieving randomness is to keep all the buildings, but only put out 3 or 4 at the start. Then when one is taken, another takes its place.

It looks like a game I'd enjoy as well, although I'm a little concerned about the interaction in the game. Besides the trading post board ( which I believe is kinde "glued" to the game ), is there competition for the buildings as well?
@rahdo
@rahdo 9 жыл бұрын
TheGrooves yeah, they're first come first served, and and depending on how the events unfold, there can definitely be "best choices" evolving over the course of the game. but like most deckbuilders, this game is pretty much a "tend your own garden" (except for grabbing all the best resources on the map, but in a 2p game that doesn't happen much. I can imagine with 4 players that there might be a bit more competition on the roads and rivers)

Rahdo, since the announcement of the Tasty Minstrel/American version of the game there's been some rumblings about poor component quality in the first edition. Just wondering whether you saw that, and if so, whether you think it might be better to wait for the American edition rather than buying the first edition.
@rahdo
@rahdo 8 жыл бұрын
+LettersofVerax well, the copy i demoed here was 1st edition, and it's fine for me. i suppose the tiles are a bit thinner than other games, but it's not impacted our enjoyment of the game at all. i guess if you have really sweaty hands, the cardboard tokens in the bag might start to wear after a lot of play, but even still i think it would be a *LOT* of play. and alternately, the stickers could come off the wood bits the same way of the TMG version? long story short, i'm happy with my 1st edition :)

For a higher player count, just don’t reveal half the building tiles. Reveal them as others get bought.

Rahdo checking back with you on this game, it looks like Orleans is now number 148 on your list. Seems like quite a fall from grace. Still one of my faves. I remember it ranking much higher previously, any reason why it's fallen so far?
@rahdo
@rahdo 4 жыл бұрын
i decided i'd given it an unfair bump because i was rating it based on my own house rules, and i should rate it based on the official rules, and i think the lack of setup variability hurts it :)

Hey rahdo, in regards to the "Beneficial Deeds" board, didnt you feel they should have made adjustments for a 2 player game? The amount of locations doesn't change in a 2, 3 or 4 player game, which I felt makes impossible for a citizen tile to be collected when playing with 2 players. I believe they should have made that a 2 sided board with a 2 player side with fewer locations. I know the latest 2017 expansion will replace the board but not sure that will address the player count issue. Thoughts? Thanks as usual!! Cheers
@rahdo
@rahdo 7 жыл бұрын
yes, the scaling for 2p overall is a weakness for orleans.
@dddmmm21
@dddmmm21 7 жыл бұрын
Any suggestions on how to fix that? I guess one could simply say "ignore last two worker places in each Beneficial Deeds location" when playing with 2. Thoughts?

I have the new version of this game on pre-order and probably still have another month to wait after an already long 2-3 month wait so far. The first thing I noticed at the beginning of your play through is that the starting number of tokens is only four. But you draw four at the beginning. That's not exciting. The first turn every player always gets the same four tokens. And as you said your wife always does the same first turn whenever she plays. Would it be better to start each player off with 6 or even 8 tokens in their bag/cup? Then your starting turn would have some variability and it would keep what you are drawing from your bag a little less predictable throughout the game. Maybe even let the players choose what 2 additional tokens to add from the starting token types. Thoughts?
@rahdo
@rahdo 8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Eisenhut i agree that this would be cool. but with the 2p variant we play, that puts different buildings out every time, we find enough variability based on what's availae there :)

Don't remove building tiles! Instead simply stack them like in Lords of Waterdeep in 3 or 4 stacks, with only the ones at the top available at any moment. That way you have a variable set up while using all the buildings but at any moment you only have access to a fraction of them.
@rahdo

@jasonbagley3712 9 жыл бұрын
TheMrE I think your idea is probably a little cleaner in some sense. Although, with Lords of Waterdeep you don't have stacks. You just draw from a common pile. I think that would be nice, and have probably 5 available at any time from level one, and 3 maybe from level 2. One advantage to having a common pile instead of premade stacks is that if one stack runs out, then every player has less options for the rest of the game. Whereas with a common stack, this only happens when the buildings are already running out--at which point all the remaining buildings are already available.
@samiamagainagain
@samiamagainagain 9 жыл бұрын
For 3-4 players, can't you just start with a limited number of buildings, then draw replacements for buildings that are taken? It seems that would randomize it a little. I would definitely want more buildings too though!
