I've definitely noticed my spv looking sad and slightly wilty if I don't water it every day. But then again, I'm in South Texas & it's triple digits straight through summer. It's really good about telling you if it needs attention ☺️

I cannot tell you how long I've been looking for these answers. I could never get a straight up answer it was always "well maybe if you.." I don't like sweet potatoes I really don't want to waste food because I like the plant that's on it. I'm glad to know I can get one and not waste food 😁☺️ ( Also I have a question, overwintering. How? 🤣 I read that you should just bring them inside and I'm okay with that BUT will it die like my inside hosta will? My hosta comes back in the spring I guess that's how they thrive is dying off and resting for winter. I'm just wondering if it's gonna die or look dead so I don't get sad and throw her away thinking I killed it and Its just resting)

I water mine every evening. Mine are in full sun. I fill with water until it runs out the bottom of the pot.

You can also take an actual sweet potato, root it like an avocado seed (suspended over water with toothpicks) wait for it to first root then grow shoots. Each potato will grow about 4-6 shoots. Wait for the shoots to get about a foot long, then gently take them off the potato and place them in water. Wait about two weeks and the shoots will have rooted on their own. You can then plant them as vines 👌

first time planting one...can you tell me how deep i need to put the roots? should it have rocks in the bottom of the pot ? also is all purpose dirt okay? Thank you for you time & consideration rfor Planting tips for dummies,like me

Welcome to sweet potato vines! If you are going from a pot to another pot I would upsize 2” in diameter. Personally I like to give about 2-4” of clearance on the bottom of the pot. I used to put rocks at the bottom of my pots but over time I’ve gotten away from it. It starts out helping with drainage but over time the soil starts to slip in between the rocks and clog up the drainage 😭 As for soil standard potting mix is perfect, but these guys arnt too picky and if you have something else it shouldn’t be a problem! Do these plants over winter indoors ok? I have a small spotted one that I know I'll need to bring inside once it gets too cold out in PA! I would guess that you shouldn't water them during winter unless they are completely dry ...is that correct?

I am in New Jersey and was wondering the same thing! Some of the plants leaves are turning color and dropping off so I brought him indoors but im not sure if this is part of the plants normal behavior. He was super happy outside all summer and now he almost looks like he is shedding for fall... this plant parent stuff is not easy.

Hey Kayla it will depend a bit on your climate, zones 9 and above can keep them year round but up in PA I know it gets pretty cold lol I would recommend pulling the tubers out of the ground and storing them in a garage for the best results(and your correct you wouldn't water them in this case) I hope that helps! (conversely you can always bring them indoors in a pot!

I noticed when I was watering my plants... there are pink flowers.. is that normal? I didn't know that they grow flowers

Hi. Just got one and it’s outdoors east morning sun. It doesn’t seem to be doing well. Some leaves start with spots and then it turns orange in colour. Then it dries up. Need your advice :) what could be happening ? Thanks

Hey Andy, It sounds like it may be drying out a little much, Im not sure if you've noticed if before it drying up if it droops but thats usually my tell that these want a drink! I hope it is doing a little better, it can always be a little hard to know exactly whats happening without seeing them, but I hope it helps a little!

i keep having issues with some of the leaves wilting and falling off. the plant is an indoor plant next to a window & grow light. theres still lots of new growth coming in so i’m not sure what the issue is

It’s always hard to say for sure but if it’s the bottom leaves dropping it could need a feeding since these guys grow so fast they go through more nutrients and energy!

Fertilizer is always a good boost to help them get to their full potential. Personally I like to user organic fertilizers since I’ve burned roots in the past with synthetic. My current favorite has been liquidirt but worm castings were previously my go to!
